Ducks at Wings: Game 1 Comment Thread
Everyone got so comment-happy earlier on today's gameday post that I felt obliged to start a new post for in-game and post-game comments. Remember, I'm in hiding for this game, but I'll be around a few hours after it's over.
Have fun! Play nice!
And go Ducks.

As April said in the original Ninja Turtle NES game, “You have my support.” Why? If the Ducks smack around the Wings, I won’t feel so bad as a Sharks fan. And since I grew up a Hawks fan, my main concern is Chicago getting through.
As for me, I’ll be watching the first period then leaving to catch an early-evening showing of Wolverine. I have a feeling it’ll be more along the lines of the crappy Brett Ratner X-Men movie rather than the awesome Bryan Singer ones, but who am I to question the Sexiest Man Alive?
Go California!
As April said in the original Ninja Turtle NES game
That’s just a beautiful intro right there — OK, it’s almost game time. I’m officially in hiding.

Holy Shit, they picked the shortest person they could to interview Pronger, didn’t they? He looks like Yao Ming next to her.

Ya know.
If Konstantinov hadn’t gotten fucked up in that accident, I bet the Wings have another Cup. He was the kind of defenseman we’ve never really had (and when we started to get one in Jiri Fischer, his heart stopped). Big massive defensively responsible highly physical d-man. Just a thought, as I reflect on how much I hate Pronger.

Ya, the Ducks better tough against those Wing jerks. You said it.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
I wondered when you would get here
I wanted to ask you, after doing my research on Chris Pronger’s reputation as a Wing killer… in MI, we always hated Adam Deadmarsh. Dude just seemed to have it out for the Wings, both as an Avalanche and later as a King. Was that perception shared here in CO too?
http://wingsvducks.blogspot.com/
Check out the Wings/Ducks coverage over at CycleLikeSedins!
Hmmmm
I really can’t answer that. I was pretty young when Deadmarsh was with the Avs… and I was doing young things… like going out and having a life more than watching a lot of hockey. He was traded just after I tuned back in. What I can tell you is that Deadmarsh was a total fan favorite and part of the Wing hating Avs core. I had tears in my eyes when he retired. Sorry I couldn’t answer your question better.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
Eh, at that time I was like 11-12ish. Go outside and play, then come home and eat dinner, watch hockey, and go to bed. Not a bad way to do things. Sadly, I eventually grew up.

I hear non center ice folks are getting ratforked again, they are blacked out on Verus, even San Diego

I can confirm we have been getting blacked out on Ducks games on Versus thusfar. I think the reason why the blackout is lifted is because the Dodgers are preempting the Ducks on Fox Sports Prime Ticket tonight.

a big difference is in the brashear hit the puck wasnt even close to the ranger guy. here, he passed the puck, then 2 or 3 seconds later brown hit him. the difference is brown doesnt have a history, but yes i agree it was a hit shot and dirty,

Well, I’m 1 for 2 on predictions right now.

But ya, know, I just have to point out that Brown’s hit on Hudler was no where near as severe as Lemieux’s hit on Draper. So, the rivalry might not quite be there yet. Now, if a Duck kills Lidstrom? They are on their way.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
He said that if the Sharks scored on the power play, it would be a laxative for their goal scoring.
I think he meant it would let the goals flow. Unfortunately, it turned out just to be shitty.

Well, with the period ending, it’s about how I expected. Detroit looks a lot like they did early in Columbus. Detroit’s respond on a very, very, very, very stupid penalty from Brown, and Franzen runs Hiller after scoring his goal to say “Yeah, we aren’t going to take that.”
Overall, not as bad as I thought they’d be coming out. Outside of the dirty hit (And yes, before you say anything, that is the definition of “Head-hunting”…), the Wings are doing well on the physical side of things. They just need to start using their speed to draw penalties.

on cbc, in canada, they are saying that it was a legal hit and that hudler is an idiot. the only reason the refs called it was cuz hudlers face bleeeds. haha and cbc hates the ducks, they always love red wings. i love it, hudler made a dumb play, lets see if he gets suspended

I dunno, the Versus guys seem agreed that it was suspension-worthy. Jones in particular was pretty fired up.
Justify yourself. How the hell did Hudler make a stupid play? He passed it forwards and was looking forwards towards the play. Brown was behind the play and nailed him from behind long after he had released the puck. Unless you’re saying Hudler should grow eye-stalks so he gets 360-degree vision, I don’t see how the stupidity lies with Jiri.

