holy shit … just read that on nhl.com and actually felt bad for the Kings fans who had to go thru that wait … what a bitch
sorry you guys.

I’m kind of pissed, too. Now instead of being very unworried about a Bobby Ryan offer sheet, I’m quite nervous now.

Bite your tongue, Sleek!
Where’s Arthur? I need a full analysis of Kings’ cap space verus Ducks, as it relates to Bobby.

Really, a spurned Kings team was the only one I was worried about, and Kovalchuk’s unwillingness to actually spurn them gave me some hope.
Still, it could turn out fine — if the Kings trade for Gagne or a Devils forward, then we’re probably in the clear once more.

IF (and that’s a BIG if) BR were to leave (knock on wood), I’m calling dibs on Zach Parise.
Nice, two “that’s what she said” statements in one post.

Well
that sucks. Now lets watch the Devils start shedding players left and right.

I’ll echo that as a regular Kings opponent.

Well, I’m not Rudy. I’ve always maintained we’d be fine with him or without him.
I am curious to see what the numbers are like, though.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
Sure, but he was a pretty talented sniper that seeemingly was willing to fall into L.A.‘s lap. I’m not sure how that was truly averted, but I’ll take it.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"
http://www.battleofcali.com/
I know he flew out here, but I doubted his willingness to sign all the time. We were pretty clear: we want to sign you and keep all of our supporting players. Kovy (or Grossman) didn’t like our math.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
Whatever it was, thank goodness for that.

Offense would be very useful, but only at the right price. I think we dodged a bullet.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
Yep
I mean it would have been quite nice to pick up him up, but not where it cripples the team for years to come.

Depends quite heavily on what plan B becomes. And what IK did sign for — odd that’s still a mystery. Maybe he made the announcement before even finalizing numbers — it’d be cool if Dean pissed him off enough to do that.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"

Very true
though Im going to be hard pressed to believe that IK didnt sign for some crazy number after all this vacillating. If he signed for some low number after going back and forth, then he is nothing but a prima donna and wanted nothing more than the attention.

So you think
we are going to start seeing interest in the whole Gagne move? I am curious to know what exactly the Devils are going to do, or more specifically who they are going to move to fit Kovi under the cap.

Fuck that. If DL’s “big off-season” acquisition ends up being the addition of another oft-injured Philly Flyer castoff, I will be the first person to charge the AEG offices with pitchforks and torches.

It figures. I know us King fans love our team and think they are so great. And think — what free agent wouldn’t love to catch on with a team on the rise. But I’m pretty sure the rest of the hockey world sees us as a perennial loser (read-Clippers). So free agents use us as leverage to get better deals with winning teams like the Devils and Redwings etc. It’s disappointing that this keeps happening to the Kings, but until we put a legitimate winner on the ice, I suspect it’s a trend that will continue. I’m glad Dean stuck to his guns it this instance, however. Go Kings!

I don’t get it. The Kings = the Clippers but you’re glad that Dean failed to make the franchise shed that reputation?

Only in the sense that he didn’t sell out the future of the team. Kovi was never going to sign here but if DL did something stupid and gave away the whole slam to get him I might have been more upset. But I hear ya. I ain’t happy about this.

Clippers of the NHL…that’s certainly how the East coast might view us. I’ve run across so many bizarre assertions about West coast teams lately (would you believe we’re the weaker conference, despite much evidence to the contrary?). But fortunately I’ve met many more well informed people over in the SB nation group of blogs.

Eh, I don’t know why Kovalchuk would have meant us not facing Doughty next year. I’m more scared of both of them than one of them.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"
http://www.battleofcali.com/
My train of thought is that we still have Doughty and will be able to lock him up for a long time.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
I don’t know how he was supposed to walk — seems he’d be a priority regardless.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"

He’d be a priority, but if Kovy’s salary gutted us, we’d have a very weak supporting cast.

Sure, but there’s always that possibility that you could get there Chicago-style.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"

scary thing is if other teams decide to try that route .. sure it worked, but damn what a price
(not saying it isn’t worth it, but still)

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
A very low possibility, judging by Kovy’s unwillingness to compromise. A high salary for him while others get lowballed? Ugh.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
I don’t know that I was going automatically to “let’s lowball everybody”, but isn’t that Dean’s MO anyways?
Just seems like he’s this summer’s Hossa is all.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"

I think that sentiment is a bit of a holdover from his SJ days. I see it repeated often. But the fact is he was willing to bust open the piggybank for Hossa (offering more money than Chicago) and signed Scuderi for what he knew was an overpayment. So I don’t think he was Scroogey here, just realistic.

Well, you’re catching us just as Zito and Timmy are coming out of their respective slumps (I use “slump” in quotes in Timmy’s case). Zito was an absolute beast on Friday. Bumgarner’s the only wild card, but considering how more his confidence and command have improved in each subsequent start since being called up, I’d tend to rule in his favor.

The Sharks fan in me says I can’t say I’m devastated not to be facing Kovie 5-6 times a year.
However, the hockey fan in me is kind of glad the Kings didn’t overpay for a largely untested product.
Finally, the American in me says good riddance to Kovie – he now is stuck playing in the shithole that is New Jersey for the next gajillion years.

dchesnokov Kovalchuk’s the deal is in excess of $100 million for 17 years. I am hearing out of Russia.
Wow wow wow. If that is true, better hope that cap is never lowered.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
Sounds like that’d be a cap hit under $6M. Not sure cap ceiling will be a problem if that’s true.
"Ridin’ The Meat Train & Dreaming of Jack’s Johnson All Summer Long!"
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Well, there were definitely $6M cap hit players when the cap ceiling was at $40-ish M (I think Scott Niedermayer’s first contract with the Ducks was $6M against a $39M cap). It’d have to drop incredibly for the hit itself to be a problem on its own.
