Least Valuable Players
I won't link to the original source and pretend I didn't read this through Puck Daddy like everyone else, but here is a list of the least valuable players in the NHL. There are issues with the way they determine the rankings, but it's spot on for a good number of the players.
BoC players in the bottom 15 in terms of value for salary:
ANA: Jason Blake, Aaron Ward, Andy Sutton
SJS: Niclas Wallin (God yes. And where's Huskins?)
LAK: None! And Quick is the MOST valuable goalie for the money in the league.
I may have missed some new acquisitions since they only list the team they played for last season. Let me know in the comments.
Also interesting: the Sharks come in second to the Coyotes in something called "Fan Value Ranking." I can't be bothered to figure out what that is, but yay!

Looks like we have a few Kings nearly missing the top 5 in their position but a bit tougher to understand.
Smyth makes the list as the #6 least valuable LW (makes sense with his $6.25M cap hit).
Stoll makes the list as the #6 least valuable C (a bit harder to believe but I do agree he’s a bit overpaid at $3.5M and maybe a bit underachieving on the stat sheet).
Simmonds makes the list as the #6 least valuable RW (unbelievably ridiculous with his 850k cap hit,+22 +/-, constant hustle, and never ending list of contributions)
Yeah, this list is flawed.
And even then, looks like they’re using last year’s salary, which means this list is only useful a year ago. And it focuses on cap hit, which means this list is only useful a year ago to a handful of ceiling-spending teams.
And why keep Aaron Ward on the list? Scared his retirement announcement was a sham?
Shitty, shitty methodology throughout.

but it’s spot on for a good number of the players.
Who exactly would you say is spot-on?
I don’t even think the term “value” should apply here — a player’s value exists outside of his price tag. This should be called “bargain” analysis, and even then it stinks.

Wallin is spot on of course. He’s not good in terms of value or bargain.
I think there is something to be looked at here in terms of quality of player compared to others who are paid the same amount. It’s difficult to include intangibles in that analysis though, so for some players it might not work.

Danny briere is another good one. And Marty Turco.

Sure, and it’s going to hit on some obvious ones with the biggest salary — it’s not a faulty first thought, but I don’t think it’s a good published study.
And it’s going to reflect a lot of market realities — gasp, UFAs do cost more than first contracts — I would prefer to see that separated, as I don’t think anybody should be suggesting the way to win in the NHL is to not sign UFAs.
They probably ought to do more to cover their asses on things like Vanek, too.

Briere is money in the playoffs. He was the leading in points no? There is more to life than the regular season.
I rec’d that shit.
something called “Fan Value Ranking.”
The formula is basically the cost of tickets, drinks, parking, and food compared to how much your team doesn’t suck. Kings are on there, too, at #6. Woo.
The cost of being a fan in Canada is, of course, very high. Poor Toronto, so expensive and yet so awful.

OMG ROOOFFLLLL
You guys HAVE to watch this video on CSN about the Sharks heading to europe. Watch just a bit after 25 seconds into the video…

Yes, i think that’s Niclas Wallin curled up on Douglass Murrays lap while giggling and twisting his nipples…LOL
What the hell was that about?

The best part is
that Wallin seems to be the only one enjoying it and Doug Murray looks like he’s just saying “What are you doing? Get off of me!”
This is like Patrick Marleau Fact status.

Oh and for a hilarious video of Marleau trying NOT to be awkward
but making himself look even more awkward…

Irrelevant, but this is the team I’m going to use to win the FTF fantasy league. Poor suckers believed in the Ducks’ preseason suckiness — it was all a gimmick to lower their draft values.

I didn’t grab any Sharks, but in that league it’s tough to do. Joe Pavelski went 3rd overall.

Wow you got BOTH Kings goalies? Nice.

Both Kings goalies, both Ducks hotheads, and both Hall and Seguin, too. You might not be able to tell that this too is a 16-team league.

Agreed. And not just the goaltending, though. That whole damn squad is impressive. Nicely done, Sleek!

There was definitely a point in the later rounds where I had to purposely not draft any more Ducks — this league doesn’t have any W, F, or Util spots so overkilling in any position with too many teammates is useless.
In other words, sorry, Saku. :)