Yes! Lesson learned. Next time, he’ll make sure to rotate his head 360 degrees before moving up to the play 30 yards ahead of him. Great job, team!

ok, like i have said countless times, I AGREE THE HIT WAS LATE. hudler shouldnt have been admiring the play like that, watch the replay, im sure you will agree unless you are being bias as hell. all im saying is that it shouldnt be a big suspension because, it wasnt that bad of a play, it would have been better if hudler wasnt staring. if you will stop being bias im sure you will see that. im sure it will be a one game suspension, but if its more then ill be very suprised.
by Victorian Duck - 8 on May 1, 2009 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions
It’ll be more. Bank on it. Take it to Vegas. He just took one of the NHL’s biggest stages, hit a guy very late, and he did it while intentionally going high to make the hit. Even if he does it with his shoulder, it doesn’t mean shit. He intentionally went high, and he intentionally did it late. SK might be right that the visor might’ve caused the cuts, its hard to see where/how exactly he was cut. He’s gonna be gone for a few games though. Hopefully Hudler won’t be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he got an orbital broken or his jaw, depending exactly where the shoulder landed.

As long as Bertuzzi’s. Fuck NHL discipline. If it’s one game, it’s too short. If it’s six games it’s too long. It’s all unjust and bs in the end.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
I know, I know. But I don’t see the stupidity in the play; he’s got his head up and the hit was well behind the play. It could have been easily avoided. He targeted the open head, and that’s why I’m angry.

Brown's Hit
3-4 games? What does everybody think he gets (or what he should get vs. what he does)?
Saw there was some pretty big discussion up there, and I’m going to have to side with Joe & Justice. It seemed pretty blatant. I thought it deserved four, but doubt Campbell has the nuts to lay down that sort of ban hammer in the playoffs.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
brasheear 5, and that was no where near the puck. not even close, the puck was in the other zone and the ranger was changing.
by Victorian Duck - 8 on May 1, 2009 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Brashear was for six, but I see what you’re saying. I doubt Brown gets that much anyways due to the fact that he’s a lot more instrumental to the team (PK duties etc.) and Campbell’s extremely inconsistent when enforcing these types of plays.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
brashear was 5 for the hit, and one for pregame contact actually.
by Victorian Duck - 8 on May 1, 2009 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Really? I usually side with them, but I can’t see how they can say it wasn’t even worth a penalty.

give Brown 2 so he can still play in series and run Juro again. Visor may have cut Hrudler anyways.
Dum spiramus tuebimur
Again, two games, three max. Hudler’s still on the ice, despite Brown’s efforts. Brashear’s suspension is largely due to cracking the guy’s orbital bone, which eliminated him from the playoffs.

I was like 14 at the time, I think it was. We boiled it, like you’re supposed to (not because it makes it less slimy, but it makes it look much cooler, cause it turns purplish and makes the tentacles curl up). I put it in one of the giant ziplock bags, tucked it in my pants under my coat, and zipped up the coat. Believe it or not, in April in MI, we still need coats sometimes. I know, hard to imagine in a land where you never need a coat at all.
This was also before 9-11, so they mostly just wanded you for metal, and that was about it. Since then, I think they’ve added some patdowns.

What’s so disgusting? It was actually pretty cool. Before you boil em, they just look like a bunch of seafood. Once you boil em, they’re reddish-purple, the tentacles curl up and the suckers are still white, so they really stick out, it looks pretty sweet. And they aren’t slimy.
I threw it after Martin LaPointe scored a goal to get a hat trick. I ran out into the stairway, and turned to the crowd (we were right near the boards), and I lifted it over my head. Lots of people’s eyes got big and some of them were pointing at me. I turned and tossed it, and it landed near the faceoff circle.
You have to sidearm it, like a grenade. If you throw it like a baseball, you’ll destroy your shoulder, cause they’re kinda heavy.

Its less about the Sedins and more about Lou. He’s been pretty good so far, and if he can keep being great in goal, all he needs is a little bit of support at the other end to get them there. Their scoring isn’t great, but its ok, and with Lou, it might be enough to ruin someone’s day. Especially depending on what condition the team that wins ANA/DET is in after this battle.

