Ducks Gameday—2008: A Year in Doctored Pictures
Philadelphia Flyers (20-10-7, 5th in east) at Anaheim Ducks (19-15-4, 6th in west)
2009: According to my calendar, it is Year of the Duck.
Rather than write up anything meaningful today, I thought I'd take a look back over some of the posts I wrote / pictures I drew over the past calendar year. Think of it as a bit of a retrospective on some of the 2008 blog-silliness of Earl Sleek. For any of the images, feel free to click back and read what events inspired such blessed idiocy. I've included one picture per month, plus three bonus pictures from a pretty image-happy summer.
Click below to see fifteen of my yesteryear favorites.
January 2008: Finnish Flashback
February 2008: A day that will live in infamy...
March 2008: What to do about Stompy?
April 2008: Ducks Gameday—Stage Six: Survival
May 2008: A moment of silence, please
June 2008: Is the writing on the wall for Schneider-man?
July 2008: Burke vs. Lowe, now in desktop wallpaper format!
July 2008: Sleek gets ImMirtle-ized. Go Pigs!
July 2008: Sleek forgets to include heroism in Bettman art
August 2008: More Bad Puns: the Pensblog submissions
August 2008: Bad Puns III: The Sanford Mask Contest
September 2008: Explaining the finer points of hockey to a new generation of fans
October 2008: BoC Gameday—What Scares Me About Your Team
November 2008: Brian Burke Week Part 1: Sleek defends three "bad" moves
December 2008:SUPER BIG NEWS (Let's call it SBN for short)
So that's my list. Feel free to comment on whichever one was your personal favorite, even if it's an image that I neglected to include.
Prediction: Ducks 3, Flyers 2. Goals by Perry, Pahlsson, and Kunitz.
Go Ducks.

Those are awesome. Love all of them.
Golfing in May is also my favorite. The poor Sharks.
Although if memory serves, the Sharks did make the Western Conference Finals in 2004, but lost to the Flames.
Fuck you, Denis Gauthier

Heh, yeah, that’s true. Still, since this blog began the 2nd round exit trend has been quite consistent. In a selfish way, if it pre-dates this blog, it never happened! :)

So then that one clip from the Mighty Ducks/Flames brawl back in 2003… that never happened, either? Damn, I wish it had…

The nice thing about selective memories is that you can select which things happened or not.
That Ducks/Flames brawl (which I’m pretty sure pre-dates 2003) definitely happened, as did the Mighty Ducks’ cup run from 2003, but try as I might, I just can’t seem to recall any 2nd-round success from the San Jose Sharks. Kind of curious how that happens.

I think California sodomizing Illinois to be far more amusing.
Maybe I’m just biased being in New York though.
You’re probably right. Only problem was that the NY state rape happened in a pretty slow month (graphics-wise), while the Chicago state rape happened in a busier month with more options. I just picked one of them as representative of the whole set, but certainly everyone’s entitled to their favorite. And yeah, probably best to enjoy one that’s not picking on your home state. :)

Your cartoons and cut-and-paste is pure quality.
Earl or Rudy, where do I find your article about the Ducks using penalties to control the game and overwhelm the officials?
I believe that was employed by Quinn in the WJC game the other night and I want to get a link to the article.
Cheers.

The post you are looking for (I believe) is here.
Actually, that one wasn’t a bad 2008 Sleek graphic either.

God, that was fucking awesome!!

WTF
Brian Hayward is Sports Illustrated’s NHL Color Analyst of the year for 2008? Are you shitting me?
Never go to SI for anything remotely about hockey, I guess.

Incredible
It must be an early April Fool’s joke.
One of the best things about watching Ducks games online is that you get opponents’ feeds about half the time. This Flyers game, for example, comes with the added bonus of blacking out of all the commercials.
I don’t know who’s more of an embarassment to the Ducks: Hayward, or that Al Balderas guy from the OC Register that wanted to abolish the Blue Jackets.
I also don’t know what’s more embarassing: Hayward to the Ducks, or the fact that SI has an award for the best NHL Color Analyst of the Year.
Fuck you, Denis Gauthier
I’m not sure if this has been covered elsewhere, but the NHL seems to think there’s a resemblance, too. Four game suspension?!? OUCH. Looks like he’ll miss the Coyotes game, the two Kings games, and the one against the Lightning. The Ducks are currently tied with the ’Yotes in the standings, and Kings games are always tough, regardless of the standings. The Tampa Bay game…eh.
Excellent stuff Sleekster. My favorite would definitely have to be “A Moment of Silence”. Nothing like a laugh to get you threw the hard times.
If we’re running through memory lane, I remember you talking about Battlestar Galactica as consuming you for a period of time. I just picked up this game Mass Effect for 360, and it’s right up your alley. If you have 30 bucks to spare (it’s about a year old, got marked down) definitely pick it up. Epic storyline, excellent character expansion, and it’s due to be a trilogy (with 2 coming out in 09 and 3 slated for late this year or early 2010).
The best part about it is the decisions you make in the game (which are a lot of them) affect the universe in 2. It takes your saved game file and uploads all of the information. So if you kill a creature or have bad relations with a species, that will be translated to your entire trek.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Besides being a giant homer (like EVERY color analyst is, don’t lie, you know it’s true, that’s their JOB – I don’t know why everyone acts like Hayward is the only one that does it), Hayward is actually a pretty good color analyst. The job of the color guy is to provide insights into the game, and the players, and on ice strategy etc. If you’ve watched/listened to feeds of other teams, some of the color guys around the league are HORRIBLE.
They provide no insight, no analysis of the on ice plays, no prior experience to draw on. Hell, take NBC, Edzo what’s his face and that stupid bald guy they have in between the benches are absolute crap as color guys.
In fact, I think SoCal has 2 of the better color guys around. Jim Fox is just as big of a homer, but like Hazy, he has lots of good tidbits of info on the players and the coaches, and despite his annoying way of ending his sentences, he’s pretty good.
Don't bRuin your life. Make love with a Trojan
Thank you
People say he questions every call against the Ducks. He questions them, but certainly not all of them. And in doing so he helps teach me the rules of the game. He’s always saying “As soon as you do this, they’re going to call you on it every time” or “I don’t like this call because the rule is this, and you can see in the replay that although that occurred, this clearly didn’t happen.”
You know who doesn’t like Brian Hayward? Sean Avery. Sean Avery’s a huge douchebag. You’re not all huge douchbags, are you?

That’s about the most compelling vote for Hayward I’ve ever seen :)
He might be defendable in some sense, but shouldn’t one requirement of a good color man be that I hope he calls another game in the future? I have no such wish for Hayward.
