Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Congrats Anaheim

You fuckers (and I say that with all due respect) shut down the Sharks speed through the neutral zone. And that Hiller guy was pretty good to.

No sour grapes, I promise. Thanks to all the BoC commenters (and the Fear the Fin folks) for keeping it lively and fun. I'll have a full Sharks post-mortem in a few days...in the meantime, Sleek and his Ducks can bask in their victory for a little bit.

Sleek, I owe you a t-shirt.

Hear, hear. Sharks may have some questions this summer about how they handled the Ducks, but the Sharks bloggers and generally our commenters have been top-fucking-notch. Well done.

I wanted to post this at FTF, but theres that waiting period

After the game, there were 3 or 4 fights that I saw, and from what I could tell, at least some started by ducks fans. sorry about any trouble this may have caused.
but great win for the DUCKS!

I will give a hand to a Sharks fan. I’m not much of a shit talker…but as they were leaving and I asked why they weren’t going to stay around and watch the hand shake, he just turned and gave me a high five, smiled and walked away. Maybe it’s cause I’m a girl…but he was cool about it.

There was some Sharks fans leaving in the 3rd and

this guy yelled, “see you later Sharks!!!”

The guy just kept walking, the girl, turned smiled and waved. For some reason this was extremely funny to me.
Maybe because there a beer throwing fight between Sharks and Duck fans during the 2nd intermission in the same section, kinda funny to see the two extremes.

I stuck around for the hand shake, partially because I was driven to the arena by a Ducks fan but it is nice to see two sets of people that were trying to kill one another just minutes before, be civil and shake hands once all is said and done.

by buddahead9 on Apr 28, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

That sucked

I just saw a lone sharks fan with 3 security guys and two cops all around him, and his boy was clutching his arm and crying.

I did not realize it was the result of a fight, but did wonder why the guy did not just walk away with his son, why put the kid through that?

When he did storm off after Getz’s goal, he looked like he was having trouble walking, like maybe too much ale.

Not that I’m one of those fans that can’t watch the team that eliminated my team, but now that the first round of the West in done… I’m really looking forward to watching a Chicago-Vancouver series. Yeah, stay away from it, andrew. Burnside is just too lazy to write anything other than the low-hanging-fruit storylines that you might imagine. If you believe JavaGeek’s shot-quality numbers in this series, the Sharks put enough quality shots on net in the series that per his calculations, they probably should have had 25.9 goals in the series.

Thanks to a Swiss savant named Hiller, though, they managed to score 10.

I don’t know if there’s much more analysis needed there — the Sharks seemingly played great, but Hiller demanded that they play even better.

http://www.battleofcali.com/

by Earl Sleek on Apr 28, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

That's why I think this was different than other years

Against Edmonton and Detroit, I really thought it was a choke job. But this series? I mean, what more could you expect out of the Sharks. Take goaltending out of the equation, and here what I think the winning %’s for the Sharks each game were:

G1: 50%
G2: 85%
G3: 90%
G4: 10%
G5: 90%
G6: 70%

The Ducks won the coin flip in game 1, and won the game they should have in game 4. And then Hiller absolutely stole 2 games that, really, the Ducks got outplayed in for long stretches. But you know what? Goaltending is a part of hockey, and if the Ducks had that on their side, so be it, they deserved to win.

Now, is that reason to split up Patty and Joe? I don’t think so. No one is questioning Ryan Clowe’s gonads, but other than a lucky shot that squeaked by a screened Hiller, its not like his will was a match for Hiller’s skill. Same for Torrey Mitchell, he played great but his crashing the net = 0 goals. JR played with a lot of fire = 0 goals. That sucks for Hiller, the low hanging “Sharks are Choker’s” story line is diminishing what a great series he had.

You don't understand

unless the Sharks get the Cup, save the world from an asteroid, and make first contact, they choked.

by Lurker Shark on Apr 28, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree. Strongly. I don’t expect the Cup, and I know that to even get a shot at a Cup you have to be both lucky and good. It’s hard.

Losing to a lower seeded team 5 out of 6 years is not justifying your seeding. Winning the Presidents Trophy and losing the first two games at home in round 1, digging an insurmountable hole, is squandering the hard work they put in the 82 games prior. Ditto to looking horrible in losing a must-win game 4. Having an elite, deep roster that gets outplayed all the way down the lineup by the 8th seeded team is, well, choking. You may not like the word, but there isn’t really another way of putting it.

My expectations for this team were set by the team and management. You make it seem like it’s our fault we believed them.

by ievans on Apr 28, 2009 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

That Ducks weren’t and aren’t a normal 8th seed. I believe Jaime Baker said it best when he said “This series isn’t 1 v 8, it’s Sharks v Ducks.” The Sharks also aren’t the first team to win the President’s Trophy and bow out in round 1. It happens.

Choking is what they did against Edmonton a few years back. Took the lead and then lost it.

There’s no blood or guts involved, but it is hard to watch, in a bad-train-wreck sort of way. Basically, this kid’s webcam captures him crying over the loss, and then his parents come in to tell him to get offline.

Not to add more fuel to the fire, but I’m sort of suspicious of the authenticity of this video. Yes, that is real emotion, but could this kid really have posted this video of himself?? If so, that is a whole ’nother level of messed up.

This may be the wrong place to ask this question

Was Perry’s elbow to Cheechoo’s head a suspension worthy hit? Cheech was already on his knees and Perry laid into him, leading with the elbow. Cheechoo didn’t come back out until the second period. I thought it was probably as bad as any elbowing Pronger did to get suspended in 2007. Anybody agree? Disagree?

