Draft Night Open Thread
I got a clarification from my source on the "Earl's gay" rumor, and he told me that he actually said, "Earl's hay." I told him that didn't make any sense and then he started running down the street, laughing maniacally. *Sigh* I need new sources.

I’m trying to decide if I want the Islanders to grab Duchene and see New Yorker’s jump off the Empire State Building but risk Tampa selecting Tavares. I think what should happen is that New York should select Duchene and then Tampa should trade the Kings their pick for free. We’re friends!
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
I like how everyone says Garth Snow hasn’t said a word about who he’s going to pick but somehow the “conventional wisdom” now says he’s going to take Duchene. Ah, media folk.
I agree nut, but we get nothing for Scott. My perfect senerio has us dumping Jiggy and keeping both Dmen.
Oh well. so much for my Pronger jersey.
Is there some salary-related reason that keeping Scott means you have to trade Pronger? It seems like you’d either keep both and go for a Cup or lose both and rebuild.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
Am I the only one...
Am I the only one that still thinks Giguere is better than Hiller? I’m not saying that Hiller isn’t a good goalie, and is probably a relative bargain compared to Giguere, but I still believe that Jiggy is a better goalie than Hiller. In particular with rebound control. Now, do I think the Ducks should trade Hiller, I’m not sure about that. But I think Giguere has legitimate shot at starting again for the Ducks.
I think I read somewhere that the Ducks are not very deep in goaltending beyond the top two guys. I think Hiller is a better trade value to any other team. I think the Ducks could get a NHLer and a pick or at least a couple of prospects (hopefully a goalie prospect) for Hiller.
Either way, I’m not so sure about trading Giguere. Granted, if the Ducks could get something for him (not like what happened with Bryzgalov), then I think the Ducks should think about the trade.
But in my mind, I think the Ducks are a better team with Giguere in net than they are with Hiller. I just feel that he had a bad year like he did a couple of seasons ago.
Giguere cost us at least 7 wins last season. He was fuckin terrible. if you keep him, you keep the goalie that is older, makes WAY more, and might be the suck from now on. With no Allaire to correct Giguere, he could remain awful.
Hiller is younger, looked better last season, kicked ass in the playoffs, and makes around 2 mil.
It’s an easy decision when you forget about the past and remove all emotion. It sucks because I love Giguere.
Yeah, I’ve never thought Giguere was worth a shit. He is, along with Labarbera, the worst goaile in the history of shootouts.
I would cringe every time the Kings went to shoot out with Labarbera in net
The reverse snow angel KILLED me!

7 wins, huh? I wasn’t actually keeping count, but I trust you on that.
I still think Hiller still needs some work, but getting to play more might just be what he needs. I feel that Hiller doesn’t catch or swallow the puck up as well as he should be. A lot of times it hits him, falls right as his feet/knees, then he covers it up. I’d like to see those pucks disappear more.
I wonder how the no trade clause in Giguere’s contract will play out here. He definitely wants to play and wouldn’t want to sit on the bench the whole season, but with his son’s medical condition, and other considerations, I think it’d be hard for him to waive it. I remember reading in the OC Register that he had no intention of leaving at all, which I don’t think is common for many players to say that when they have a no trade in their contract. For him, it’s easy enough for him to say no to any trade and just sit and be a $6 million backup. I think the Ducks should entertain all offers for any of the two goalies and see what happens. But it’s going to be hard or impossible to keep Niedermayer, Pronger, and Giguere.
All I’ve got to say is I’m glad I’m not in Bob Murray’s shoes right now.
7 seems a little hyperbolic and covers up the fact that the Ducks kind of sucked for a lot of last year.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
Yeah they did suck for a long time last year. Kind of felt like they were the Clippers for awhile… (would be in games but never could win one).
What was it… the Ducks didn’t win 2 straight games for something like 3 months??
I still don’t know how they managed to finish in 2nd in the Pacific – I guess the fact that Dallas completely fell apart didn’t hurt.
guys it was horrible. I remeber the game where Giggy gave up 3 goals and got pulled. slammed his stick got all pissed off. kept yammering on the bench.
mean while, duck score 2 and get within one goal, somehow Randy pulls Hiller and puts Giggy back in net (maybe Giggy pled his case well), he gives up 3 more goals, gets pulled again in favor of Hiller.
how about may 27th

According to Darren Dreger’s twitter (why the fuck are people using that to break news?), Philly and Anaheim are in serious talks over Pronger. So, cool?

Horrible thought just occured...
What if Lombardi is using his old chronies in Philly to get Pronger for him, and then have him shipped back to LA?

