What Would You Offer for Ilya Kovalchuk

I don't talk much about the Kings potentially acquiring for 3 reasons:

1) It's not likely to happen

2) I feel bad lusting over a player while he's still betrothed to a different fanbase

3) The idea of Ilya in a Kings uniform gets me all hot and I start hyperventilating.  Seriously, the last time I got this nervous and excited about an event was the time I lost my virginity.  No sorry, it was when The Dark Knight came out.  Before that was losing my virginity and before that was a Backstreet Boys concert back in '01 (where just a few hours later I lost my virginity).

That being said, those poor, poor Atlanta fans are starting to come to grips with the fact that they're going to lose Ilya to someone and they're wondering what the likely return will be.  I wanted to see what fellow Kings fans would like offer while also offering my own potential trade package:

Kings get: Ilya Kovalchuk

Thrashers get: Jack Johnson, Colten Teubert, 1st round pick in 2010, conditional pick in 2011 if Ilya signs

I figure it lines up closely to the Chris Pronger trade: a jackass roster player, a defenseman prospect, a 1st rounder, and another 1st rounder if Ilya signs.  It's not a lot to give up but I doubt many people are rushing to give up half their team for a guy that's unsigned past this year.  Plus, I can't really masturbate to the Kings' future if I offer up a lot.  Watch: the Kings with a core of Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, Kovalchuk, Dustin Brown, and Jonathan Quick/Bernier, with Schenn, Hickey, Voynov, Moller and Loktionov waiting in the wings. Mmmm...

What do you think?

Seems like a reasonable enough package, but who really knows?

I don’t think the Ducks should be bidding at all — next summer’s focus for Barstool Bob should be (1) B-Ryan, (2) Jonas Hiller, and maybe (3) Koivu. No need to complicate that with a mountain of salary for Kovalchuk — Ducks need a d-man more than a scoring winger anyways.

But I could definitely see some possibilities for L.A. — intriguing.

Just for fun, though

Lupul (why not?), Sexton and a 1st Round pick.

Trade right now and we’ll throw in one free Ryan Whitney!

Don’t like it? Send it back within 30 days for a full Ilya-back guarantee, but keep the Whitney as a free gift from us!

I don’t think the Thrashers are going to get anywhere near that good of a package. Their GM isn’t exactly a genius.

Yeah, but there are a lot GMs out there who aren’t exactly geniuses, especially when it comes to the trade deadline. Those guys are, in all likelihood, going to start bidding against one another, and all Waddell has to do is pick what he thinks is the best offer (which may not be, but should still be pretty solid).

I would love to get Kovi, but without the guarantee that he re-signs, it’s not worth it.

I would guess it’s going to take a combination of at least one top prospect , a high draft pick and a middling NHL ready player.

by RealDrew on Jan 11, 2010 10:24 PM PST reply actions

well, it would be a wonderful world if that's all it took to get him

I keep thinking Brown and Johnson. But if you think just Johnson and some other garnishes, why not just give them Brown and keep Johnson. Trade captains. I don’t have a clue what I’m talking about, but I put the chances of IK getting dealt at about 2:1, and the chance of him coming to the Kings at about 1:4. Does Waddell want to send the guy to a rival in the East? I think IK will be shipped West, to either Detroit, San Jose, Anaheim, Vancouver, Calgary or Chicago. Or Nashville. Oh, or the Kings. I hope Lombardi worries about IK in a San Jose or Anaheim jersey enough to make a pre-emptive first strike.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jan 12, 2010 12:17 AM PST reply actions

Rosterbation is great isn't it?

Seriously though, how does Vancouver have any room to fit IK in there? Especially considering they have nothing to give away.

The Kings make sense in this deal on so many levels it makes me wet, and I’m a dude. They have like a billion draft picks in the next two years and lots of prospects that could conceivably take the roles of existing roster players. That means you have three relatively large groups of assets for ATL to choose from. Combine that with them being a Western team and I can’t see the Thrash looking at what the Kings can offer and deciding to go to a different team.

That said, Deano has to offer the good package. Atlanta has a ton of holes next year. They only have 11 guys under contract for 10/11 including ZERO goalies. They also badly need a C after Antropov. Why not toss them a choice of Stoll, Teubert and a couple of picks? Sure Stoll is a great asset but he would be very valuable to a team like them. I feel like Handzus can pick up his slack and Moller could move up to the 3rd line?

I dunno, I have no idea what I’m doing either.

Yeah, I was thinking of Jones too.

I don’t know though. Who knows what Waddell even wants?

by 88fingerslukee on Jan 12, 2010 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

Stoll, Teubert and picks

Me, I would rather it be Brown instead of Stoll, but I know i’m in the minority on that (and I was down on Stoll at the beginning of the year, til he was jump-started by Parse, so in that sense I’m a hypocrite). I agree they would like Stoll and could use him. To run with your package, I would counter with:

Stoll, Teubert, Jones.

I’m kind of annoyed that we didn’t take Myers and traded down for Teubert instead.

Wait till this year.

Just to approach this from the other end, though…who do you think would most likely be on Atlanta’s wish list?

