Ducks Gameday—Nine games to go, a frightening opponent

Anaheim Ducks (top eight!) at Colorado Avalanche (top fifteen!)
Psst, buddy, wanna get Mile High?

I am so goddamn scared, I tell you.  On the one hand, the Ducks have miraculously gotten exactly where we want 'em, holding tight to that eighth spot with nine games left to play -- the hope of a postseason BoC isn't dead yet.  On the other hand, though, the Ducks travel to play the 15th-place Avalanche tonight, and while that seems somewhat promising, the Ducks haven't been a great team at taking "easy" points.  In fact, if you look at Anaheim's record this year against bottom-ish teams (ATL, COL, DAL, LAK, NYI, PHX, TBL, TOR), the Ducks have won 8 games in regulation and their opponents have won 9.

Ducksavs_medium
Yeah, that's my rendition of a little yeti with a big shadow.  Deal with it.

But I dunno, maybe all the Ducks needed was some late-season Sleek pessimism to get 'em over their speedbumps -- here's my gameday predictions for the last four games:

NSH@ANA
Prediction: At this point, my main focus isn't winning -- the Ducks are probably better off looking at how they can end the season below the Kings in the standings (for a better draft position). Ducks 2, Predators 4. Goals by Tigh and Hera.

ANA@PHX
Prediction: I finally set my sights on the Ducks losing, and they win?! They'll get it right tonight, though. 'Yotes 4, Ducks 3. Goals by Nick at Nite, Fake-Pahlsson, and Vishdog 2.0.

PHX@ANA
Prediction: I won't be around for the start of the game, but I'll join in somewhere in the middle. Ducks lose 3-2 and blow my spreadsheet to bits. Goals by Pahlsson (the real one somehow) and Rob Niedermayer.

ANA@NSH
Prediction: Ducks lose 4-1. Goal scored by Positivity the pesky dog.

Largely out of character (I think this matches the total number of losses I predicted in the prior 2 1/2 seasons of gameday posts), but it's a post-Pahlsson universe now, and I can gladly be wrong each and every damn time...well, until the first time it really fails me.

Prediction: Avs 3, Ducks 2.  Goals by the Wizard of Niewski and the Prince of Onger.  I'm iffy on the comments tonight -- if I do make an appearance, it'll probably be towards the end of the game.

Go Ducks.

I think we should pick up Negativity the narcissistic cat. (he might be cocky, but he’s a real cool cat.)

Nice cartoon Sleek. It made me chuckle.

Yeah, let’s hope he clears waivers. But he definitely needs some ice time, and just wasn’t getting enough minutes with the big club.

Eight games left after this — depending on how things go, we may get an appearance.

Is this reverse jinx working??

wonder if it will work to get the Sharks past the second round?

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

by ang6666 on Mar 25, 2009 8:53 AM PDT reply actions

Well, let’s not get too crazy optimistic just yet — it is still only four wins against Phoenix and Nashville, not necessarily the most outrageous achievement (though for this Ducks team, it’s like Rushmore on top of Kilamanjaro).

Still, can’t complain about it thus far. Even though the Ducks have surrendered standings points to eight of its last nine opponents and blown third-period leads with amazing regularity, here they are in the 8th seed. Amazing.

Fuck you, Denis Gauthier. You suck at hockey... and life.

hey now!! I’m sure you can muster some little bit of positive energy for the Sharks … I have mustered a bit less bitterness for the ducks this season … given their performance … ya know … the whole, can’t kick a dog when it’s down thing. but now that they are in the playoff running (#7 as of now), perhaps it means I can go back to hating them again … :)

u guys did kick us when were down…..i know cuz me and sleek witnessed it…how cruel is it..when we pay a tribute to an ex-player…the crowd gives a standing ovation…then he scores the winning goal….sounds like kicking when down to me….could have let us scored a goal…or two…u dont need the gawd damn points we doooo!!!!!

Now now, Spade. There’s still two games remaining where the Sharks could be extra generous. If the Ducks win ’em and the Sharks lose ’em, it could set up for a nice #2-#7 BoC matchup.

Maybe it’s time for some under-the-table dealing.

the return of the sleek toons

has been good….

gotta give props to jiggy..ive been down on him this year…(although losing your dad might fuck things up)…but his leg save and that cross ice save was classic…and he didnt stink up the shoot out…gotta give him love

still not on the cautious side….gotta stop hitting goal posts…cash those fuckers in…

if the ducks have any tesicles…theyll win tonite…

the question is who starts in goal? hiller right?…or

I’d guess Hiller, but I don’t know if I should be trusted based on my faulty prediction streak.

Here’s what’s cool, though — it seemingly doesn’t matter right now who gets the call. Both goalies have been pretty excellent of late and both have stolen us points. To be honest, I don’t know if the Giguere-Hiller tandem has worked out better at any point in the season as it has in the past week.

Ducks have made me look like a fool on other message boards, I called the season over and they start winning…. I still think Jiggy’s been more lucky than good lately. This season he’s been uncharacteristically [damn that’s a lot of word modifiers] out of position.

Also, why does the Shark look like he as a loaded diaper? Could it be that he is scared of a first round Ducks-Sharks matchup? We can only hope….

by Itlan on Mar 25, 2009 4:36 PM PDT reply actions

I called the season over and they start winning….

You’re definitely not alone there. I figured the team was finished after the game they lost to Travis Moen (and wasn’t afraid to tell Spade that many times), thus my transition into predicting losses.

But hey, even though the Ducks have made me look stupid on plenty of occasions this year, at least now they are doing better than expected. That’s a welcome change.

by Earl Sleek on Mar 25, 2009 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Your new favorite site shows the Ducks with better than a 50% chance of making the playoffs. Never thought I’d see that again. Especially since they were at 18% after the loss to SJ.

by Itlan on Mar 25, 2009 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I have a very much love-hate relationship with that site. Basically, the Ducks’ playoff odds over time mirrors my site appreciation.

I’m yet another one who thought the season was over. Oops! Well, I’m glad to be wrong.

I still think Jiggy’s been more lucky than good lately.

Meant to say something here, too. I’ll agree with some of this — definitely he got lucky on Sullivan’s OT flub, and I think probably on the shot that Scotty Niedermayer blocked.

But compared to where he was post-ASG, I think he’s improved a good deal. There were a few saves yesterday that I think would have gone in a couple of months ago.

Also, why does the Shark look like he as a loaded diaper? Could it be that he is scared of a first round Ducks-Sharks matchup?

It could be. It’s kind of suspicious that the night that the Ducks earned 2 points to push temporarily into the 7th seed, the Sharks got a point to get out of the 2nd seed.

Scaredy-cats.

by brokenyard on Mar 25, 2009 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m watching the Colorado feed (man, those boards are loud!), and they showed the 10 or so guys on the IR list — pretty sad. And they lost Salei early in the first, so they’re skating with 5 D-men tonight.

Definitely. The second Perry goal was pretty sweet, but the others have been chucklers.

Except, sort of unbelievably — Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan, Scott Niedermayer, and Chris Pronger were all kept off the scoresheet.

I don’t suspect he’s itching to sign in Anaheim after being dumped at the deadline.

Whatever, I guess. Chicago or one of 28 other clubs — that makes no difference to me. I don’t know if I’m going to stress about it for three straight months until July 1st, though, especially based on rumor or hearsay. That’s an issue for way down the road.
