Anaheim Ducks' VERSUS schedule released for 2009-10!
From Steve Lepore's Twitter account:
VERSUS will only air 2 games from a location West of Texas all season.
Awesome. Fuck off, Versus.

Hmm, apparently the Carolina Hurricanes also got shut out from the VS schedule, and they’ve probably got a bigger beef — they do play in the eastern time zone.
I guess winning postlockout Stanley Cups and being upset-series-winners in the most recent postseason doesn’t get as much national recognition as you might expect.

The Atlanta Thrashers got shut out as well as the Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, and Vancouver Canucks. Besides the Blackhawks and Red Wings, the Western Conference only consists of a third of the total teams being shown on VERSUS. Is there any truth to that East Coast bias?

Yeah, it’s definitely lame — the Kings and the Ducks will now be in a stretch of being shown once on VS over a two-season stretch. The Sharks get a few more, but even that’s disproportionately low for their record of success.
Six teams have made the Stanley Cup Finals since the lockout — VS will show but two of them.
Eight teams survived the first round of the postseason last spring — VS will show but five of them.
Bleh, well at least I won’t have to find the channel on my TV for many months — cheers, I guess, to that.

Well, maybe not — if Hayward does spot duty on Versus, it could pull him away from the Ducks’ broadcasts.
But Brent Severyn is gone from the radio — I wonder who would fill in. Rob Niedermayer?

On Severyn: I saw a short story about it in the OC Register earlier this summer. It was something “mutual” about Severyn actually residing in St. Louis or some other nonsense city, and the radio station not being terribly excited to re-up him anyways.

Oh well I meant RoNidz… (made that up out of nowhere)
Severyn was pretty good, but I particularly like the radio play-by-play guy so I’m glad he’s still there

Definitely expected just a blank screen, but you upped the ante with a snarky filter. Well played.
Guess I have no choice but to order Center Ice next year…

That is really unfortunate. I don’t blame them for not including Edmonton, Carolina, and Atlanta, but not including Vancouver or Anaheim is just stupid. “Gee, these teams are going to contend for divisional crowns, lets make sure no one knows they exist!”
While it will always seem stupid to me that the Wings play in the Western Conference, I think its easy to imagine that the loss of Detroit from the Western Conference would lead to a schedule almost completely avoiding the West. Detroit’s being in the Western Conference is the only reason why half the teams in the West even get on VS. Now that Chicago doesn’t suck, they can also help in that regard, but still, its pretty ridiculous.
Ya know, I wonder if it wouldn’t be a good idea to do something similar to how CBS/Fox split the AFC/NFC for the NFL, and let the NHL split the East/West between VS and another network. I’m so tired of VS only showing one game a night on Mon and Tues, when I can’t watch TV. I probably end up watching the least hockey of anyone here. I’d imagine it would be a complicated issue, as the Eastern Conference contract would probably be much more lucrative, but damn it would be nice.

What’s funny is that if a re-divisioning occurred due to a Hamilton team, who the hell ELSE would come west? And as the Ducks TV guys put it, considering the number of tough teams there, who the hell would want to?

There are two Wednesday night games on the schedule too, November 25th and December 9th.

Well, if the Hamilton team actually belongs to Balsillie, I think the team stays in whatever division it was in before he moved it, at least for a while. If he gets a judge to pave the way for him to join the NHL, the NHL is going to be in no hurry whatsoever to do him even the slightest favor for several years. And really, I think Balsillie is probably fine with that, as he would at least be sitting at the table. He can always get a more comfortable seat later.

Yeah, but the way they’re running this now, I’d totally support it. And it’s not like VS would even have to do anything — there’s certainly plenty left to choose from in VS’s leftover pile (read: Wed – Sun). It could become completely additive money.
Well, whatever — we know that the NHL on VS has a terrible terrible sense of sanity — that’s not new. So whatever. Maybe I’ll support that channel sometime in the future. This year is solidly “Fuck those idiots”, though.
