Retire?? WTF??
WTF Jiggy?? You'd rather retire than be a back up. Nice team attitude. Good job building trade value for yourself.

Now, I'm a big fan of Giguere, but this makes me think twice about him. I'm practically thinking "good riddance" now (at least that's what I'd think if he gets traded).

Thanks for pulling that together, but shrug, I’m not going to overblow a one-sentence quote.
That’s Canada’s job. Or the NHL’s job. Whatever — I would have thought by now with Niedermayer and Selanne that Anaheim fans would flinch less at the mere mention of retirement.

It’s more the reason for retiring that’s bogus. It’s childish and along the lines of guys like Ryan Leaf.
It’s as if he feels entitled. I always thought Jiggy was a better person than that.

Sure, but at least let the guy make his statement — I don’t really trust the validity of one textbyte without much context even if it is repeated a hundred times on Twitter.
If he does in fact retire because he is in fact unable to be a backup, then we’ll have plenty of time to discuss it later — I heavily doubt that ever happens, though.

Yeah it sounds a bit like it could be out of context – he’s certainly not knocking Hiller, I think the guy just wants to play. Though if I was being paid $6.5 mil just to show up to practice I wouldn’t have too many complaints.
Lol, just kidding. This post was a complete lie.

Ok, so it does appear to be a bit out of context.
Giguere has clarified that he does not plan on retiring any time soon and meant to say that he wasn’t having any fun sitting on the bench and that he wasn’t there to just collect his paycheck. Maybe his sarcasm was lost in translation – maybe it’s some weird French Canadian thing – I wouldn’t know as a SoCal native.

Yeah, figured as much — I dunno, players hardly say anything of value anymore, so maybe I’m just numb to it, but I think a statement of that magnitude I might need to hear from more than one source.

Agreed. But he wasn’t misquoted. It was just a stupid comment from Giguere. Doesn’t the NHLPA provide media training for its players? That’s why your so numb to all the comments – cause they’re all a bunch of cliches.

I didn’t think he was misquoted, really (I don’t suspect anybody made up the quote but Giguere), but it’s certainly a context issue. Some guy put a very thin quote in mass distribution, and it took off from there.
Another source would have been useful to put some more context behind the question and answer, or could have bothered with a useful follow-up question like “Really?”
But anyway, I suspect if Giguere ever has anything meaningful to say about his playing demands, we’d probably hear it from (a) Giguere’s agent, or (b) GM Murray before we’d hear it from Giguere himself. If a player says something into a microphone himself, odds are I’ll never care.
