Only twice in 8 games have the Ducks been able to limit opponents to fewer than 40 shots in a game, and zero times in 8 games have the Ducks generated 30 shots in a game. Exactly half the games have seen the Ducks outshot by exactly 22 shots.
Randy, please explain for us slow-heads: why should I not be worried about this?
Prediction: I've got some family thing this afternoon, so I'll likely miss the start of the game, but I'll try to join in midway through. Ducks get severely outshot, but maybe win?
Go Ducks.

It’s bound to be better than Game One — and now they’ve used up the “Oh yeah, season” excuse within the past 24 hours. There’s like a 75% chance of improvement!

candy!!!

Remember kids it's down the road not across the street
I did buy an overly excessive bag of candy for this Halloween — actually, any candy I buy is probably excessive, as I got zero trick-or-treaters last year.
More for me!

yay! candy is awesome. and i’m telling myself it’s kinda healthier to eat candy when hockey sucks than drinking alcohol…

For the numbers-minded, thus far the Ducks have been outshot by 93 shots and outscored by 9 goals at even strength, and outshot by 31 shots and outscored by 3 goals on special teams.
This isn’t even really a “we take too many penalties” problem of the past. Though that clearly hasn’t gone away, either.

hey think positive
1. fowler is probally the real deal
2. our pk i guess is improved?…the wings might not have cared to score..but fuck it
3. perry hasnt lost his touch to piss people off and entertain us
4. and thats about it
the negatives list is too long to write

Yeah, the questions for Carlyle are really “What does your system look like when it works?” and “Can we see it at any point this year?”
So far, can’t answer either of those.

You post this like you’re surprised. This seems about right.
Here’s to alcohol: the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.
I’m surprised that a group of athletes that have been through a professional training camp and practices can consistently yield results this bad.
These are numbers I would expect from 20 athletes meeting each other for the first time.
www.battleofcali.com
How did those numbers look for the Leafs and Oilers last year? Maybe they can shed some light on why this is happening. :)
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
Don’t have preseason numbers, but the Oilers allowed 40+ shots in 14 of their 82 games. The Leafs, if you can believe it, only allowed 40+ shots in 2 of their 82 games.
They had different issues — Oilers could be similar, but the Leafs had awful goaltending — they spent a lot of time trailing and thus teams had disincentive to drive up the shot tally.
www.battleofcali.com
And? This team feels sort of thrown together to me, so maybe that’s why I’m not surprised that’s how they play.
Here’s to alcohol: the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.
Also, it is worth mentioning that the forward lineup is almost identical to the lineup that the Ducks ended last season with — the blueline has undergone almost the entirety of the makeover.
Still isn’t a lot of evidence that the forwards know what they are doing, either.
www.battleofcali.com
they kinda had that preseason nonchalant attitude last night.
GO DUCKS!!!

After the game was 2-0 and especially 3-0, so did everybody. Games aren’t very meaningful past a certain point of futility, and Ducks seem to find that pretty fast some games.
www.battleofcali.com
It’s funny though (in a complete non funny kind of way), how in the past when the tables are turned and the Ducks find themselves on the GOOD END of a 3-0 game…the other team tends not to play into that attitude, they turn it up instead.
I don’t like that so much.

prototype. He and airxess are trying out new materials and designs again. It’s his MO now. Go into the season with a prototype, perfect it, get it painted at the end of the season, scrap it in the offseason, repeat.

why should I not be worried about this?
In the pregame comments before the Detroit game, I think Carlyle explained away the shot differential by talking about penalty trouble. Convenient excuse when coaching this team, but it would be nice if he took the question seriously
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Oct 9, 2010 2:42 PM PDT reply actions
It’s still a 93 shot differential at even strength and counting.

Hahaha — Derek Stepan (NYR rookie) has had a hat trick in his first NHL game. And as the team heads off the bench at the end of the 2nd, Dubinsky gave him a peck! ???
But the kiss!! I’ve rewound and rewatched it like 3 times, and I can’t tell if he kissed him on the visor or actually on the face. Dubinsky was interviewed right after, and the interviewer asked him about it, but he dodged the question. Aww, sweet?
im sure they settled it in the shower

Top line should be embarrassed, but it’s no real surprise the only line doing anything features our two hardest-working forwards. And Selanne’s showing some jump, too.
www.battleofcali.com
I can see it now: Selanne, disgusted with the team’s performance, retires. On the exact same day, Niedermayer, disgusted with the team’s performance, un-retires.

Wait (hic), if, hypothetically, you had Rinne on your fantasy team, and he left the game while leading, and if the Preds (hic) hang on to win, does Rinne get the win?
Assuming it never gets tied (and sure, let’s pretend that’s up for grabs), then yeah, Rinne gets the win.

Heh, and then when you get sick of coke, you can try Jack-Two-Oh, or the ol’ Jack-and-Water.

Half a comeback period squandered — true to form, Ducks are getting outshot in their alleged “comeback” scheme.
But this is the first time all season and preseason that the Ducks have taken 30 shots on goal. If it weren’t so overall depressing, I’d celebrate.
www.battleofcali.com
I hope Jonas Hiller somehow gets blamed for this loss, too. C’mon, Jonas! We scored you a whole goal over 5 1/2 periods, make it stand up, jerk!
www.battleofcali.com
Hey, but I guess it could be worse. The 1999-00 Ducks scored zero goals over their first two games. Good thing we’re not those suckers.
www.battleofcali.com
Fantasy tip: Play all your St. Louis Blues on Monday.
Then in the third period, when the game is out of reach, play your Ducks for the useless penalty minutes.
www.battleofcali.com
But are those PIMs worth the hit you’ll take in +/- ? That is the question.
Also, I hate myself for this, but I’m hoping the Kings light Luongo up tonight. I’m loving both teams’ retro jerseys.
Through nine games, now, the shot discrepancy grows to 136. Opponents 357, Ducks 221. Goals are Opponents 36, Ducks 21.
Randy?

Well… you were half-right.
49-37? The 19 shots the Ducks got in the second period were good, but they allowed 12 and gave up three goals, as well…
You’re almost never going when you’re giving up near 50 goals, and the Predators showed us last night what we all knew: the Ducks defense is much weaker now than they were when they had Pronger, Niedermayer, Beauchemin…
Denis Gauthier sucks at hockey... and life.
