Draft Night Open Thread

I got a clarification from my source on the "Earl's gay" rumor, and he told me that he actually said, "Earl's hay."  I told him that didn't make any sense and then he started running down the street, laughing maniacally.  *Sigh*  I need new sources.

I’m trying to decide if I want the Islanders to grab Duchene and see New Yorker’s jump off the Empire State Building but risk Tampa selecting Tavares. I think what should happen is that New York should select Duchene and then Tampa should trade the Kings their pick for free. We’re friends!

The West Coast is the Best Coast.

by RudyKelly on Jun 26, 2009 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

I like how everyone says Garth Snow hasn’t said a word about who he’s going to pick but somehow the “conventional wisdom” now says he’s going to take Duchene. Ah, media folk.

I think they’re desperately trying to concoct a scenario where Toronto gets Tavares.

I hope if Brian Burke fails to accomplish anything other than a normal draft (TSN just said his Kaberle deal is off) that he makes Ron Wilson explain why to the throngs.

I agree nut, but we get nothing for Scott. My perfect senerio has us dumping Jiggy and keeping both Dmen.

Oh well. so much for my Pronger jersey.

by Mike in OC on Jun 26, 2009 2:59 PM PDT reply actions

Is there some salary-related reason that keeping Scott means you have to trade Pronger? It seems like you’d either keep both and go for a Cup or lose both and rebuild.

The West Coast is the Best Coast.

by RudyKelly on Jun 26, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I think because of all the other contracts that have to be signed and the projected raises, there is no way. Also, I read that the owners are imposing a strict salary figure (less than the 56 mil. Last season they wanted payroll to remain at 50 mil or below).

by Mike in OC on Jun 26, 2009 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

If you can get something for Giguere you’re in good shape.

by Nut on Jun 26, 2009 3:00 PM PDT reply actions

Am I the only one...

Am I the only one that still thinks Giguere is better than Hiller? I’m not saying that Hiller isn’t a good goalie, and is probably a relative bargain compared to Giguere, but I still believe that Jiggy is a better goalie than Hiller. In particular with rebound control. Now, do I think the Ducks should trade Hiller, I’m not sure about that. But I think Giguere has legitimate shot at starting again for the Ducks.

I think I read somewhere that the Ducks are not very deep in goaltending beyond the top two guys. I think Hiller is a better trade value to any other team. I think the Ducks could get a NHLer and a pick or at least a couple of prospects (hopefully a goalie prospect) for Hiller.

Either way, I’m not so sure about trading Giguere. Granted, if the Ducks could get something for him (not like what happened with Bryzgalov), then I think the Ducks should think about the trade.

But in my mind, I think the Ducks are a better team with Giguere in net than they are with Hiller. I just feel that he had a bad year like he did a couple of seasons ago.

by Wooster11 on Jun 26, 2009 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Giguere cost us at least 7 wins last season. He was fuckin terrible. if you keep him, you keep the goalie that is older, makes WAY more, and might be the suck from now on. With no Allaire to correct Giguere, he could remain awful.

Hiller is younger, looked better last season, kicked ass in the playoffs, and makes around 2 mil.

It’s an easy decision when you forget about the past and remove all emotion. It sucks because I love Giguere.

by Mike in OC on Jun 26, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’ve never thought Giguere was worth a shit. He is, along with Labarbera, the worst goaile in the history of shootouts.

by Nut on Jun 26, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I definitely will give you the shootout thing. Giguere is terrible in that, but that’s because he’s a positional goaltender.

It’s the really athletic/reactionary goaltenders that do better in the shootouts. And Hiller by far is better than Giguere in that.

by Wooster11 on Jun 26, 2009 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions

7 wins, huh? I wasn’t actually keeping count, but I trust you on that.

I still think Hiller still needs some work, but getting to play more might just be what he needs. I feel that Hiller doesn’t catch or swallow the puck up as well as he should be. A lot of times it hits him, falls right as his feet/knees, then he covers it up. I’d like to see those pucks disappear more.

I wonder how the no trade clause in Giguere’s contract will play out here. He definitely wants to play and wouldn’t want to sit on the bench the whole season, but with his son’s medical condition, and other considerations, I think it’d be hard for him to waive it. I remember reading in the OC Register that he had no intention of leaving at all, which I don’t think is common for many players to say that when they have a no trade in their contract. For him, it’s easy enough for him to say no to any trade and just sit and be a $6 million backup. I think the Ducks should entertain all offers for any of the two goalies and see what happens. But it’s going to be hard or impossible to keep Niedermayer, Pronger, and Giguere.

