Jonathan Quick is Not Very Good Right Now
Jonathan Quick cost us the game last night. Well, not really, no one person ever costs a team a game, but he should have stopped at least one of the three goals that went in. Last night was really frustrating because none of the goals were necessarily bad goals to let in, but all were stoppable with solid positioning.
The first goal, he came out to face the shot but lost the puck off the rebound; while he searched for it (and even stepped away from the puck), Mika Pyorala made a quick move to his right and buried the puck. But hey, that happens to everyone. Still, it's not a good idea to start to stand up and move to your right when you don't know where the puck is.
The second goal was a team lapse and Mike Richards did take a hard shot, but Quick still could have gotten it. It's one of those goals where you'd like to see him make the save but you understand why he didn't. Still, a more positionally sound goaltender would have saved it. He dived to the left on the initial cross-ice pass instead of sliding over, then dove back to the right as the puck went behind the net; by the time the puck was passed up to Richards, Quick was so out of control that any shot where he wasn't was pretty much guaranteed to go in. His stick was out of position, he wasn't focused on the puck, he was kind of a mess.
The third goal he was kind of lazy getting back, although you can kind of understand why he didn't get there because who expects the puck to bounce off the endboards like that? And you can point to Sean O'Donnell for not tying up James Van Riemsdyk, but I still think Quick needs to be heading over there as the shot goes by, not waiting until he sees Van Riemsdyk's eyes get big to realize he's in trouble.
And see, that's the problem with Quick right now. The goals he's letting in aren't necessarily bad goals, but they're saves you've seen other goalies make. Goalies who make all the saves they should make are and don't get the ones they're not supposed to are called back-ups in the NHL. He needs to be up more on the balls of his feet, stop diving from side to side, be more controlled and be bigger in the net. (STOP HUNCHING OVER, WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THAT???) Right now he looks like a roller hockey goaltender, flopping from one post to the other, and I don't know why.
Quick has a .900 SV% so far this season; that's just not good enough. It's easy to say, "Well, it wasn't really his fault because of this, this, and this," but at some point you have to stop making excuses and start believing the numbers. I like Quick and I think he's a good goalie, but if we're going to criticize Jason Labarbera and Mathieu Garon and Dan Cloutier and Erik Ersberg and Cristobal Huet and every goalie the Kings have ever had since Rogie Vachon, it's only fair that we criticize Quick. He needs to pick it up.

My dream scenario for a future championship club include an elite center, winger, d-man and goalie. Kopitar and Doughty appear to fit 2 of these slots and I pray to Jeebus and Santa and whoever else that Bernier develops into an elite goalie… I hate having to be patient.
I also hope for a team with tons of grit… hurry up Schenn and Clifford. And I hope Lombardi didn’t make a mistake in drafting Colton Teubert over Tyler Myers. I really hope he isn’t a clown.
Myers wasn’t available when we took Tuebert. He went 12th to Buffalo, we took Tuebert with the 13th pick. Agreed he doesn’t look as hot as we when we took him, but Voinov and Loktionov look better than advertised so hopefully it evens out.

The Kings dropped from 12th to 13th in order to snag Buffalo’s 2009 3rd round pick.
Lombardi traded Cammaleri and a late first round pick (which Lombardi got from Dallas in the Matty Norstrom trade) in a three way trade with the Ducks and Flames and the Kings got the 12th overall selection. Lombardi then played cards with Darcy Regeir and flipped the 12th and 13th overall selections while also netting a 3rd rounder from Buffalo (which turned into Andrew Campbell). Kings could’ve drafted Myers.
Pretty damn weak that Quick got outplayed by Brian pinchi Boucher last night
Stanley Cups won: Raymond Bourque 1 - Marty McSorley 2. Suck it, Chowderhead!

I don't think hating on Quick's entirely fair...
I’m a Phoenix Coyotes season ticket holder so I should hate L.A. and the other teams in California. Yet, I drafted Jon Quick to be on my fantasy team (it’s a very deep league and I wanted to grab another starter before they were gone.) That said, I liken his development to be similar to Cam Ward’s. Ward’s had some great campaigns in recent seasons, but after his first full season in the NHL (you know, the one after he started in the playoffs when Gerber dominated the whole regular season as the starter…) to have a .897 save percentage, which is pretty close to what Quick has now.
What’s my point? It’s his first full season in the NHL and frankly, there’s a lot of legitimate reasons why Quick’s not entirely to blame. From a team perspective, L.A.‘s defense has holes in it and he’s having to patch that up as an inexperienced goaltender on an semi-experienced run-and-gun team (Ryan Smyth’s cool, but I know the Kings are missing Kyle Quincey right now.) From an individual perspective, this is his first full year in the NHL and he’s already leading the league in starts; largely because Erik Ersberg isn’t finding his rhythm and therefore isn’t finding the ice time (or vice versa.) I know it’s only one end of the ice but it’s still draining; he’s lucky to not be out with an injury at this point.
At the end of the day, the problem isn’t with Quick; it’s with the Kings organization for either not playing Ersberg more, not promoting Jonathan Bernier, or for not making a move (trade or otherwise) for an experienced backup to support Quick. I remember when the Detroit Red Wings had Tim Cheveldae as their goaltender back when the team was more focused on offense than it was on defense. They didn’t have an experienced backup for him to work with and it ultimately wrecked his development to the point where he was retired by the ripe old age of 30. Compare that to when they made a play for Mike Vernon to support Chris Osgood during his second NHL season and look how Osgood’s career turned out (3 Stanley Cup rings and 5 Cup Finals appearances don’t lie folks.) If Ersberg can’t be responsible for 30-35 games then a play has to be made for someone else to either share starts with Quick or guide him to becoming a solid starting goaltender.
I’m not hating on Quick, I’m pointing out that he’s not playing well. I don’t think stating the obvious is unfair. And the Kings defense doesn’t have holes; they’re 2nd in the league in shots allowed per game. I do agree that the Kings need someone better to back up Quick, but they’re going to wait until at least December to call up Bernier. I don’t think Quick is tired, and I don’t think he’s wishing he was playing less. The simple fact is Quick isn’t playing well and he needs to play better.