RIP - Open ice hitting
Scott Stevens is rolling over in his grave … uh, wait … Scott Stevens is rolling over on his couch.
I guess this is not allowed anymore. shrugs
Don't bRuin your life. Make love with a Trojan
Not comparable. Stevens is coming forwards and is actually in the play. Kariya isn’t paying attention, and gets nailed, but they’re still in the play. With Hudler, Brown is coming from well behind the play, and behind him. He’s not coming from any place that Hudler should be logically looking from.
And I’m not even going to go into the difference between the shoulder and whatever the hell Brown hit him with (Forearm? Elbow?).
Frankly, I’m amazed at how prophetic Earl was:
" “Let’s try to keep it clean this year.” “What is this ‘clean’ you are referring to?”
"Don't touch my dream with your dirty hands!"

The CBC says hi:

My human anatomy is a little rusty, but unless Mike Brown is that guy from Total Recall and has a 3rd arm growing out of his shoulder, that’s not an elbow.
Queue red wing fans post some bizarre end around to try and say that its still an elbow.
Don't bRuin your life. Make love with a Trojan
good point, but Denis Gauthier got suspended 5 games for a hit with the same part of the arm. I know he has a shitty rep that probably played into it, but then so do the Ducks.

You’re a little late on the RIP. The NHL instituted the Major Interference in 2007. I remember one they called that year where Matt Cullen actually had the puck. I think he got forearmed the the face. It was basically five minutes for Injuring, but they called it Interference.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on May 2, 2009 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions
Sorry Justice and Rule, but it’s exactly the same type of open ice hit. You always want to get someone laterally (as Stevens says in the video, “I was moving left to right”). Here, Hudler looks into his zone, and spots Brown before he makes the play, but he turns his head up ice thinking he’s free of the hit. Kariya may have been skating north/south, and not turning, but he let go of the puck and took two strides to his right, looking up ice the whole time. Both guys made the play, got two beats, and were looking up ice. Both hits came lateral. Same play.
I’ve never said the Kariya play was dirty or Stevens hit on Lindros or anyone else. I can’t call this dirty either.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on May 2, 2009 12:33 AM PDT reply actions
As a Ducks fan, I’m okay with a suspension if there is one, although naturally I’m hoping there isn’t.
I don’t think the Brown hit was necessarily malicious, just careless, but there’s a good reason the NHL is cracking down on high hits, so I’m fine with them punishing Brown for this one.
No, this isn’t the same as the Brashear hit, which was obviously dirty. Brashear isn’t following through with his body, he’s following through with his elbow. I agree that it’s the same as the Stevens hit on Kariya (and frankly resembled Stevens’ hits on a lot of players during his career).
Interesting that the Versus crew thought it deserved a suspension while the CBC guys thought it was clean.
Just checking in the day after. Wow, what a game. The things I was worried about were there in full force. Perry scored and Teemu got a very important goal. Sasquatch was quite good for the Ducks as well with two assists. I really wish these games would stop being decided in the final minute, it gives me freaking heart failure. At least it didn’t go to overtime.

Good morning, everybody!
Sorry, last night turned into a real late-nite fest, including the fully nonsense movie “I am Bruce” — and I didn’t have the heart until now to read the 300+ comments.
On the Mike Brown hit, which seemingly will probably be the focus of anything:
I think he’ll get a suspension, and it’ll be whatever he deserves + 2 games for wearing a Duck uniform / hurting a Wing uniform.
As for what he deserves, not really sure there — what we sort of have to keep in mind is if that hit had somehow gone shoulder-to-shoulder, nobody would have blinked. Brown hits a guy hard in G1 of a series after dumping the puck in? That’s a good hockey play. Hudler’s head in a bad spot? Suddenly Brown’s a thug and whatever Duck label is convenient gets thrown right on his head.
It won’t help that Brown’s a grinder — in fact, they probably only penalize non-stars — and I’m not in favor that the hit happened, but it was probably closer to a good hockey play than most pro-suspension people will admit, and there was probably less premeditation into the result of the hit than people are willing to imagine.
He’ll be suspended — I don’t see how the combination of who Brown is vs. who Hudler is vs. where Detroit is vs. were Anaheim is doesn’t all work against him. And the Ducks will have to find another Iowa Pig to play some 4th line minutes. And Wings fans are going to be dropping labels like nobody’s business.
But hey — was a tied game late — and that’s the positive the Ducks have to take away. Too bad Brown’s hit will overshadow much of the useful talking points about G1.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
I think he’ll get a suspension, and it’ll be whatever he deserves + 2 games for wearing a Duck uniform / hurting a Wing uniform.
haha, that was kinda my same message.
I didn’t think it was a dirty hit and after seeing the images up above, i really don’t think it was.
And you’re right…it’s a shame that this is what is overshadowing the fact that the Ducks played well enough to have a chance against Detroit in this first game. I wish they hadn’t got lazy at the end. I think the Ducks can be better though, and that too is a positive thing to take from this game.
GO DUCKS!! DUCKSandPUCKS.com

