Anaheim Ducks 2009-10 Salary Commitments

One thing that drives me a little crazy about the Pronger trade rumors is the notion that the Ducks somehow need to move Captain Elbows because he doesn't fit into their salary structure somehow. Nonsense. Pronger may move, but it had better be because of an opportunity to fill out the roster above, which still very much has a "clean slate" feel to it. This summer will be very interesting, to say the least -- and that's coming from a guy whose last few summers have involved semi-retirements and salary cap ceilings. Hang on to your hats and glasses.
Prediction: Huge game today between the Ducks and Stars, plus later will be the Oilers hosting the Wild. All four teams enter today with 65 points, so it's essentially Bubble Saturday -- a regulation decision becomes huge. Ducks 4, Stars 2. Goals by Perry, Getzlaf, Pahlsson (disguised as Moen), and Brookbank.
Go Ducks.

Great day for a 12 0 clock game
Just cracked my first beer, chicken marinating, burgers and dogs ready to go.
This is gonna be a great game.
GO DUCKS!

So lazy that I set my alarm but I wake up after the 1st period is over anyway. I don’t know what the fuck happened to my alarm, it looks like it was never set. Bullshit.

Whoever you trade, it should be for depth. The Ducks have the top-end talent (Getzlaf, Ryan, Selanne, Pronger, Nieds, Hiller/Giguere), it’s the fact that they can’t win the bottom-line battles that’s killing them.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
Yeah, but another scoring line wouldn’t kill ‘em — I don’t mind if there’s an attempt at a “name”, I suppose. But your right — a lot that has to get done this summer is figure out what sort of 3rd and 4th lines this team will roll next year.
Re-signing Pahlsson would go a long way, I think.

Just got an update on Pronger deal and it appears Pronger to the Bruins is very real and salary cap issues are the only thing holing it up right now. One interesting twist is that Phil Kessel is currently not the main Bruin going back to Anaheim. I am being told that defenseman Mark Stuart, Prospect Joe Colborne and a first round pick in 2010 would go to Anaheim in exchange for Pronger and forward Travis Moen. Both teams have apparently agreed in principle on a trade.
Link. Discuss.

On our SBN e-mail, Stanley Cup of Chowder explained it a bit better.
The way Murph wrote that it is confusing. There is another roster player for the B’s involved. It would be Player X, Stuart, Colborne, and a pick for Pronger and Moen.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
depends on who player x is, obviously.
I am in favor of keeping pronger.
Dont trade unless we get something huge.

Yeah, we’ll see — from the Boston angle, the thing they’re excited about is that Phil Kessel is not involved. I am not excited about that, but we’ll see. This part at least gave me some hope:
There are other teams (I’m told New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington), still pushing hard, but Pronger to Beantown is very real!
Bidding could make this work out. Positivity?
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Yeah. I’m not sure Pronger for pieces is a good move. If Kessel were involved, that might make it interesting.
Plus new daddy Moen? I’m a bit torn there (though I suppose he’s on the road no matter what team he plays for).
http://www.battleofcali.com/
I'll tell you what
Having a half-million dollar signed Brookbank on that defensemen listing makes me feel a lot better about that overall coming-together roster next year.

So what should we make of the Whitney – Pronger pairing? If rumors are true, it’s going to be a short-lived partnership. Before Sleek’s link to Bruins’ blog, I was a very teeny bit hopeful that the Ducks wouldn’t bother pairing Whitney with Pronger unless they were leaning towards keeping him.
in short, I’m still hoping it’s all a bunch of bull shit rumors.

And here’s the thing to keep in mind — even if it’s not 100% the right decision to trade away Pronger, it is a good time to be a deadline seller. There’s more demand than supply, and with desperation in the mix, it could work out fine.
Unless Lauren Pronger hates it, of course.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Yeah, that is a definitely a silver lining. The Ducks should be dealing from a position of strength. Makes me realize how much it sucked for Edmonton…at least we will almost definitely get something better than a Lupul in return!
I just think it’s ironic how much everyone HATES Pronger, but don’t mind the rumors that they’re potentially going to get him.
He’s got such a love/hate relationship with the NHL.
GO DUCKS!! Girlwithapuck.blogspot.com
I fully hated Pronger before he put on that Anaheim uniform. Especially since the last thing we saw of him was that Edmonton series. It’s natural.
And if the Ducks ever trade Corey Perry, I’ll hate him instantly.

