I’m not sure it’s a ton of things.
a) Sign Saku Koivu, if he’s willing to co-retire along Selanne cheaply. If not, play it cool with the marketplace. Basic needs are one NHL forward and one NHL defenseman.
b) Re-sign the Wiz, hopefully before arbitration.
c) Trade Giguere if possible, then re-evaluate part (a).
Ducks are hampered by the fact that they are going to be very low-spending next year. Mirtle’s post implies that they’ll have the fifth-lowest budget in the league next year, and if that’s really the case, the Ducks are going to have a mostly quiet summer.
Not the end of the world, though. There’s still plenty of cheap players on the roster — a half-dozen forwards (Nokelainen, Christensen, Carter, Brown, Miller, Ebbett) are making less than George Parros, for example.

Giguere
Has to be traded without throw away salary coming back. That will be the trick.

Well, not necessarily. If the Ducks traded a $6M Giguere for a $6M forward, for example, even if both were mutually “overpaid”, Murray may want to take that deal — an overpaid player on the ice still beats one who spends games on the bench.
But we’ll see — it may not even be possible to make any deals in this environment where a lot of teams are looking to shed.

Report from the cupboard
No one’s particularly ready to put in 25 games as a backup. We should get a 2M or less goalie in a Giguere move.

Either that or I’m sure there’s a few goaltenders sitting around without a contract. I wouldn’t worry too much about the ability to fill the open slot — I don’t know if you need to make a Giguere trade with only that in mind, anyway.

I’m not really wild about the netminders floating around. But I meant more that it doesn’t have to be a pure salary dump. We should be willing to take a cheap starter or expensive backup to help get a deal done. We could really use it.

Damn
I thought they would resign him, especially if that was the range they were looking for. I guess I still hope they sign Saku Koivu. Otherwise, there are some holes to fill…

I like that. A lot.

Yeah, it’s a nickname that I never really experimented with when I was rooting for the guy, but now that he’s out the door I might give it a try.

From an earlier post
I don’t believe this is as true as it was two years ago with Frenchie, but here’s what I wrote about him back after Scott Niedermayer’s half-retired season.
Normally, when a puck gets dumped behind two defensemen, it’s likely a 50-50 split which defenseman will go retrieve the puck, depending on what side of the net the puck is directed. For Scott and Frenchie, though, they’ve developed something like a 80-20 split, where Beauchemin gets only the very close dump-ins and expects his fleet-footed partner to gather the rest. I remember watching a Scott-less Beauchemin very carefully in the opening 34 games, and to my eyes I could spot this happening to poor spoiled Frenchie — he was so used to not retrieving pucks that he’d often leave his defensive partner with silly responsibilities that only a guy like Niedermayer could make look effortless….
Someday Frenchie is going to have to re-learn his puck responsibilities when paired with an average partner, but I don’t want it to happen this year.

i wont miss him getting caught flat footed while a forward skating right by him..
but i wil always fondly remember the ignila beat down
maybe thats why i hearted him so much…which in the end was only great eye candy..
he had a great shot and seemed like to be a big time threat on the PP…but that faded away

That graphic reminds me of Brendan Witt’s zone coverage this past season.

the only problem is..usually teams with this much turnover take time re-calibrate..
in this case the d…might be swimming back there trying to defend..
i got real pessimistic all the sudden

We shall see — one thing that’s true about most of Anaheim’s current defensemen is that I’ve watched them play for less than a full season. So I’m certainly open to surprises there.

I'm worried
We lost 2 of our top 3 D-men, and we still haven’t re-signed Wiz. Yeah, we got one back for Pronger(who knows how good he is though), but do we have any in development who are ready to step up(I really have no idea, hope someone does).
Insanity is just a state of mind.

I never know about our prospects until they hit NHL ice — it’s what makes me a terrible blogger. But we did get to see some play out of Uncle Festerling (which I found very encouraging), B-Mikkelson (somewhat encouraging), and Salcido last year (Salcido I believe played only two games, but zero goals-against!). I wouldn’t count on all three being ready for regular NHL action, but among the three, I have to think one of them will be ready for something.
Plus there’s guys like Mitera whom I’ve never seen play — should be interesting, though. Only Scott do I feel like I have a solid handle on, though — even Whitney, Wisniewski, and Brookbank I only had partial-season looks. And I wouldn’t recognize Sbisa if he walked across the room and cross-checked me in the back.
So yeah, we shall see.

Mitera didn’t see much action for the wolverines coming back from his knee injury last year, but he’s a solid defensive defenseman. If we call him up, it’s 1.275. Bickel’s a hitter who had a nagging injury last year. If we call him up, it’s 1.375. Everyone else can’t really unseat Mikk/Fest/Salcido. All five should get mixed-in at camp and the preseason. Golden opportunity for someone.
Or maybe Rick Paterson will go out and track down a Montador, Brookbank or McIver like he did this year.

I put a quick write-up together for PPP
It was hasty and informal — feel free to add to it or dispute it at your leisure.
Holy shit, you guys have 391 comments on Beauchemin? That’s more than I had over his 4 years as a Duck :)
Mostly, I refer to Beauchemin as “Frenchie”, even though I’ve heard he despises that name — I’m sort of a jerk about stuff like that. He’s been fantastic for the Ducks, of course, but for a lot of his Anaheim tenure it was with Scotty Niedermayer at his back, which enhanced his abilities somewhat. I estimate that over the course of his Anaheim career, Frenchie had to go back and retrieve 1,000 fewer pucks than he would have had to with a normal-speed defensive partner, and it is worth noting that Beauchemin’s scoring rates during Niedermayer’s “retirement” were terrible. Also is the matter of Frenchie’s historical salary — he was the steal of the century at half-a-million bucks when Burke got him in the Fedorov trade, and even at his next conract, $1.65M was a steal.
I’m not exactly sure how he’ll fare in Toronto’s system — really, it’s tough to translate how he did on a Niedermayer-and-Pronger blueline to how he’ll do on a blueline without either. But as a depth guy (2nd pairing, 2nd PP, 2nd PK) with somebody watching his back — Frenchie is fantastic. He can shoot decently, hit just fine — other than possibly footspeed, there’s no glaring weakness in his game. He’s tough, too (only misssed one game when he broke his jaw in the ‘07 playoffs, and like Forsberg, is playing without a spleen).
And I’ll let you in on a little secret. You may hardly ever get to see it, but Frenchie is quite a surprisingly awesome fighter. He normally leaves that stuff to his teammates, but on the odd occasion when he does drop the gloves, watch out. Nobody seems prepared for how fast his punches land — in the 2006 playoffs, he pummelled Jarome Iginla, and Iggy wasn’t the same in the series afterwards. Last playoffs he broke Kopecky’s face, and Kopecky wasn’t even in the series after that.
The Ducks will certainly miss Beauchemin’s minutes — he ate a ton of them — but we’re tightening our belts, and Frenchie is certainly welcome to earn his raise elsewhere. You guys will probably enjoy him (unless you’re a Francophobe), but I do have to note that in less than the span of a season, Toronto has nabbed Brian Burke, Dave Nonis, Francois Allaire, Brad May, and Francois Beauchemin from the Ducks.
When can we start talking about that inevitable J.S. Giguere trade? :)