It’s tough and borderline — very telling when experts and analysts take both sides of the fence. It was late (but close) and very bloody, and that’s probably enough. We’re a hockey fanbase that’s very willing to fill in the blanks from there.
I guess I’d just prefer to hear what outsiders say, but everybody who follows hockey does have some pro-Detroit or anti-Detroit bias, I guess. That’s not a team that many are indifferent to.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Right, I’m taking the late (but close) approach too. I’ll even say the “but close” automatically means it was late. That’s fine.
I was actually surprised to see that there was another side to the expert POV because it seemed like the media was going to be jumping up and down at the thought of the Ducks suspensions immediately. Hell, the VS. announcers could barely control themselves.
I really try to be indifferent when it comes to stuff like this. I don’t think I’m calling it “not dirty” just because I’m a Ducks fan. Then again I know because I AM…my opinion means nothing.
GO DUCKS!! DUCKSandPUCKS.com
If its shoulder to shoulder, you’re absolutely right, no big deal, and its sending the message that “hey, youre not going anywhere on this rink without me running into you”.
But he came from behind, circled a bit into Hudler, and specifically brought the arms up, looking for the high hit. If he just comes from behind and bumps Hudler, maybe its not even a penalty, maybe its just 2:00 for interference behind the play, who knows. But he came from behind him, as Hudler is looking up the rink to see if he needs to go up or drop back (it wasnt a great pass), specifically turns to make contact, and the most damning part to me is that he specifically tries to go high. If he just bumps him with the shoulder/chest standing up, I have no problem with it. The specifically and deliberately going high part is the smoking gun here, to me.
http://wingsvducks.blogspot.com/
Check out the Wings/Ducks coverage over at CycleLikeSedins!
Coming from behind isn’t a huge deal for me — a guy dumps the puck and you want to put a body on him, that’s expected. I don’t know if it matters terribly where exactly that hit comes from.
Don’t take this wrong, Joe, but I’m not really relying much on either Duck fan or Wing fan assessments of this — we’re all too close (basically, a smaller version of this comment thread happened between my Wings pal and Ducks pal I was watching with last night). It’s borderline — lots of people on both sides of the fence here, and at this point, I’m just listening to outsiders. They’re really the ones who can tell me how outrageous or outside-the-law that hit really was.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
which is exactly why I wouldnt’ give my opinion … cause I know I’m biased