That made me laugh…probably cause I totally understand why.

If the Ducks ever trade Perry then it’s time for Murray to be ousted.

Oh, he’s not on my “untouchable” list — I imagine there’s Perry deals in some design that could improve the Ducks. My untouchable list really is just Getzlaf and Ryan.
And Pahlsson.

I don’t think it’s on youtube yet. It didn’t look like Thomas was sleeping, but I didn’t see a slo-mo replay of it. It was just a strange little slapper. Thomas reacted strangely — he had come out of his crease, and I guess he knew immediately that it got past him, so he didn’t look back. He just skated immediately to the bench (presumably to get outta there as soon as possible).
Here’s what I’ve found so far — http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?hlg=20082009,2,923
For the OT goal, start watching at around 3:45 of the video. On my screen, the resolution isn’t good enough to actually follow the puck into the net, but I’ve read that it hit Thomas’ glove and went in.
Ugh
We’re playing two different games out there — Dallas is trying to get the puck to the net, Anaheim is trying to get the puck past the blue line.

If only one of those Bobby Ryan chances had gone in — not only would the Ducks have the extra goal, but it would have made a difference in the momentum.
Mr Momentum is always huge.
They apparently can only play 20 minutes worth of solid hockey.
Now would be a great time to prove me wrong.

Cool. That means we probably have five more minutes at some point.

His last name is made up, he spent most of his life with an actual last name.

His last name was “Stevenson” but we already have a “Logan Stephenson” among our prospects so, graciously, Bobby changed his last name to “Ryan” to clear up the confusion, because we don’t have any other players named Ryan.

Haha, what the heck? @ tumadre: Bobby’s last name was Stevenson, but his father changed the family name to Ryan after he (the dad) jumped bail and moved across the country. It’s all in this Sports Illustrated story on Bobby Ryan that came out earlier this month.
just got done reading it. WOW.
Well good for him.
I guess i can trust him now, he has a good excuse.
But i dont know about that Brokenyard guy.

Well, it probably wouldn't be a proper Bubble Saturday game
if the game weren’t tied after two.
Dare I say? HUGE period for the Ducks.

Getzlaf needs to actually do something!

wonder why?

And Ebbett is amazingly affordable next year. Within spitting distance of league minimum.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Yeah, McDonald might be a better comparison — but they’re all sort of in a “complement Selanne” mold, and all were incredible salary bargains when they started.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Yeah, but then he’ll be a restricted free agent — he could be a new version of Kunitz, in a sense.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Say what you will, but I will have a hard time criticizing a salary cap strategy that finds incredible bargains and plays the hell out of them, but then trades them away at the point they cease to be salary bargains.
Pittsburgh can never have the Kunitz bargain we enjoyed, and St. Louis will never get to see a bargain McDonald. Penner, Lupul, etc. — yeah, Ebbett may get his ultimate payday with another team, but I like the dirt-cheap version we’ve got.

Combined with trade deadline stress, it’s quite a whammy.
Ott is a puke. Good to see Moen step in — but hopefully it’s not his last act in a Ducks uniform.

No
Fuck you Giguere.
That was a dick move on his part.

Yeah blame the retaliation to dickishness and try to pass that off as the real dickishness.

I only got one look at it, but it seemed like GIguere was more trying to tie Ott up (and stop him from cross-checking Scott) than to deliver beatings (which is what Moen stepped in to do).
If Ott has a broken hand, it’s on him to avoid fights and situations like that.
Tie him up?
He delivered a nice slash to the back of Ott’s legs.
Now yes, I realize this is an art form that Marty Turco has taken to new levels at certain times during his career. I don’t like it anymore when he does it.
Anyway, I’m sure it was a heat of the moment thing, just like my comment about him. And ultimately, Ott’s the one who started it all with his shenanigans.

Yeah, perhaps “trying to tie Ott up” was being a little too generous to Giguere. I’ll probably go back and have another look when the replay is posted on GameCenter Live in a few days.
But you’re right—none of these jokers is going to be nominated for sainthood any time soon. Thanks for coming back to follow-up.
So as see-saw-ish as this road trip has been
Already before going to Chicago it’s been a mild success. It’s not just that they’re 3-2 so far, but regulation wins in key bubble games against Columbus and Dallas means they’ve beaten the right opponents, too.
Should be an interesting stretch run.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Now hopefully Kunitz and his Pens can come into Dallas and do the same tomorrow…
