Wait, you know about the postseason? :)

Shrug — so Thornton made the postseason more often during the peak of his career. That .68 postseason pts-per-game would still be the tops in the current Kings locker room.

And equally as important — Selanne’s points-per-game improve to 1.13 in the regular season and 0.75 if you just stick to the games played in a Ducks sweater.

Not our fault he doesn’t like scoring for other franchises (cough, San Jose, cough).

It’s because he was the #1 option on the Sharks, so he didn’t have any good scoring chances. Its not like he missed an open net in a pivotal playoff game or anything…

And I bet you Ducks fans didn’t even appreciate Friesen. sniff He was a good man!

by RudyKelly on Feb 9, 2010 2:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s because people actually like Teemu Selanne.

And Joe Thornton is ten years younger and has played more years in the playoffs at a younger age then Selanne…

And Selanne has never had the expectations of Thornton (not a number one overall pick, not a hart trophy winner, etc…). Thornton has always been the number one guy on a team, while Selanne hasn’t.

So really, Selanne has performed as well as Joe Thornton and he’s not even the team’s top player…

Yeah, what I’m missing here is whom exactly Rudy thought he was aiming this post at. No one was picking on Joe here, so we automatically assume he’s just being a splooge.

As for the Sharks collectively choking, well, that’s another matter entirely.

I dunno, I would think scoring 76 goals in your rookie season would set some pretty high expectations for the rest of your career.

True enough, but the larger point is that 80% of Selanne’s playoff career came when he was older than Joe Thornton is now — that skews the comparison enough.

I still think that his expectations are not as great as Joe Thornton’s are. The NHL isn’t the same as it was back then when Selanne scored 76 goals. I don’t think someone like Ovechkin will ever score 76 goals without some serious changes taking place in the league.

Plus… with no intention to offend anyone, Joe Thornton is Canadian. His expectations are greater just because of that.

No, you’re right there — if Thornton had anywhere near the smile power of a Teemu Selanne, I’m sure he’d get a lot more slack; he is over-scrutinized and under-analyzed.

But pick on the Finn at your peril — he’ll certainly have his defenders.

I was going to mention something about how much Selanne smiles by trying to put down an average number of smiles per game… but I’d just be pulling a number out of my ass at that point.

But I guess nothing’s wrong with that on BOC. So here it is.
Selanne – Avg. number of smiles per game – 26

Ang is correct (I think) It really has more to do with the team’s failures in the playoffs then Thortons, don’t you think if Thorton was on Detroit, even with those numbers, nobody dares mentions he disapears in the playoffs?

If you think about it, Thorton is just taking Marleaus place, we used to say all this shit about him before.

I do not see the Ducks in the playoffs this year. Mainly because I do see the Kings there, it would be hard for them not to make it, and the two teams are not supposed to both make the playoffs in the same year.

So despite what I have had to endure with Kings fans in years past, I will root for LA to upset SJ in the playoffs this season. I’m on the record.

I never did understand the hatred geared towards Ducks fans just because they are fans on Anheim. LA has the bigger fan base, they deserve it, they have been here longer, but we are all bretheren. We all love hockey with a passion and laugh at basketball.

I secretly hope Anaheim sends Scott to LA if they send him anywhere this trade deadline. I know it would probably take away the only trump card we have over LA (the fact we have a cup), but I can not help it.

If the Ducks ceased to exist, I’d be a Kings fan pretty fast, I think.

I don’t know man, my Dad might disown me if I don’t default to Buffalo instead. Kings would be geographically convenient though. And as far as players go, the Kings have an insanely talented and young team. Kings fans have a lot to look forward to.

If both the Kings and Ducks ceased to exist, though, I might give up on hockey before seeing how I look in teal.

Yeah. I have friends that are Sharks fans and I still just couldn’t do it.

That’s comendable. I would still follow the team the Ducks turned in to, I might even go that route and become a fan or continue to be a fan, depending on how you look at it. It’s horrible to move any team. I wouldn’t wish that on any franchise. Not even the Sharks….. Maybe the Red Wings, but not the Sharks. Would it be looked down upon to follow another team if your team shipped elsewhere? I wouldn’t think so.

i think most ducks fans share my story…werent hockey fans at all until the ducks came to town..with hockey not a sport thats forced into you at any school level…always basketball football baseball…lot of people werent exposed to it unless you had cable and for whatever reason..parent where fans or u just got curious and watched a kings game…

so when the ducks came…They came with a lot of hoopla…the promoted there coming well..some fans got interested cuz of the mighty ducks movie…some just thought I don’t know shit about hockey…I don’t know shit about the kings….lets learn about hockey and we can grow with this team etc…I think I speak for a lot of fans…but who knows

rec’d. Spot on.

except for the scotty trade.

by tu madre on Feb 10, 2010 9:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve always been a Ducks fan since they started in 93. I did root for LA in 92-93 when they made the SCF. Basically that’s when I found out hockey exisited, but never became a fan until I watched my first game in person in 93 at the pond.

