Ducks Gameday—the BoC Consecu-Sweep

Minnesota Wild (15-12-1, t-8th in west) at Anaheim Ducks (16-11-3, t-3rd in west)
I'm dreaming of a Wild Crushmas.

Apologies for getting this post written so late, but I'm a damn lazy guy when I want to be.  At any rate, with all the recent BoC-sweep-inspired requests for State Rape sequels, I thought I'd take a quick look at how often teams went 0-3-0 on a three-team trip through California.  By my napkin-tally math, since the lockout 50 times a team has travelled to California to play the Ducks, Kings, and Sharks in some sort of consecutive fashion, and in seven of those instances, the visitor has come away with zero standings points, as documented below.

Season Visitor Dates Result 1 Result 2 Result 3 Outscored
2005-06 Columbus Oct 12-16 @SJS 1-4 @ANA 3-4 @LAK 1-3 @BoC 5-11
2006-07 Detroit Jan 4-7 @SJS 4-9 @LAK 2-4 @ANA 2-4 @BoC 8-17
2006-07 Edmonton Mar 9-12 @ANA 1-5 @SJS 0-3 @LAK 1-5 @BoC 2-13
2007-08 Nashville Oct 17-23 @ANA 1-3 @SJS 0-3 @LAK 0-6 @BoC 1-12
2007-08 Toronto Jan 9-12 @ANA 0-5 @LAK 2-5 @SJS 2-3 @BoC 4-13
2008-09 Columbus Dec 4-7 @SJS 2-3 @LAK 0-3 @ANA 3-5 @BoC 5-11
2008-09 St. Louis Dec 10-13 @ANA 2-4 @LAK 2-6 @SJS 4-5 @BoC 8-15

In another seven instances, by the way, a visiting team has also come away with zero wins, but did at least get loser points in overtime.  Anyways, looking at the table, I suppose the requesting readers are right -- the BoC Consecu-Sweep is a rare enough occasion that when it happens twice in two weeks, it's time to get map-happy.

Click forward if you dare see the carto/porno-graphical blasphemy of a gloating Californian.

Hope you enjoyed your visit to sunny California.
Thanks for the six points.

Prediction: The Wild lost last night in L.A., but this is only a two-stop California trip. It doesn't matter, though; I think Minnesota is still sore from the inaugural State Rape cartoon. Ducks 4, Wild 1. Just like each of the 2003 and 2007 postseasons, the Wild only get one puck past J.S. Giguere.  Goals by Marchant, Kunitz, Pahlsson, and Hedican.  For some Wild perspective, go visit Hockey Wilderness, part of the SBN megaverse.

Go Ducks.

The “This really gives me the Blue Jackets” made me laugh way too hard. I hate to think how many times the Kings have blown the state sweep in those 50 instances.

The West Coast is the Best Coast.

I didn’t get that detailed, but I did notice that the 14 times that the BoC teams all got wins (regulation or OT/SO), the Sharks or the Ducks always had the first win. The Kings have done well on “sloppy seconds”, if you will, but there hasn’t been a BoC Consecu-Sweep when L.A. is the first stop — at least since the lockout.

Granted, I’m guessing nearly all the through-CA road trips start in San Jose or Anaheim (north-to-south or south-to-north, L.A. is the middle team), and it’s not clear that it’s even L.A. that blows it in those situations, but it did catch my eye.

Thinking about it another way,

the Kings may have done their job up front and the Sharks or Ducks may have blown it. I’m just saying…

Oh and thanks for the christening BoC SBN with the graphic graphic!

Go Kings!

“Missouri Compromised”

(starts slow clap)

What’s interesting to me is the title “Enter At Your Own Risk.” Are you implying that the penetration may be detrimental to the state’s health? Nothing like a good ol STD. Hell, that could stand for Scoring Total Deficit or something.

Yeah, that was my favorite part, too. St. Louis nearly made the list twice this year, but managed a shootout loss in San Jose in their November CA swing. Still, they’ve taken two BoC Road Trips in the last six weeks and are 0-5-1 in those games. Stop by again next season, Blues!

Are you implying that the penetration may be detrimental to the state’s health?

It’s just a general warning. Sometimes California can be a cruel host.

Yeah, tell me about it!!!

I’m old enough to remember when the Blues were on the giving end of that sweep, WAAAYYY back before some of you whippersnappers were born, we were coming to the Golden State to sweep the Seals in Oakland and the gold-and-purple clad Kings in the Fabulous Forum…those days are clearly gone.

Salut to my new friends at BoC…you have been a cruel host, but lots of fun to interact with.

We can’t beat anybody these days outside of the Central…at least we beat the Preds 3 times and the Hawks twice!

Oh, and in case anybody cares

Here’s the 50 instances teams have made the BoC Road Trip since the lockout. I’m not counting times that Dallas played weird scheduling quirks like ANA-LAK-LAK or if a team made a quick stop in PHX. All three BoC teams had to be involved in consecutive games.

