Ducks Gameday -- A Christmas Cartoon

Phoenix Coyotes (14-11-1, 8th in west) at Anaheim Ducks (10-11-3, t-14th in west), 5 pm
Extra credit reading assignments: Anaheim Calling on the Ducks and Five For Howling on the Coyotes.

Well, on the one hand, despite some recent winning, the Ducks are still tied for last place in the western conference. On the other hand, they do sit only six standings points out of the eighth seed with a chance to close the gap tonight -- seems kind of hopeful. But yeah, screw it -- the Ducks have played better since I declared the season dead; I shouldn't try to mess that up with any optimism today.

We did have a great time at Friday's day game, though. It's the second straight year I've attended the Black(hawks) Friday game with my kid brother, and the second straight year the Ducks have won via shutout. I'll have to make that my top priority game next year, I think. Corey Perry did tie Selanne's franchise record 17-game scoring streak (on a Teemu goal, no less), and of course he has a chance to take the record outright -- and yup, the game isn't televised at all tonight. Good luck, Radio Perry (or if anyone has a link to make him into Internet-Video-Stream Perry, feel free to leave it in the comments).

In the meantime, I've been alerted that the NHL Arena boards are holding some sort of Ducks Blog-Off (Round 1), which pits Duck fansites against each other in a poll. I don't know, though -- Rudy's not on the Kings list; Chen's not on the Sharks list. So I'll say "whatever" -- go vote for Anaheim Calling. I will, however, be using these poll lists to update our dated Pacific Division blogroll. One of these days, I'm sure.

Also, my first submission for Chamber of Comics' cartoon marathon is posted -- it's pretty random and generally reflects my hunger at the time I was sketching. I was inspired by Mike W's (and pals') attempts at a 30-cartoons-in-30-days challenge -- I'm not truly participating, but I did mess around with a few things style-wise: drawing with ball-point pen instead of a Sharpie and working a bit more with multi-panel formats. I must say, multi-panel in particular has been a bit of a struggle -- I'm still not sure whether it's best to start writing from the first panel or from the last. Also, I have a tendency to put too much storyline in, as I did with my second submission (after the jump). It's a cute idea and even has a holiday theme, but my first draft had twice as many panels and 300% more explanation -- now I've slimmed it down to its basic essentials.

I call it "The Santa Claws(e)" -- enjoy!

Coyotes, werewolves, what's the difference?

Prediction: Shockingly, Kyle Calder's presence is missed. In all seriousness, he had a damn good game on Friday -- we were only partially joking about how hard Rudy would fight for Kyle's signed stick if he was third star of the game.

Yeah, and it’s not even just Perry’s chance of breaking a Ducks franchise record tonight — Teemu Selanne is now just one point behind former teammate Phil Housley on the NHL career scoring list. Plus with only one other game happening in the NHL today, it seems a game that they’d almost have to cover.

Yeah, the bleeding egg (with the stabby holes) was my favorite part, too. But I agree with MIke W, that was completely deranged! Haha, maybe it’s just because I’m so used to your hockey-based cartoons — usually, there’s some familiar frame of reference.

Plus I generally seem to do well with single-panel cartoons, often with a bunch of setup text. Standalone cartoons are somewhat a different breed, one I can definitely get a bit silly in.

Very true — the downsides is usually it’s multiple times the effort, and I’m lazy by nature — by the end of a comic strip, I get a little sick of working at finishing it and just want it finished. Maybe that’s why comic book artists use inkers.

I’ll have to improve it on the next one — this still is all sort of technique-building.

And in case anybody’s really vague on the story of the Santa-Wolf cartoon, as it really isn’t well explained, here’s what I sent an e-mail inquirer:

Haha, yeah, it’s vague.

Nah, it’s really not even coyote-related, just something I was messing around with on the side. The guy gets bitten by a werewolf, and starts becoming a wolf soon after (a la Jack Nicholson in “Wolf”), and at the same time he kills Santa Claus and starts becoming St. Nick (a la Tim Allen in “The Santa Clause”). The mix makes him turn into a Santa-Werewolf at night, where he eats his reindeer. Or something like that.

Don’t feel bad — I couldn’t explain it very well within the confines of a comic strip, still working on that.

It’s tough to blame Burkie too much there — Giguere did post a SCF shutout right before the new contract, and the NMC was related to Jiggy’s sick kid.

No fights, but a fairly heated game between what is probably our least-hated division rival. Disappointing ending, Giguere looked fine though. Didn’t really make any great saves but didn’t let anything easy in.

What was all of this bickering/pushing/fighting involving Teemu? Earlier comments alluded to him getting a roughing penalty. I wonder who was messing with him.

I hope it makes him angry and he continues his scoring tear. God I love Teemu, I hope he plays for Finland in the olympics.

I don’t know who it was, but I saw the Phoenix guy go in for a hard check on Teemu, and Teemu must have thought it was late or something. I didn’t see him do anything, maybe he shoved the guy with one hand or something but my eyes kept following the puck around the boards and then suddenly whistles blew, play stopped, and in the corner Teemu and the Coyote-feller’s faces were kissing distance apart and then the refs took Teemu to the box for roughing.

And the only amazing save belonged to Wiz. The puck deflected upward of Giguere and behind him, and Wisniewski dove at it and swatted it away in mid air to save a goal.

I want to send this to all ducks players and coaches....the monkey pretty much says it all...
