Hard-hitting stuff there, PJ

Even got that robot Marleau to talk, sort of.

Out of curiosity, what is that media day like? Are you shuffled around as a group player-to-player or is it more of a do-what-you-will? Also, what’s the best thing you’ve stolen from the Sharks’ lockerroom? :)

Wow, it seems like the media was really pressing Boyle. It’s like they were trying to get him to say, “Yeah, past playoff exits got to this team and that’s why we lost.” He seems to have handled it really well, though.

by g r a c e on Apr 30, 2009 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

Two years ago it was a small media horde. The AP guy, the Mercury News and Chronicle reporters (since laid off and bought out), maybe one other blogger Ryan Garner, me, and one or two Sharks staff.

This year CSNBA started airing pre and post game shows, and their video crew and reporters/hosts nearly doubled the amount of media covering the home games, plus flirting with nhl history the first 30 games or so of the season drew a lot of national and Canadian guys.

End of the year for the playoffs all of the local tv crews descend on the games and some of the practices. Whenever I take photos I always bail for photographers from larger media outlets, and I always make sure I don’t block any media, fans or players when I take pictures. TV guys will push you out of the way and block anyone behind them, because they are more imporant.

None of the players wanted to be there, the coach thanked Ann Killion, Ray Ratto, Mark Purdy and David Pollak for being pleasant to work with before taking their questions. For some reason general manager Doug Wilson was more angry and upset than anyone else, and honestly I am not sure why that is. You want emotion, punching lockers screaming on the bench if you have not just five straight early playoff exits, but five embarassing performances that lead to your exit.

I am at a loss as to why this team came up short, and to be honest I think the heart issue is a valid one. In the past I thought people were too quick to jump on that. But it should be mentioned that several players were leaving it all on the ice. Unless you have 20 doing that from the drop of the puck in Game 1, you are going to keep getting these performaces.

Sharks

Lets be real—Sharks were somewhat of a fraud—they benefited greatly from playing many teams at home the second nite of back to backs in which initial game was with Anaheim—they had no roadtrips prior to All-Star game of over 3 games

by Love the wings on Apr 30, 2009 10:15 AM PDT reply actions

Well, every team’s somewhat of a fraud — I think you could pull a lot of the questionable game results out of the Sharks’ schedule and still be left with what looks like an excellent team.

And hell — I could give you way more reasons why Anaheim was a fraud (first seventy games or so), but here we are.

seems to me his beloved dead wings were playing very similar heading into the playoffs. How many games did they lose during the last month of the season?

by Mike in OC on Apr 30, 2009 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Sharks

But the Sharks not only lost 2 Ducks, but never played 3 periods of hockey, even when they won—the entire year I tired of hearding the talking heads refer to them as the best team in hockey—by the way there is a team in Detroit, and last I checked, noone else can repeat this season

by Love the wings on Apr 30, 2009 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

True. Their two wins were very shaky, and there were a lot of people in the stands, in the press box, and in the locker room who were very upset with the third period in Game 5. You can’t win in the playoffs like that.

The Sharks gave up 3 leads before earninga 4-3 win in Game 3. You don’t win in the playoffs like that. There were a ton of problems.

by pj48 on Apr 30, 2009 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Hey, they way things have looked so far — give the Sharks a Blues or Blue Jackets match-up in the first round, and San Jose would “fraud” their way right over them. “Best team in hockey” is a horrible label, but it’s not that hard to figure how they got it — standings may be flawed, but they do generally point in the right direction.

I guess I just have to draw the line between awful team, awful performance, and awful outcome. I don’t think there’s much of an argument that the Sharks were an awful team, and I’m a guy who leans more towards awful outcome. But there’s room for some debate there, I suppose.

by Earl Sleek on Apr 30, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Having 10 roster players out with injury, and one late injury returnee on each line in the playoffs against Anaheim (Marleau first line, Clowe second line, Grier third line, Mitchell fourth line) doesn’t help either.

by pj48 on Apr 30, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly, Sleek. This guy just got done watching the Wings play against Columbus in the first round, and he comes in here calling the Sharks a fraud? People who represent Glass Fanbases should not throw stones…

This season was a process of embracing mediocrity so there was no laughing or crying. Just a steaming pile of mediocrity which created melancholy. And on the goalie issue…. what? You mean two mediocre goals don’t make one bad ass muthafucka?

There is a ‘reply’ button. It’s next to the time stamp. You can even speculate directly to Spade-In-Victorhell (er, to his comment) about whether a marmot has chomped off his johnson!

On the topic of frauds, methods in identifying and insuring against: I recall the Wings were shut out at home … by Joey MacDonald … and the Islanders. Shit happens. Sometimes there’s a deeper lesson, and sometimes it’s just shit, you know? If I only observed the Wings’ final three weeks of the season, I might think, “huh huh, u frauds.” But then there was this whole rest of the season, with games against every team in the league…

I was listening to XM 204 today and Roenick was on. He basically gave a lot of credit to Hiller and said that even when they (SJ) were playing their best, Hiller was damn good. He also said he probably wont watch to see what the Ducks do because anytime that Perry, Getzlaf or Ryan score it will make him sick to his stomach.

He then apologized to Sharks fans for not doing better and said, “we they will be better next year.” Sounds like he might want to come back for one more season and a round in the post season. Sorry, I had to. :)

As you all know The Ducks blue line is suffering pretty badly. Wiz being banished to the Islanders really doesn't help much. What I'm about to suggest is crazy, probably not legal, and absolutely absurd. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

That is a picture of my girlfriend's dog, Mia. And the holder of that hockey stick is me. Every once in awhile I'll practice stick handling in my kitchen with a small tennis ball. The other day, this interested Mia and she sort of made a game out of it. I try to stick handle around her and she trys to get the ball. At first this was no challenge to me, but then the little bastard started getting really good. So, here's my solution:

The Ducks sign Mia to a 3 year entry level contract. She can't stick handle, check, pass, shoot, has no concept of what team she's on, and has pretty shitty cardio. But from a team that once employed the likes of Ryan Whitney and Steve Eminger, this is all easily forgivable. On the up side, she'll never take a penalty.... Unless they add biting or pissing on the ice to the NHL rule book. She's relentless.... Unless the opponents all bring bacon which they use as a distraction.