BoC Road Trips since the Lockout
Detroit – 6 times
Columbus, Dallas, Nashville – 5 times
St. Louis – 4 times
Chicago, Minnesota – 3 times
Calgary, Vancouver – 2 times
Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, Colorado, Edmonton, New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Washington – 1 time

Son, you've been Bear Flagged

God, the iterations of that graphic always make me laugh. This time Cali keeps it interesting by changing positions slightly.

I particularly like how the Censored bar begins just south of Pt. Conception….

Anyway, don’t overplay your hand here. State Rape in moderation, I always say. What?

naw no moderation

like u said earl it doenst happen very often….continue the great cartoons…makes the 10 hours a day i work that much easier to tolerate..

lets hope we get to re-use the new york one again..

p.s.
i missed the wild game…did i miss much? who looked good? who looked bad?

i read that parros made a good pass to set up ryan…must mean the 4th line still humming along doing good? also morrsion scored? do i smell a battle to find out who the real “2nd line” is? what do you think?

The top line was pretty awesome, especially right at the start — Corey Perry’s goal was pretty sick, and Getzlaf could have scored a couple of times.

Nobody really looked bad: with B-Mo starting to wake up and B-Ry playing well on the 4th line, I’m really liking the balanced attack. Well, I guess whoever on Minnesota passed straight to George Paroos looked pretty bad.

Hadn’t thought about it yet. Depends on how I feel after the Kings-Sharks tonight. I’m feeling kind of lazy, though, so I may just steal something from the web.

by Earl Sleek on Dec 15, 2008 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

Okay I missed the game too, (apparently it wasn’t on anyway?), but I did have a look at the Live Blog on the Ducks official site. Something Adam Brady said had me confused.

It’s trivia time and contestant Tim is asked, When is the last time a Ducks player was voted into the All-Star Game? Selanne in ‘07, Niedermayer in ’06 or Kariya in ’01? He guesses Niedermayer and he’s … wrong! It’s Kariya in 2001.

Didn’t 5 Ducks players go the All-Star game last year? Forgive me if this seems stupid, but I didn’t think ALL of them were replacements…

?

by brokenyard on Dec 15, 2008 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think the key item was “voted in”, as that only applies to the six starters (if they bother to show up) for each conference. After the fans vote in the starting six, then the NHL picks the rest of the rosters. That’s how the Ducks have been going to the ASG lately, as NHL picks or as replacements, and that’s unlikely to change anytime too soon.

I don’t mind terribly, though. There’s few things more insignificant to me than the annual All-Star Game; given the choice, I’d rather that all the Ducks got a weekend off instead of going.

I love it!!!!

Is it wrong for me to be slightly happy over knowing a team didn’t enjoy their trip out west?? :)

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

by ang6666 on Dec 14, 2008 3:27 PM PST reply actions

Damn, California sure looks like it knows what it’s doing. I guess that’s what experience gives you…

Also, bravo for “Missouri Compromised”

Ducks make a Trade

Apparently Brian Sutherby is now a Dallas Star, and commenter Dwain can’t shut up about it. In return the Ducks get some dude named David McIntyre and a conditional sixth-round pick in 2010.

And thus, the Bob Murray era begins.

Quick flip through the schedules reveals these upcoming chances for more……interstate trade violations? proof that we’re the best?

^Lightning || DKS || 1/9, 1/12, 1/13

No way in hell the Kings are playing in May.

Looking at the Kings’ schedule, their only remaining home game against the Predators is March 16 (March/May, easy mistake).

Although this would be the perfect chance for the Kings to win the first game and have the other teams blow it. Not that the Kings have been good against the Predators this year, but March is a long way off. And who knows? Perhaps those two weeks could have playoff implications for all four teams.

by Kevin Y on Dec 14, 2008 9:45 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, those are all supposed to be in March.

by senor_k on Dec 14, 2008 10:26 PM PST up reply actions

Looking at the table… first of all, how the hell did Detroit go 0-3-0 on a trip involving the Kings? I do remember that I was in San Francisco on Winter Break at the time… I was listening to the Kings/Red Wings game on NHL Radio, and if memory serves, Avery scored for the Kings in that game. I was out of the loop for that week, so I never knew about the fact that they gave up NINE goals to the Sharks.

Also, the Kings have somehow been pretty great in these situations. They had the best victory against the Blues, the best victory against the Blue Jackets (part II), and the best victory against the Predators. So they are doing their fair share in all of this.

Third, anybody else notice how similar Ohio looks to Missouri when turned on its side?

Finally, you have the old Blue Jackets logo up on the graphic, Sleek. They have the flag and star thingy now. That just says Blue Jackets… as for the old logo, it literally says “Blue Jackets”.

Oh, I suppose we can play those by ear. There’s no real hard rules to what triggers a state rape — mostly just Sleek’s mood.

I will note, though, that there already has been a State Rape commissioned for both Ontario and New York already, so you can take a look at what triggered those.
