Sharks-Ducks, Game 2: Post-Game Chatter
In the 2 games: San Jose went 0-12 on the power play, Anaheim went 2-6. And I guess now some gloating is in order.

What do you know? These are saltwater Sharks.
Heil Hiller. And his mighty posts.
Go Ducks.

Nope, you had it (sorta) right the first time. 45 SOG by the Sharks. 43 saves for Hiller. 78 saves over two games. 2 goals allowed in 80 shots. 0.975 save percentage. (giddy laughter)
also, is it just me, or did we break BoC temporarily?
Grack, bad math. 44 SOG by the Sharks. 42 saves for Hiller. 77 saves over two games. 2 goals allowed on 79 shots. 0.975 save percentage. (same giddy laughter)
anyone want me to do there taxes?….

I feel like fucking hell. Just wanted to come over and say Hiller is a goddamn demon from hell, and that should be taken as a compliment. This shit is getting way too much to bear, I feel like I’m losing five years off my life every goddamn postseason.
Sharks may come back, but I’m staying the fuck away from BoC comments until the series is over. This probably makes me the biggest douche in the world, but my mental state comes first and to some degree yours- frankly I’d just sound like a pouty lil bitch if I tried to join in on anything.
See ya’ll at game four. Spade I’ll send you an email and we can find a place to meet up.

It’s probably not the same thing, but we felt like crap last year — winning like crazy to take 4th seed from Dallas only to drop G1 and G2 in Anaheim — by a much worse margin than this.
But yeah, understood.

President’s Trophy winning team getting buthurt.. who does that remind me of? Ohhhhh.
Wings. I almost forgot.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
When I moved to Denver, I took my dad’s collection of Red Wings glasses, featuring the years of each of their championships on each glass. I have 10 glasses, and could really use an 11th to make up for last year. Of course, if I were an Avalanche fan, I’d have what, 2?
Just sayin’. Ya know.

Once a Wings fan, always a Wings fan. And I thought you were different. I was wrong.

Oh, I never claimed to be reformed. In fact, I’m a dirty subversive living here in Denver with Red Wings junk in my apartment, and everyone I’ve met out here lets me know it. I just like to think I’m smarter than the average bear wings fan.
Hey, theres pretty much only three things I can hold over Colorado, as a Michigander. 1) better sports, 2) music, 3) car culture. I think on everything else, Colorado kicks Michigan firmly in the balls. I gotta hold on to what I got.

Yikes. I took a peek over there, and I felt kind of like a voyeur. Somehow, it doesn’t seem right to witness their anguish.
Good point made by Hayward
It’s such a rarity, I thought I’d point it out. But all three goal scorers tonight — Ryan, Ebbett, and Miller — did start the year as Iowa Chops.
Go Pigs.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Ebbett and Ryan were also the last two forwards cut from the Ducks roster before the season. Makes you wonder why Burke didn’t have a little more faith in his farm system, instead of trying to wrangle a paycheck for an old Canuck.

Oof. Don’t get me started on that. You’ll start getting nothing but strings of expletives for paragraphs. I don’t think SBN can talk all that profanity in such a short span.
Don't bRuin your life. Make love with a Trojan
Well, I’m convinced there was a Vancouver poker game where Burke lost his shirt to Bertuzzi and Morrison. Naslund was probably dealing from the bottom of the deck.
On the plus side, we did manage to screw them by fishing McIver out of their trash can, and then selling him back to them for Brown.

No shit. And here’s something I’ve never understood — like 12 or 24 hours before the Brown-McIver trade, couldn’t Vancouver have just claimed McIver off of waivers for nothing? Why pass that up then offer Brown?
http://www.battleofcali.com/
LA Times did a story today about how Carlyle and Murray were interested in Brown. So, I know the Ducks actively pursued him. They were both two-way $525K contracts. So, my best guess is that it was a favor of some kind or the Canucks would have lost their spot in the waiver claiming order if they picked him up.
Still, on paper, it reminded me of when we got Tverdovsky back, leaving us with Selanne and Tverdovsky and the Jets with Kilger and Green.

Ducks
Hey guys/gals, New to the forum, Im from south africa but moved to winnipeg just in time to witness selanne break bossy’s record and have been a fan of him ever since and consequently the ducks. I know a lot about this team and even some of the prospects ( a little to obsessed). I think this team this year has a solid chance of taking down SJ, nevermind the 2-0 lead. Any team with pronger neidermeyer getz selanne perry and ryan is a cup contender doesnt matter who else they have. a hot goalie doesnt hurt. Anyways just wanted to say hi, ive been following the forum for a while but only decided to join up now. Viva ducks!