It’s not getting mentioned anywhere today, but watching last night, I thought it was a fairly dirty play. (Of course, I had my teal tinted glasses on, so my opinion may be skewed)

by I.C. Wiener on Apr 28, 2009 11:25 AM PDT reply actions

I’m going to reply to this largely blindly — I didn’t get a good look at the Perry hit, and I had no idea until now that Cheech missed that much of the game.

All I really can vouch for is that Pronger came up to Perry in the penalty box just before the PK and whispered something to Perry (under a gloved hand), and Perry then pointed to the bicep-area of his arm (I’m no anatomist, but where 1950s greasers used to put their cigarettes). Assumedly that’s where Perry believes that contact was made, or at least that’s all he’s telling Pronger.

I’ll take a gander at the DVR tonight, though.

From the elbow on Giroux, I’m gonna say that that’s not what Perry’s intentional elbow looks like. I mean, he could have more than one in his repertoire, he is the ‘Bow Wonder to Prongs’ Captain Elbows, but I think that’s just how he follows through on his hit and he didn’t expect Cheechoo to be on one knee.

Hey Sleek or SK eleven or anyone else who was watching, what was Moen like in the handshake line? (I just saw one of Sleek’s comments over at FtF, and it got me wondering.) Curious to see what it was like btwn him and Robbie and his other old pals. Also, would it be too awkward to sign him back at the right price? Marchant’s turned out to be a great fill-in for #26, but somehow I’m not sure if I see Drew Miller as a permanent member of the checking line. Ryan Carter, maybe? (SK eleven, any thoughts on #20?)

by g r a c e on Apr 28, 2009 12:23 PM PDT reply actions

what was Moen like in the handshake line?

I did watch him a bunch in the handshakes, actually, though he had already passed Rob Niedermayer in the line, I believe. But whenever he came across a former teammate (I especially remember with Getzlaf), there was a good brother-hug and some good ear-whispering.

Moen seemed like he was good buds with quite a few — it was good to see, actually.

I have no idea where he’ll be headed this summer, though — I wouldn’t rule out the Ducks, but it could probably be just about anywhere.

by Earl Sleek on Apr 28, 2009 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, my thoughts are probably wandering too far into the future re: where Moen will end up. But I’m a nostalgic fool, and I miss our old checking line. Warms my heart to hear that (from appearances, anyway) some of the old friendships have remained intact.

Just curious if you caught the Marleau/Selanne handshake. As much as Sharks fans despise him, Patty always talks good of Teemu and mentions that he learned a lot from him while they played together.

by Mike Chen on Apr 28, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn’t catch that one myself — basically my attention was fixated on Moen towards the front of the line and JR in the very rear (except for coaches).

Roenick had an earful to say to a lot of Ducks — sure looks as if he’s hanging them up — including Hiller, who I am not convinced understood a damn word.

I was way too far away to take note on any of the hand shake madness.

I gotta say…after seeing what the new energy has brought to the team, I think I’d be okay not having Moen back. I wont be hurt if he decides to stay in chokeville San Jose. And I really think Marchant has been fantastic these past few months. Mike Brown is a great addition and even Parros has stepped it up majorly.

LOL, the Carter thing…funny. Okay…well first, I’d just like to mention that he’s not my FAVORITE player…but I’d gladly go puck bunny for him (this is ruining my reputation as an actual fan). Anyway, on that note…I don’t think they use him properly. For all purposes his being a healthy scratch obviously does nothing for him, but he’s more useful than they give him credit for. I was a big fan of his playing with Selanne. Selanne’s got so much speed that he really needs a few guys on his flank to crash the net, and I think Carter is great for that. I really liked the Ebbett-Carter-Selanne line. Carter, obviously a bigger center than Ebbett and I personally think it works well. It was good to see last night and I’ve been calling for that lineup for a while.

No crap. What did he take last night, 3 or 4 shots? And I think twice he was physically in the net behind Nabokov. Fuck yes, Parros. You’re now a fucking player.

I was a big fan of his playing with Selanne.

Carter was a good center for that role, and I think he was also the right center to carry around Bertuzzi. Basically Ryan Carter backchecks for two, so whatever lazy winger you’ve got should probably go on his line. And he’s got a wicked shot, also.

I’ve got no problem with a #20 Carter jersey. Much better than joining with the thousands of robots in a Selanne jersey.

I was actually surprised that there was a fight going on — during the opening faceoff, my eyes were on the battle between Corey Perry and Patrick Marleau. Marleau got his stick between Perry’s legs and gave him three swift shots to the junk. I thought that was going to turn into a fight right there, then I looked over and they were too late — Jumbo Joe and Getzlaf had beaten them to the punch (sigh).

I can say that I wasn’t very scared for the first Sharks power play — it seemed an opportune time to be shorthanded with Jumbo Joe in the box. But you’re right — overall it was out of his element (though this is the second time I’ve seen JT fight a Duck this season from the Row Bs) and another sign of the #1 seed caving to the #8 seed’s style.

Haha, that Pavelski-Whitney fight was absolutely HILARIOUS. It even had the added benefit of the “both guys are obviously too exhausted to throw punches” comedy at the very end. One of the highlights of the evening.

A few other observations:

That Corey Perry deflection goal was SICK. Dan Boyle is an absolute beast. Milan Michalek is fun to watch. Scott Niedermayer is just a hockey genius. Getzlaf might be a Thornton killer from here on out: they’re both big, Getzlaf has more killer instinct (and by killer instinct I might just mean, “willingness to be a douche when necessary”) and RG is quite a bit younger.

Anyone who says the Sharks window has closed is crazy, but the Ducks are going to be a pain in their asses for years to come.

Good times.