So when you see Marisa Miller walk by, do you say, “damn she’s ugly”? Because even after being provided photographic evidence, you still conjure up an entirely alternate universe.
Red wing fans remind me of the fishsticks episode of south park, where Kyle doesn’t even bother arguing with Cartman because he knows Cartman’s ego is so ridiculous that he truly believes in a version of events that never happend.
Don't bRuin your life. Make love with a Trojan
That was a very winnable game for the Ducks, but I don’t see that as a positive. We need to win those games against Detroit. The Wings didn’t play that well, and I have a feeling we’re going to see a much better Detroit team tomorrow, and that game won’t be as winnable. I have a feeling letting this one slip away is going to come back to haunt Anaheim.
I keep refreshing TSN and ESPN to check for the suspension announcement. I suppose it’ll be later in the afternoon. According to this OC Reg’s Ducks blog entry, Hudler has admitted that the cut was from his own visor. So maybe that will help mitigate. Also, unlike Pronger’s suspensions, Brown was disciplined within the game — 5 min major, game misconduct. I was actually happy when those were called, because with the Pronger suspensions, I felt like at least part of the reason they were handed down was because penalties weren’t called in the games (if I’m remembering correctly), and there was the feeling that the league didn’t want Pronger to escape discipline altogether.
Great to see how Getzlaf responded to picking up most of Brown’s minutes, though.
Actually, Game Misconducts usually signal the NHL to look at a play, leaving the door open for a suspension. They just happen to watch Pronger so closely that they want to catch him for whatever the referees miss. Generally, when someone gets a Game MIsconduct, the NHL is prompted to review the play.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on May 2, 2009 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions
Yes, but, who are we kidding, the league was going to review this play no matter what. I think there’s going to be a suspension, but I am hoping that having him banished from the game, having had to play for 11 forwards, etc., will be a mitigating factor when the league spins its Wheel of Justice. Maybe knock a game off.
Arthur and Daniel talk the Brown hit at CLS.
There’s some I agree with strongly there (the easy application of “dirty” labels), some I’m a bit unsure of (how big a role the earlier Hudler elbow played), and a discussion of penalty options that’s a little over my head.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Sorry to link, but here’s the TSN discussion on the Brown hit where they bring up the Hudler elbow, and maybe Hudler’s responsibility to know he was out there against the 4th line, and should have expected to be hit. They actually talk about it back and forth, unlike HNIC and VERSUS.
I don’t know about the elbow because VERSUS didn’t show it. Usually Frankie doesn’t get up in arms like that. He may have been calling for a Major Interference of his own.

Hey, the guy was a great PKer in the Sharks series — he played more PK time than EV time — and he threw in two assists. I was shocked, but he’s quite the player.
More telling, though, is the thinness of the depth forwards — if Nokelainen is still hurt, I really can’t tell you the next guy in the Ducks pecking order to get dressed. Parros is already playing.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
I think Troy Bodie is the next dressed guy. But they did call up the “Black Aces” or whatever from Iowa. So, really they have options. They could even bring in a scorer.

I don’t know if Bodie is with the team right now. This OC Reg blog post (uh, yes, I do read other things besides that blog…) seems to indicate that RW Josh Green and C Petri Kontiola traveled with them to Detroit. But I don’t know anything about traveling rosters and how quickly they could get Bodie or any other Chop to Detroit.
Thanks, grace. I was guessing from the rosters in the SJ series. Versus doesn’t let you know who the healthy scratches are, and I hadn’t checked. Anyone they called up could be brought in on a game’s notice, but Green and Kontiola are probably telling of who Carlyle wants in this series, unless he’s looking to specifically replace Brown.

2 games. He didn’t hit him with an elbow, but he was late on the hit and it resulted in an injury. Basically, I look at plays and wonder, “Should that type of play belong in the game?” and I think late hits like that should be wiped out. At the same time, it was more of a “hockey play” than Brashear’s (where even if he was on time it still probably would have been a suspension) and Brown didn’t really seem to be sending a message or anything, so I’d make it a little less.
Although what the fuck do I know, the league is insane when it comes to this shit so it’s anyone’s guess. Also, I’m rooting hardcore for the Wings in this series, although I can see that Wings fans might make it hard for me.

That’s true — one dynamic I am looking a bit forward to, though, is how the crowd deals with it.
I mean, I know they’ll be vicious on him, but it’s always funny to me when a crowd that’s already in a long-standing habit of booing Pronger whenever he touches the puck has to also boo a different player. Sometimes it just turns into overload, and not all crowds can handle that two-villain discipline.

About that Perry-Ericsson fight:
My brother has this cat that is really fucking annoying. He’s constantly running around at 100 MPH, bothering people, getting into shit, but most of all annoying my brother’s older, slower, gay cat. (Seriously, he crosses his paws and gets a boner when you rub his ass. He’s the kitty Joe Thornton.) The old cat just kind of puts up with it because he doesn’t really care about much of anything, but every once in a while the young cat will wap his tail one too many times and then the old cat will lash out and smack the shit out of the young cat before putting him in a headlock. Then he’ll start licking him for some reason. (Like I said, he’s gay.)
That fight last night reminded me of those two. It’s not even like Ericsson wanted to hurt Perry (because he could’ve if he wanted to), he just wanted to let him know who was boss. Then he started licking him, which I thought was especially weird.