Are they trying to bring Lupul back? I don’t know if that’s a good idea. The Ducks are way too loaded on that right side (Same problem as the Kings, right Rudy?)
I wonder what the Ducks would get in return for Pronger. It’d be hard for them to take on much salary. This would be interesting…
I can’t say I know much about Philly. I like to think I’m giving the Eastern Conference the shaft by not following them just like how no one cares about the west…
It’s funny how you don’t how much you care about a player until you think they might get traded. When the Jack Johnson/Chris Pronger thing was going down, all I could think was, “Eh, no big loss, I never really like Jack Johnson anyway.” When I first heard the Frolov+5th for Heatley rumor, I almost cried. We can’t lose that mercurial Russian, I love him too much.

http://www.battleofcali.com/
That sounds about right. Lupul, the NHL player, Smid/Sbisa the prospect, and draft picks. I wonder what years those picks are for.
So check out Sbisa on TSN: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=6894, an Italian player… Not too common for the NHL, huh?
What’re you talking about, they have Ray Emery… wait, you’re right, they need a new goalie.

Wow. Thank you so much for getting Pronger out of the West and on to a team that will never be a legitimate threat to win a Stanley Cup.
I still think trading Pronger was a stupid move. He’s still one of the very best defensemen in the league. I’d keep him and win another cup.

I still think trading Pronger was a stupid move.
For essentially the same package we traded for Pronger three years ago? The first round picks are tempting for sure. Hard to call it awful at first glance.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
in terms of return for what you gave up, yeah, its good. But in terms of making the actual choice to make the trade? I don’t think so. ANA’s best chance at a cup is with Pronger back there to break anyone in half who goes near his net. Lupul + 2 1sts doesn’t help you as much in trying to win a cup.
http://sacrificethebody.blogspot.com/
Sacrifice the Body - Examining the NHL through statistical analysis, reasoned thought, and blind conjecture.
Depends if you’re looking at it as a one-year bet or a multi-year bet, I guess. I don’t mind thinking longer term than the 2010 cup.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
True. I think letting Pronger leave as a free agent would be silly though. I’d keep em till he’s 40ish.
http://sacrificethebody.blogspot.com/
Sacrifice the Body - Examining the NHL through statistical analysis, reasoned thought, and blind conjecture.
I think keeping him would have been costly, though — his next contract will probably be higher than what we paid him.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Well, he’d be 35 by the time a new deal comes up, which pushes the price down because of the guarantees that come with contracts for old guys. Also, this years cap is near-static, and next year figures to either go down or at best, be near-static again. This severely diminishes the cap room available, especially for the big (and often dumb) spenders, so he’d have fewer options. Those factors combined would lead me to think you could extend him for the same or even maybe a little less, assuming he’s all happy (and his wife is happy) in ANA. That would just be the big question, is if he’d be interested in staying. I would’ve gone for that. He’s too good a piece to lose, in my opinion.

I don’t think there was much choice in this matter. Assuming that Niedermayer does actually re-sign with the Ducks (at least that what his intentions are) and the fact that I really I have a hard time believing that Giguere will waive his no-trade clause, the Ducks could really only trade Pronger (or a Getzlaf or Perry which would be even worse).
And we did get a pretty good return, even if it was Lupul. I think Murray is a bit desperate to get some secondary scoring so someone like Lupul appeared pretty attractive to him.
Lupul>Corey Perry?

I think the two are comperable. We never had a chance to watch Lupul with Getz, but he was good. He scored all 4 goals in a 4-0 win against COL in the playoffs.
We should also keep in mind that Lupul’s career bests are still with Anaheim in 05-06 season with 28-25-53.
If he isn’t moved again (which actually wouldn’t surprise me if it did happen), I wonder where he’ll play. Will he be able to play on the left side where the Ducks need it. Unless Selanne doesn’t return, I think Lupul will have to try to play LW.
With Pronger on Philly, those will be low picks (just like ours to Edmonton) but I can live with that.

WOW!
The reaction at the Bell Centre when the Pronger trade was announced was a mix of stunned disbelief and then embarrassed laughter. Whatever Philly is smoking, I want some. The poor Flyers fan I was with was pretty inconsolable. No amount of beer and poutine was going to cheer her up.
And Burke’s reaction was PRICELESS! That guy’s head was about to explode. He was still seething when he had to get up and announce his back-up choice. And man, the crowd just gave it to him more. It was like he was fed by their hate. I half expected him to yell into the mic “BRING IT BITCHES!”
Wow. What a day! I still can’t believe I almost didn’t come to this!
