Kings-Sharks Recap: Booyah!

First thought: woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Drew Doughty is awesome.  His assist to get Kopitar off the schneid was a beautiful play.  He patiently held onto the puck until the Sharks overcommitted then slid the puck between two defenders to a wide open Kopitar.  His goal was just straight heat.  I always thought it was kind of bullshit when he talked about how he felt more comfortable because he changed his stick blade, but maybe that actually worked.

-Ted Purcell, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown all broke 10+ game droughts.  Good thing the Sharks had a shitty goalie in, otherwise they still might be waiting for their goal.

-You know who's good?  Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

-You know who's not?  Erik Ersberg.

-Michal Handzus had a pretty bad game, picking up 3 particularly brutal penalties.  The Kings managed to win the special teams battle, however, and staved off the powerful San Jose power play.  The Kings penalty kill still kind of sucks by the percentages, but it should be better and hopefully this game is a sign that it's going to start improving.

-The Kings have another tough game tomorrow night against the Coyotes, although Ed Jovanovski is suspended for tomorrow's game because the NHL head office still doesn't understand Pronger physics.  Quick will be in for that game, so it should be a good one.

-The Kings are 3 points out of 1st in the Pacific.  Just saying.

Final thought: wooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty impressive couple of wins over the Sharks and Calgary. I think our PK has been better because Stoll and Handzus remembered how to win faceoffs. Stoll in particular has been impossible to beat.

What can be said about Drew Doughty? Beautiful pass, beautiful goal and great defense.

Stoll has really stepped up his game this year. His scoring is up, he’s strong on faceoffs and he has been taking the body a lot more. Maybe Rachel Hunter was holding him back.

Both goalies sucked tonight. Honestly, I don’t understand how Nabokov gets all the credit he does. I would take Quick over Nabokov any day and for $5 mil. less.

Great win. The Kings are for real.

by RealDrew on Dec 9, 2009 10:42 PM PST reply actions

That had to be the 2nd worst game for Nabokov all season… Maybe 3rd, I forgot about the other Kings game. You know what, fuck starting Nabby against the Kings, our backup shut them out last year, put Greiss in there.

Typical night at the Tank

Sharks fan:

“Who’s Dean Lombardi?”

“Who’s Doug Wilson?”

“LA sucks!”

Then, “Nabakov sucks”

“fuck, why can’t we get a good goalie?”

By the way, it was completely obvious to me that Brown was going to score that goal. But I thought he would do it in regulation. He just looked determined to end the drought.

All I can say is Doughty looks like a pimp. Just very polished and smart for his age.

not sure what was more amazing the turnaround goal by brown or nabby letting it go 5-hole…i laughed my ass off and texted sleek…maybe rudy was right…after i texted “rudy was right…” i punished my fingers by slamming a big book on them…(im typing with one hand right now)

it looked like eastern conference hockey with multiple goals scored and bad defense…my prayers of the roof caving in and crushing both teams dead was not realized

I think the Kings saw my comment about Nabby letting in bad five-hole goals. Hey, for anyone who thinks Drew Remenda is a homer, he was all over Nabby for those five-hole goals.

Yesterday ang established that Sharks fans prefer silliness over taste. Well I think the “Beat LA” chant eliminated any argument for creativity.

by GordonBombay on Dec 10, 2009 6:25 AM PST via mobile reply actions

i think though as a kings fan u would have been happy to hear that…u guys have been bottom feeding so long..to have another team do that tired chant..meant u guys are legitimate this year

thought u kings fans might have popped a boner …sliced open a pillow…and went to town over that

I was thinking the same thing Spade. It annoyed me at first but then I realized the fans weren’t taking a win for granted anymore. I like this year.

Ah! Seriously. The first thing that popped into my mind was, “Well, Duck victories have been so rare, he probably hasn’t had to make an emergency run to Sheets-N-Things this season or anything” — and I didn’t even think that was strange. This place is warping me.

Nahhh, I was already warped. Mockery is fun, though.

Ersberg

When the Kings trailed 2-1, and again when the Sharks tied it up, all I thought was ‘tonight (Phoenix) is now a must win, because Murray gambled and cost the Kings two points by going with Ersberg’. The offense bailed both Ersberg and Murray out.

On the other hand, it’s a tough situation for both of them. Murray has to play Quick as much as possible, but it’s gotta be tough to play only your third game of the season, and to do it against the top scoring team in the West. He looked good at time, but at least two of those goals were pretty soft.

Seriously, I was thinking to myself, “Oh great, so this is what we can expect from a seven-year playoff drought followed by some early-season success?” Rudy’s earned it, though.

Every goalie has a night like this periodically.

By the way, this is only the second loss this season that I can blame on Nabokov.

You can’t say that about too many goalies in the league.

by Ivano M on Dec 10, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

Did you watch the game?

There were soft goals on both sides. You can’t just lay this one on Nabakov. There were planty of quality chances that revealed more about the Sharks than just a soft goalie.

1. The Sharks are slow compared to the Kings.

2. The Sharks are not especially deep either way, and Rob Blake looks like shit!

I know, but I thought it was funny timing, us suggesting you jinxed him and all.

Overall you don’t have too much to worry about, it’s not like he is letting in 70 foot wrist shots like some anaheim goalies have been doing.

Not the way I wanted it but ill take it !!!!!

oh yeah !!!! that game was a great one so great dont remember shit after Kings postgame except that I dragged my whiskey soaked carcass to the shower passed out in there for a few min as i lied there semi concious i utterd that ol’ beautiful song "’ I LOVE LA " thinking after tonite I will be seeing at least 1 trophy held up this year why cant it be 2 - Lakers are just killing teams especially the so called tough games and Kings are not letting Teams like the Penguins and Sharks just roll over them instead we jamming our crown up there ass and they are asking for seconds ….Now onto tonite with Too Quick in net this should be a close one since last night game was so obviously grueling i still say KING 3-1 !!!!!!! P.S. Hey Bro, I love how you are watching real hockey now every text last night you were following along felt like you were right there next to me i even started wrestling my wife until she kicked me in the nads she got sent to the showers for that !!!!!!! The Kings managed to win the special teams battle, however, and staved off the powerful San Jose power play.

You clearly didn’t get the memo about the fact that San Jose has 30th PP at home in the league.