I can love UCLA and still hope USC does good if UCLA is not in the game. The ONLY time I question that is when USC or Kings fans talk shit.

I have played on the same hockey team in the same division for the last 3 years (I know I suck, but at least I’m playing) and at some point all the guys I face have ended up as my teammates. I just find it hard to hate the shit out of a team so much that I insult the fans, players, and hold grudges forever for anything associated to that team. It’s just a sport, and the fact that we all love hockey puts us all in a very small select group of people, so we have stuff in common.

On the Scotty trade, I really think if we want to see Anaheim challenge the Pacific Division, we need to get some assets quick. Scotty is one way to do that fairly quickly.

by Mike in OC on Feb 10, 2010 2:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Meh, at least a Scotty trade wouldn’t last too long, if it did happen with LA or anywhere, really, and we’d hopefully get something fair in return.

That is, unless my old NHL 09 franchise was right and he’ll still be playing in 2014.

Ohh! You guys!

by brokenyard on Feb 10, 2010 2:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I guess I have learned not to get to attached. I was bumbed out for a week when they lost Kariya, but at the end of the day I still love the team, and the players that comprise it are always changing. I have two sweaters, Kariya and Pronger, both players gone.

I don’t really get to bumbed anymore. I hated to see J.S. go, but I have watched two of his three games in Toronto and I now can sit through one of the three tripple headers on NHL network on Hockey Day. Bright side.

This year I really thought we would be better than we are, and I do not want to be a non-playoff team for an extended timeframe again. I would hate to see them waste Bobby and Getzlafs best years rebuilding. I do not expect Teemu, Koivu and Scott to be with us much longer and this year we witnessed we have a huge hole on defense.

Fuck it, lets use those guys to fill some holes. I quit thinking we have a playoff team when they lost to Atlanta. I think that’s realistic, but only time will tell. Obviously if we make the playoffs I want those guys, I just don’t see it.

by Mike in OC on Feb 10, 2010 2:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Once again Mike, great comment.
And I agree with trading any or all three of them to improve our team for the future, especially with the season going the way it is. Both Teemu and Scott will retire…….and soon I think. I’d like to think we can keep Koivu, but we will see.
It would be a sad day to see any of them go, but if we can get something out of them before they retire, it would be beneficial to the team in the long run.

It was o.k. that Jiggy went to Toronto (and I’m glad he’s doing well) because we wont see him that often. Scott going to L.A. would mean having to play against him (if he plays another season) and it would hurt if he played well against us. If we do trade him, put him back with his bro.

I never did understand the hatred geared towards Ducks fans just because they are fans on Anheim. LA has the bigger fan base, they deserve it, they have been here longer, but we are all bretheren. We all love hockey with a passion and laugh at basketball.

Hmm… I wonder why people don’t take Anaheim fans seriou-

I secretly hope Anaheim sends Scott to LA if they send him anywhere this trade deadline. I know it would probably take away the only trump card we have over LA (the fact we have a cup), but I can not help it.

by brokenyard on Feb 9, 2010 5:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Think about it, as I say IF they send him anywhere, i would prefer LA.

What are my choices:
CHI – Fuck Hossa
SJ – no way
PHILLY – they have Pronger allready so nope, Nieds & Pronger is our legacy.
NJ – no way
DET – hell no

That leaves pretty much LA or CGY that migh feel they could add Scott and maybe get a cup. I would rather see him in LA. It would be fun to watch him skate with Drew. Watching us miss the playoffs and then Scott packing it up does nothing for me.

I guess a couple east coast teams might be ok as well.

by Mike in OC on Feb 9, 2010 5:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i should add, I have allready watched Scott and Teemu retire once where we got nothing in return for them, this time i would not be opposed to some compesation as a team.

by Mike in OC on Feb 9, 2010 6:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s true, but I don’t know if the return was zero. I mean, those two guys have negotiated pretty exclusively with Anaheim since those fake retirements — that’s something.

But yeah, this go-round is different, a bit. Still, I have zero issue with Teemu retiring as a Duck, whenever he’s really ready to do it.

But speaking of Selanne

I know I make a lot of meaningless polls, but on the Ducks website:

Which recent development are you most excited about?

Hiller Extension – 35.46 %
Blake & Toskala Acquisition – 22.59 %
Selanne Back in Lineup – 41.95 %

Are you people serious? The thing that excites you most is “Uh, Selanne stopped eating pucks”