Dudes just win already

by Niesy on Jan 12, 2010 7:40 AM PST up reply actions

Atlanta's wishlist

Kopitar
Brown
Simmonds
Johnson
Stoll
Bernier
Schenn
Loktionov
Moller
Clifford
Frolov
Voynov
Hickey
Teubert
Jones

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jan 13, 2010 2:26 PM PST up reply actions

That sounds reasonable. Do it, Lombardi! :)

Yeah, that would solve any cap issues.

by Quisp on Jan 13, 2010 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

and yes, i would consider dealing kopitar

but i think ATL is over a barrel a bit and the price will not be anywhere near that high.

but just for fun, how about:

Kopitar and Frolov for Kovalchuk and Antropov

or, even better:

Kopitar, Frolov, Brown and Jones for Kovalchuk, Antropov and Bogosian

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jan 13, 2010 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

I would do a Kopi trade too, actually. One superstar in hand worth a maybe proto-superstar in the bush, or something.

by Niesy on Jan 13, 2010 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

I’m guessing that’s not in order. I think it would be Doughty (never), Kopitar, Schenn, Bernier (all untouchable unless he signs a contract), Johnson, Brown, Simmonds, Moller, Voinov, Loktionov, Stoll, Frolov, Hickey, Tuebert, Clifford, Jones

by Nut on Jan 13, 2010 4:24 PM PST up reply actions

That is excellent, thank you.

I can’t believe people are throwing around Bernier’s name in earnest, though. Atlanta needs goaltending, sure — but we don’t? Hmph.

I’m also with you re: dealing Brown. I don’t think he’s irreplaceable, and frankly — and this is no knock on him or how much he tries — I’d rather see some tough old veteran who has seen the top of the mountain be this team’s leader right now.

Also, I’m biased, but I keep crossing my fingers and saying NOT HICKEY. I get too attached. Sniff.

Shuckton 2028!

by Niesy on Jan 13, 2010 6:40 PM PST up reply actions

the question was, who is on ATL's wish list

not “who would the kings deal?”

i left doughty off because it’s too outrageous even for a list such as this. exponentially crazier than kopitar.

nut -

I think Clifford is higher on everyone’s list, but your order is pretty good. i was basically (and quickly) trying to throw together a list in descending order from ATL’s point of view. I left doughty off but he would go at the top.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jan 13, 2010 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

Oh! Sorry. I wasn’t criticizing your wishlist. I was referring to people who offer that up in the realm of actual possibility. I should have made that clear — my bad.

Then again, does anyone take Buccigross seriously at this point? I get the feeling that all of his columns are “Blah blah blah phone it in.” Oh yeah, it’s the internet, they probably do.

I do think the package would include a first rounder and a young defenseman (Teubert does make the most sense for the Thrashers), but I would suspect that Atlanta would want a young scoring winger to offset the loss up front. They’ll eventually move Lehtonen and they’ll need another goalie prospect once Pavelic takes the number one spot. I could see a deal of the following:

Teubert
Moller
Jones (or Zatkoff)
1st round pick in ’10
1st round pick in ’11 (if signed)

by Irish Pat on Jan 12, 2010 12:21 PM PST reply actions

but I would suspect that Atlanta would want a young scoring winger to offset the loss up front.

Right, because the last thing ATL needs is to be a 10-15th place eastern conference team in the absense of Ilya….. oh wait…..nevermind.

by Mike in OC on Jan 12, 2010 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

not enough salary going back to atl

so you would have to expect more deals either before the deadline or (more likely) in june, in order to clear space for the kovi contract. And I will keep Moller.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jan 13, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Nice post Mr. Kelly. Make it Brayden Schenn, a 1st, and Jack Johnson and we might have deal. In my imaginary hockey universe, I mean, not the real one.

As a Thrashers fan, I have to say that the only team I could halfway live with Kovy going to is the L.A. Kings. Godspeed.

by MortimerPeacock on Jan 12, 2010 12:27 PM PST reply actions

I don't think ATL would accept that deal and I know the Kings wouldn't offer it

but i’m glad to see that so many people expect and/or want the kings to be the receivers of kovalchuk.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jan 13, 2010 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

As a Sharks fan, I do hope LA is where Kovalchuk is headed. It would be nice to watch him live on a regular basis in a normal time zone.

That is, unless we meet in playoffs.

by Ivano M on Jan 12, 2010 12:32 PM PST reply actions

UFA for UFA

Frolov would be a nice place to start, UFA for UFA. Johnson I would like to keep but if necessary, sure thing. Give them Teubert if that’s what they want. First-round picks I’m not sure about, but it makes sense to make any such picks conditional on Kovi signing…

So for example Frolov + some young defenseman + a pick or two (any picks conditional on Kovi signing).

Either way, I have faith in Lombardi not trading away too much without making sure we get something out of it in the end. We’ll see what happens, I can’t see him doing a trade at all if it costs too much…

by Starlight Blues on Jan 12, 2010 3:00 PM PST reply actions

1st round pick in 2010

It just occurred to me, with the 2010 draft being held in L.A., isn’t Lombardi kind of obligated to hold onto his pick? It seems it’d be a weird event if the hosting team didn’t participate in day one.

http://www.battleofcali.com/

by Earl Sleek on Jan 13, 2010 5:10 PM PST reply actions

people say that, yes,

DL sorta “has to” hold onto his 1st round pick. I’ll bet he doesn’t see it that way. One could also argue that the Kings should finish in the bottom ten, in order to have a really good pick. it would be weird, but a lot less weird if Kovalchuk shows up to sign naked breasts and so forth. But I really think roster players will be a bigger part of the deal, and anyway DL can trade the 2011 #1 pick, and keep the 2010 one.

Kopitar and Frolov for Kovalchuk and the giant russian center. and then kovi signs and fro doesn’t and we re-sign him in the summer. suckers!

Wait till this year.
