Sharks (rookies) beat Ducks (rookies)
Behind a relentless brand of physical play, sparked by a two goal effort for Brandon Mashinter and a pair of multi point games from blue chip prospects Nick Petrecki and Benn Ferriero, the Sharks cruised to a 4-1 victory against Pacific Division rival Anaheim in the opening night of the 2010 YoungStars Tournament in Penticton.
Full recap here.
Quick thoughts:
- Hooray for Brandon Mashinter!
- Screw you, Ducks!
-This Petrecki kid seems pretty good. If our defense is supposed to be lousy this season, why don't we let him play some games?
-Benn with two 'N's still seems wrong to me.
-A guy named "Curt Gogol" got in a fight for the Sharks. I really really hope he gets to play in the NHL some day, because I love that name.
-It's so hard to know how to feel about these rookie games. Do they really matter? Are they a good indication of how good the real team will be in the future? Has anybody ever done any research into a possible connection between teams winning rookie exhibition games and how good those teams are for the next 2-3 years? Probably not.
- The Sharks goalie was J.P. Anderson, who apparently kicked ass in the Ontario Hockey League this past season. Damn we have a lot of young goalies with potential. I hope we get to see some of them in the NHL some day.
- The next game happens tonight, and you can watch it:
BACK TO WORK
The Sharks return to the ice for their second game in 24 hours, facing the host Vancouver Canucks at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The game's webcast can be seen live, streamed online at www.sjsharks.com.

Ducks babies play the Flames babies at 4 today, also. Ducks site is streaming.
Do they really matter?
Hey, you’re the guy writing the recap.

At this point I would write a recap of a finger-puppet hockey game.
I miss hockey.

Ducks training camp starts this weekend, though I’ll be out of town until the Monday practice.
So that means slightly less meaningless games should be happening next week.
And aren’t the Sharks off to Europe at some point? Seems they’d get started early with some nonsense games there.

Oh yeah, and if you’re bored enough, you can check out the Pacific Division preview over at View From My Seats. My answers get progressively worse, but I thought I was in a time crunch when I submitted them. :)

Hahahaha, credibility? I’ll show you. Ducks, Kings, Sharks, Yotes, Stars, with some fluctuation possible on that Ducks spot. Kings and Ducks both qualify, but then the universe explodes from the two-SoCal-teams-in-the-same-playoffs paradox
this was funny…i really do think there would be some combustion of some sort.

ha ha … you and Brandon must be smoking some funny shit if you don’t think the Sharks will make the playoffs … :)
He even has the Sharks listed last in the Pacific. Must be on his wish list … ha! :)

Eh, everyone picked Anaheim as a playoff team in last year’s version — besides, if you read my gameday posts (especially back when Pahlsson was around), you should know not to put a ton of stock in my predictions — I certainly am not trying very hard.

You can write about this air-hockey game I played the other day. I hit the puck so hard that it launched off the table and dented the wall. Partially because of my supreme muscular strength but mostly because the puck sucks and always does that.

60 penalty minutes a minute. This is my regular speed.

Whoa.
League comes down pretty hard on Devils for Kovalchuk. Devils lose first-round pick over next 4 yrs plus $3 M in cash plus 3rd round pick.
“It will be the Club’s decision when, within the next four years, it will forfeit its first-round choice.” NHL release says.

I hope that fine counts against the cap…

@FakeDanEllis reports:
“Do you guys realize that the $3 million the Devils are being fined is almost 1.4% of the team’s total value? I think I’m going to faint.”

Jesus fuck. That is hilariously harsh.

It’s a good thing you posted this vs Rudy … otherwise he would only be accused of being a bitter Kings fan still hurting that they didn’t get Kovy .. :)

TSN reports Bobby Ryan is signed…
Will this finally stop the Eklund rumors? Stay tuned!
In Dinglebarn We Trust
Sources tell TSN that the restricted free agent has signed a five-year contract with the Ducks worth $25.5 million.
Holy shit, the Ducks won their battle, it seems. That’s their desired five years and it’s less than the Getzlaf contract I’d been expecting for a year now.
Camp starts Saturday, and it’s looking like everybody but Lupul is invited.

I think hardballing a kid into giving up more of his UFA years was a tough stance, given that he was nice enough to make it clear he wasn’t going to sign offer sheets with anyone else. But he clearly wants to stay in Anaheim, and 5 mil isn’t chump change, so it’s good.
I can just picture Dean and Drew.
“I wanna sign a contract for five years.”
“NO! Make it TWENTY!”
“But—”