All I’ve got to say is I’m glad I’m not in Bob Murray’s shoes right now.

by Wooster11 on Jun 26, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

7 seems a little hyperbolic and covers up the fact that the Ducks kind of sucked for a lot of last year.

Thats about how many Labarbera cost us in his short stint.

by Nut on Jun 26, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah they did suck for a long time last year. Kind of felt like they were the Clippers for awhile… (would be in games but never could win one).

What was it… the Ducks didn’t win 2 straight games for something like 3 months??

I still don’t know how they managed to finish in 2nd in the Pacific – I guess the fact that Dallas completely fell apart didn’t hurt.

by Wooster11 on Jun 26, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel 7 is generous, but we can just count how manny loses Giggy had wher he gave up 4 or more goals. That should be a close.

Irregardless, he just flat out looked bad. 40-50 foot wrist shots BAD.

by Mike in OC on Jun 26, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

guys it was horrible. I remeber the game where Giggy gave up 3 goals and got pulled. slammed his stick got all pissed off. kept yammering on the bench.

mean while, duck score 2 and get within one goal, somehow Randy pulls Hiller and puts Giggy back in net (maybe Giggy pled his case well), he gives up 3 more goals, gets pulled again in favor of Hiller.

in terms of return for what you gave up, yeah, its good. But in terms of making the actual choice to make the trade? I don’t think so. ANA’s best chance at a cup is with Pronger back there to break anyone in half who goes near his net. Lupul + 2 1sts doesn’t help you as much in trying to win a cup.

I think keeping him would have been costly, though — his next contract will probably be higher than what we paid him.

http://www.battleofcali.com/

by Earl Sleek on Jun 26, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, he’d be 35 by the time a new deal comes up, which pushes the price down because of the guarantees that come with contracts for old guys. Also, this years cap is near-static, and next year figures to either go down or at best, be near-static again. This severely diminishes the cap room available, especially for the big (and often dumb) spenders, so he’d have fewer options. Those factors combined would lead me to think you could extend him for the same or even maybe a little less, assuming he’s all happy (and his wife is happy) in ANA. That would just be the big question, is if he’d be interested in staying. I would’ve gone for that. He’s too good a piece to lose, in my opinion.

I don’t think there was much choice in this matter. Assuming that Niedermayer does actually re-sign with the Ducks (at least that what his intentions are) and the fact that I really I have a hard time believing that Giguere will waive his no-trade clause, the Ducks could really only trade Pronger (or a Getzlaf or Perry which would be even worse).

And we did get a pretty good return, even if it was Lupul. I think Murray is a bit desperate to get some secondary scoring so someone like Lupul appeared pretty attractive to him.

We should also keep in mind that Lupul’s career bests are still with Anaheim in 05-06 season with 28-25-53.

If he isn’t moved again (which actually wouldn’t surprise me if it did happen), I wonder where he’ll play. Will he be able to play on the left side where the Ducks need it. Unless Selanne doesn’t return, I think Lupul will have to try to play LW.

If Hatcher was still on the team, the Flyers probably take the cake for douchiest team and fans. With the likes of Sean Avery on NY, we know which division is getting the 2010 Sir Douche award (the counterpart of the Lady Byng, of course).

2003 was an exceptional class, but with picks #19 and 28 the Ducks were able to snag Getzlaf & Perry.

Can they pull out something even close to that with #15 and 21 this year? Almost time to pay attentioin.

and piss him off it did. did you catch Burke shake his head when they announced it?

Dean just moved up 2 spots on my chart.

by Mike in OC on Jun 26, 2009 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

WOW!

The reaction at the Bell Centre when the Pronger trade was announced was a mix of stunned disbelief and then embarrassed laughter. Whatever Philly is smoking, I want some. The poor Flyers fan I was with was pretty inconsolable. No amount of beer and poutine was going to cheer her up.

And Burke’s reaction was PRICELESS! That guy’s head was about to explode. He was still seething when he had to get up and announce his back-up choice. And man, the crowd just gave it to him more. It was like he was fed by their hate. I half expected him to yell into the mic “BRING IT BITCHES!”

Wow. What a day! I still can’t believe I almost didn’t come to this!