Hey, welcome to the community — thanks for not being too put off by our brash style.
Hot goalie makes a lot of things look good. Giguere, Bryzgalov, Hiller — apparently we’re as lucky as hell.

oh yeah, i live close to vancouver BC in Canada, and unfortunately my best buddy is a ’nucks fan so hopefully the two teams meet in the west finals then ill be flying back in forth with him trying to catch all the games in anaheim and vancouver. and yeah, giggy will figure it out. hes a big time goalie, hell of an insurance to have him sit on the bench regardless of how well hiller is playing.

A Ducks/Nucks final? That sounds like a terrible Western final!
But seriously, I bet a Ducks/Canucks western final would have at least 3 multiple OT games. AT LEAST.
http://redwingsvbluejackets.blogspot.com/
haha im just hoping, its the only way ill be coming to anaheim to watch a game, and the only way ill be able to watch any ducks playoff games live. vancouver is relatively clost to me. and it is possible if anaheim gets past sj then detroit is a bigger obstacle, but possible.

What are you talking about? I believe in this season’s four-game ANA-VAN series, the teams each averaged over four goals per game.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Looking at how “on” Hiller and Luongo are right now, if they’re both at that level in a series against each other, there might not be 4 goals scored in the entire series.
Er wait…
http://redwingsvbluejackets.blogspot.com/
Just a fun FYI: Hiller and Luongo did face each other in a shootout this season that didn’t get settled until the 13th round (total shootout goals: 3)
http://www.battleofcali.com/
yeah i went to the recent game that was 6-5 ducks in a shootout. such a good game, terrible goaltending and defense, but good game to watch

More upsetting would be the fact that a ana/van final would mean the Wings were eliminated. I’m the resident Wings fan who hangs out on BoC and won’t go away, so I tend to have these silly ideas like that.
But I would definitely watch it. 1) It’s playoff hockey. 2) I think it would be a series much like Anaheim/Dallas in 2003, and that was a phenomenal series.
http://redwingsvbluejackets.blogspot.com/
I suspect Francois Allaire buys two seats to every playoff game. Then, he sits facing the Ducks goalies and gives our goalies reminders of how to play great.
What happened last year? Steve Ott hit Allaire with a lead pipe probably.
However, the posts really helped again. In rod we trust.
"Concentration, not strength." - Coach GB
Holy fucking crap
Well, the shitty thing is that other than the power play (which was half good, half atrocious), I really couldn’t complain too much about the Sharks game. They shot, they hit, they crashed the net.
Sometimes shit happens. Even if they go out in the first round, I don’t feel like it’s the gutless phantom appearances of previous years. They did a lot right, things just aren’t going their way.
Still, I remind everyone that Carolina got smoked by the Habs the first two games of the 06 playoffs before coming back and winning the Cup. Coming back from 2-0 isn’t terribly unheard of, and if the Sharks played like tonight again and just got a few good bounces on the power play, anything is possible.
(Says the only non-suicidal Sharks fan on the planet)
San jose played very very well tonight, terribly unlucky. My opinion, which is wrong often, is that if Anaheim wins one game at home the series is over, with neidermyer hiller pronger, thats a pretty retarded group to have to beat 4 out of 5 games.
by Victorian Duck - 8 on Apr 19, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions
I think certain guys really came to play. Cheechoo was on a mission. I liked Roenick’s work out there. And then obviously Clowe. But I think the offense still lacked patience. They needed to set things up better, and create some real traffic. They let HIller see WAY too many shots.
And maybe it was the ice, but when the Anaheim PK goes from a diamond to a triangle, the Power Play needed to make that clean cross ice pass. Instead, they were shooting and collapsing. And HIller let all of maybe two rebounds land somewhere that was not RIGHT in front of him.
Definitely outplayed us, but didn’t cash in on those chances. And as a Ducks fan, trust me, I know that frustration.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Apr 19, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions
One of the problems is that Anaheim’s figured out how to stop the San Jose entry. They figured it out around the 3rd or 4th meeting this season. The Sharks were better today than Game 1 about hitting the zone with speed but you could still see the 4-in-the-neutral-zone thing was slowing down the Sharks.
Oh, that’s definitely in play. The Ducks are neutralizing the speed advantage. And if you guys do lose, and McLellan loses his job over this, that’s the one adjustment I think he could have made.
But don’t forget that Nabby had a great game. And that Drew Miller goal was basically just Scott Niedermayer waiting an extra second for his brother to plant his ass firmly in Nabokov’s face. The Sharks need to do more of that, ESPECIALLY when they have an offensive zone faceoff. Crashing the net is great if the rebounds fall outside of the goalie’s cone of vision, but Hiller’s in a zone.

