Sharks Gameday: Lacuna

The Sharks have been on a mild roll lately. A three-game winning streak is a very modest accomplishment, but the team has been playing well in just about every area and fans should be happy with where the team is right now. The worries and doubts that started to spring up after the team's cold start can begin to melt away. Better times are here.

So naturally today I want to talk about the most painful moment in Sharks history.

For those of you who are unaware, this season I'm relating each of my gameday posts to one of my 82 favorite films. Today's movie is my 75th-favorite of all time, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In brief:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 American romantic fantasy film about an estranged couple who have each other erased from their memories

Eternal Sunshine features a company that can go into your brain and erase memories. The main character of the film is trying to erase the memory of a woman he was dating, because remembering her is too painful.

So the natural question is...what hockey memory do you have that is so painful that you would erase it?

Star-divide

What's the worst thing that has happened to your team during the time you have been a fan? A playoff loss? An injury? A bad trade? I know it can be painful to discuss these things, but talking is the first step towards healing.

For me personally, the memory I would erase is the Sharks' 2009 playoff loss to the stupid Ducks. It hurt so bad. It still hurts. If I could purge the memory of those terrible games from my mind, I'd be a much happier man.

The following video is from the post-game report of game one of the series, which the Sharks lost. It makes me sick to my stomach to watch it.

That hurt. A lot.

Please share your most painful hockey memories in the comments.

Prediction: Sharks beat the Red Wings, 3-2. Goals from Marleau, Boyle, and Nabokov.

Oh, I don’t know. The easy answer is 2003 SCF G7, but without that, four years later wouldn’t have been as sweet.

Really the answer is losing to the Stars in 2008 — that series sucked all over the place.

Game four right? Sharks get shutout on the road and I have to hang out with Sleek and Spade following/during the game. Worst road trip ever.

To be fair though, you guys were really chill during that period of darkness. And, if I remember correctly, on our way to the game someone we were with threw up on the side of the street. So I guess you can call the game even.

Actually you might want to redirect that anger to Fox. They are trying to charge DirecTV 40% more to watch the same channels they already had. DirecTV would have then had to charge the customers that. So I have to side with DTV on this one.

I was wondering about this… does DTV taking off FoxSports channels mean I can’t get NHL games aired on Fox Sports via NHL:CI? If it does, I’m gonna flip.

Also, for what its worth, you could probably get free NHL:CI or lots of other cool stuff when this happens. Mike Chen is the one who got the word out a couple years ago, when VS and DTV had a contractual spat, about being able to call up and get free NHL:CI. I took advantage of it, and that’s how I got hooked. As I recall, you could also get free HD receivers, DVRs, shit like that.

Hey, my choice would also be a series loss against the Ducks! Solidarity!

It was over so fast that it almost makes it easier, but that 2003 first round against the Ducks… Fuck that shit. In the 15 years I’ve been watching hockey, that’s the biggest upset I’ve ever seen. If you look at any sort of top-10 biggest upsets ever list, that series is usually on there, and my Wings had to be on the losing end of it. That was brutal.

What Tim Thomas did this last year was pretty incredible, but I think Giguere’s performance in that 2003 playoff is the best individual postseason I’ve ever seen. That shit sucked.

So many to choose from...

Worst hockey memories? Here’s a couple…

- 2008 Western Conference Semi Finals Game 6 vs. Dallas. 3rd or 4th OT… Brendan Morrow scoring the goal to eliminate us. It was my last night in NC before driving back to CA and wow… I still remember that the first game the next season, they replayed that moment and it my heart still hurt when I heard that Stars goal horn go off.

- Game 5 of the Canucks series this past season. That icing call that led the Canucks to the tying goal… then the dissapearing puck. Makes me want to puke.

- Ducks beating us in the 1st round in 2009. Seeing Boyle break that stick in half seems like just yesterday.

That’s just recent memory…

For the Sharks it’s a tie. The loss to the Godamn Ducks of course. That was terrible. Also, the loss to Calgary in the WCF. That was a tough pill to swallow.

For the Sabres obviously Brett Hull, ’99 SCF takes the cake. Although losing to the Canes in the ECF was shitty. Sabres were down to #10 on the defense depth chart for game 7.

Say Meg really likes 50/50. He’s going to first have to wait and watch it on DVD to see if he really liked it. Then he’s going to have to watch films with similar tones to see how 50/50 stacks up. Then he’s going to have to reference his chart of genres to see where that particular genre rates among the others. Then, after getting a feel for where the film should be on his list, he’ll have to Flickchart it a couple dozen times to see if there’s any visceral reaction to the film he’s missing. Then, by about next Christmas, Meg will have a fairly accurate feel on where that film lies on his list.

Speaking of 80’s porn, my friends and I watched a new show on Showtime last night called Dave’s Old Porn. Have you seen it yet? It’s a little slice of awesomeness.

Worst Sharks Moments

There are so many to pick from. As mentioned above there was the Ducks loss, the Torres hit, and the Dallas 4OT loss. But don’t forget about the goal Nabokov gave up to Lang with a few seconds left in game 4 of that Detroit series. We would have been up 3-1, but instead they won in OT and then beat us in the series.

I truly and honestly hate people at times. Today is the halloween event where I work. People dress up, bring candy for the kids that will show up. etc etc. So a few in my area brought candy … very few, like me and two others, that’s it. We put it out for the kids – KIDS!! – so who is going by grabbing candy constantly? The stupid adults around here who bought no candy to give out to the kids. God I hate people.

Hands down 2006 second round against the Oilers. Sharks up 2-0 in the series before dropping four in a row. They had home ice advantage locked up the rest of the way and looked ready to finally break through to the Finals. I remember in OT, not sure if it was game three or four, San Jose hit two posts that would have given them a 3-1 strangehold on the series.

That was the year when Pronger really made his name as a Sharks killer, too. Absolutely brutal.

Anaheim is definitely second on my list though.