I wouldn’t fire Todd. He’s done a hell of a job.
Like I said, sometimes you just run into a hot goalie. You can say they could have done X or Y but ultimately they played reasonably well in game 1 and pretty damn good today. Shit happens.
I don’t think Todd did ANYTHING to get himself fired. But I don’t think Barry Melrose did either. Firing in hockey is usually about the players, and since it works so often, teams do it often.
I only bring it up because I feel he’s done a lot to improve an already good team. He made some key adjustments between games one and two, and there are a few forwards that are still not giving him 100% right now. He called them out (though not by name) in the media, but in hockey that never seems to help a coach keep his job.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Apr 19, 2009 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Nah, you don’t fire a Presidents’ Trophy coach no matter what — that’s just silly.
Mike’s point is valid — this series could easily be 2-0 Sharks and we’d all be talking about McLellan extensions. We shouldn’t be rash in either direction on a 2-game sample where the opposing goalie got first star twice.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Well, I’m not saying he loses his job tomorrow (though don’t forget that Jacques Martin lost his job one season after Ottawa won the PT, and Hartley lost his job 1.5 seasons after Colorado won the PT and Cup). I just think that when you call your players out in the press and they still don’t produce, management starts to think they’re not listening to you. No NHL coach is immune from being second-guessed when that happens.
And I didn’t mean to step on anything Mike was saying. I just meant to say that the Sharks could be more patient with the puck, as something that they could improve upon in games 3 and 4. Other than that, I really do feel they made the right adjustments between games 1 and 2.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Apr 20, 2009 12:11 AM PDT up reply actions
i like the idea of what mclellan thought would be a good entry, the cross ice pass, the example was when marleau went offside in the beginning there. However, thats way to complicated for playoff hockey what wiht the grabbing and the pressure. I think just carrying the puck is the way to go especially with all your speedy big wingers, clowe cheech and michalek, man even boyle. Mclellan will figure it out, hes a good coach. i definately do not think san jose is losing this series at all, they are playing well. this is a very good team.

the power play (which was half good, half atrocious)
Yeah, I couldn’t decide if the power play sucked or not either. They’d get possession and do well for a minute, then they’d spend the second minute just trying to gain the zone or dumping it in and losing it. Whaddafux.
I really didn’t feel that SJ did a whole lot in front of the net though. There were a couple opportunities; Cheechoo’s goal, Pavelski’s chance early on Wiz, but it seemed like SJ never seemed to be able to set up in front very well. They could occasionally get a little break in there, but Anaheim quickly ended it. There was no cross ice passing near the middle, there was no passing across the crease to try and get a chance on the empty side, it was for the most part like everything between the hashmarks was lava, and the Sharks had to shoot at a net on an island.
http://redwingsvbluejackets.blogspot.com/
So you’re hoping for an injury to Niedermayer or Getzlaf? Because that’s how Carolina won that series: an unpenalized high stick that took Koivu out for the duration.
SNN Sports - A theoretical Oilers blog (i.e. theoretically, I write stuff there)
Based on what I know about Sharks fans, their list of injury candidates is probably more along the lines of Chris Pronger and Corey Perry. But yeah, I totally remember that Koivu high stick — a series-turner right there.

man im starting to appreciate the little things hes doing like throwing ryan in the box for the too many men on ice penalty. he knows that it will start the 3rd with only like 15 seconds left so he can kill the rest with perry getzlaf and then counter their offensive chance wiht our big line.

So, I know the big storyline of the Sharks in the playoffs this year, whether they win or lose this or any round, will be their reputation as playoff chokers. But that’s not the real story in San Jose. For the first 47 games of the season, the Sharks averaged 3.38 goals per game and 2.19 goals against per game. Over the last 35, they averaged 2.49 goals and 2.57 goals against. (regulation goals only, so not counting OT or SO goals)
The offense has just completely dried up in San Jose, and it’s been that way for a long time. And the defense has deteriorated as well. I don’t know why and can’t explain it, because the Sharks should be a good team. But the simple fact is that they’ve been an average team for almost half the season now. The really scary thing is that they finished the season near the top on the PP and PK, so most of the drop has come at even strength. That means for the last 35 games, the Sharks have been a downright bad team at even strength.
"Heil Hiller. And his mighty posts."
Sleek, we talked about this “(t)H®ILLER” is much more family friendly and won’t get you punched in the head nearly as often.
I hope my fellow friends of the quack attack aren’t engaging in hubris. Soon and very soon, the Sharks are going to get PISSED. Then their shots are going to center by an inch.
Oh yeah. I made this image once to remind myself, but it turned out kind of so-so and never got posted.
