Murray= Collosal Idiot

First off I hear that ya'll don't know much about our prospects eh? Well Jake Gardiner was one of our better D prospects not in the NHL. With the emergence of Sbisa and Fowler I understand why Murray would want to trade him but to include him in a deal for a turnover prone and stupid decision making d-man is inexcusable. This is exactly like the Ryan Whitney trade a few years ago except this time Murray can't fix the mistake by acquiring Lubo again. Gardiner was a smooth skating offensive dynamo at Wisconsin and is a plus 23 with 30 points in 30 games. At least Murray should have asked Burkie for a prospect like Nazem Kadri or Keith Aulie. This may be a good move now but don't be bitching when Gardiner is racking points up in Toronto and Francois is cooking at some French ass restaurant. Francois may play better now but this was horrible, horrible asset management by an idiot who is the Ducks GM because Brian Burke knew he could eventually rip him off... Cheers

Do you think we got ripped off in the long-term?
Hell yeah, just another stupid move by Murray, except this time we gave up a top prospect

No, Beach will make an immediate impact and the emergence of Fowler and Sbisa in the Nhl and of Schultz and Vatanen lessened the blow.

Here come the haters who will come to defend a guy who looked good only because Scotty played with him….. sigh

by Albert K on Feb 9, 2011 12:56 PM PST reply actions

I don’t know why our blueline won’t improve because of the Frenchie pickup — and if he played well with Scotty, I think he can play well with Cam.

But your analysis seems half-complete. A Gardiner for Frenchie straight up deal would suck, but we get to ditch Lupul’s money going forward — that makes it much more tolerable to ditch a prospect, in my eyes anyways.

Here’s what I wrote way too late for AC:

EARL:

I’m with Jen here — I don’t truly understand the outrage of Ducks fans, but then again, I don’t track prospects very well (sometimes, not at all). Jake Gardiner might be very good someday, but that day isn’t today, and the Ducks need some blueline capabilities sooner rather than later. Sure, it’s costly, but it’s not like Anaheim doesn’t have a surplus of young talented defensemen — with Fowler and Sbisa both making the jump to the big leagues, it seems we have a lot of future with the young talent already in a Ducks uniform.

As it pertains to Joffrey Lupul, I’m glad to be out from that contract — that to me is the tradeoff for giving up Gardiner. Sure, Joffrey has fought valiantly to get back into the lineup, but especially from his fixture on the 3rd line, he’s grossly overpaid for what he produces. The fact that his contract extends two more seasons without any reduction in pay also factors in here — on his best season, he might live up to that $4.25M, but it’d take a solid combination of linemates and luck to accomplish that.

I don’t care much about 4th or 6th round picks in general, but that applies doubly when Brian Burke is the one doing the drafting. I am not scared of what that pick becomes in the slightest.

And with Beauchemin, we get a known and proven asset who has shown his ability to complement a smooth-skating defensive partner — it seems he’d be a great fit with Cam Fowler, and who knows? Maybe he could cajole his old buddy Scott Niedermayer into playing a few shifts, too (I kid, kind of).

At any rate, I am solidly behind this deal — we’re dealing from an area of excess (promising d-man prospects) and ditching one of our heavier contracts in favor of an improved blueline that we can implement for the remainder of this season. I like Beauchemin, especially if he plays a role off our top pairing — good to have you back, Frenchie.

We’ll see — if Beauch is the new Whitney, I don’t know why he can’t be traded next year. I mean, the actual Whitney was — twice!

Good point but I still giving up Gardiner would hurt. It was just poor asset management in the end. We could have traded Gardiner straight up for a first rounder from another team….. sigh stupid Murray

by Albert K on Feb 9, 2011 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

Possibly, though other than Brian Burke, not many teams part with their first round picks anymore, unless you’re throwing one back the other way.

Who would you have liked to see him get traded straight-up for? I’m not sure I know what level you’re valuing this kid at.

Leave Douglas Murray alone!

Having Ty Conklin on your team is like having a pet monkey. It might be fun for a while, but eventually you're going to severely regret it.

Also: Terry Murray.

Good thing there’s misspellings in the post title, though — that narrows it quickly down to a Ducks Murray. :)

I’m not sure I truly understand that point. For one — we’ve seen both Whitney and Beauchemin play — I don’t know why I should confuse one for the other.

And secondly, I think Beauchemin would be more tradeable than Whitney. Cup ring and all.

Depends on the team. Whitney was fucking lights out this year till his injury. He had like 9 million assists, and was leading the oil in points. he’s not a shitty player, just on our team.

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Feb 9, 2011 7:05 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

The fact that the Ducks system requires you to play defense and the position is called defenseman, he couldn’t cut it in a system that is supposed to be good for D-men.

Maybe not a shitty player, but a shitty defenseman. Same can be said for Wiz whose numbers apparently show that he’s not doing too bad with the Canadiens and Islanders.

by Wooster11 on Feb 11, 2011 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

I dunno.

Beauchemin sucked ass without Scott. The fact that Burke has buyers remorse only 1/2 season after signing Beauchemin makes me even more nervous.

Based on that, I don’t know if i would like this deal WITHOUT Jake in it. With him in there i hate the crap out of it.

by Mike in OC on Feb 9, 2011 4:39 PM PST reply actions

It’s a year-and-a-half since Burkie signed Beauchemin, and I’m not sure it’s buyer’s remorse so much as the Leafs need to concentrate much more on 2013 than 2011.

And Cam can play the Scotty role for Frenchie, no? I wouldn’t rule it out before seeing it, at least.

by Earl Sleek on Feb 9, 2011 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

it’s still TWO first round picks PLUS a conditional pick
for a guy WE COULD HAVE JUST SIGNED to a contract 1 1/2 seasons ago.

by Mike in OC on Feb 10, 2011 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

And Cam can play the Scotty role for Frenchie, no?

And that’s a gamble right? because we have no idea if that will or will not work yet, but we paid like it’s been working for years.

by Mike in OC on Feb 10, 2011 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

We must have some idea, though — I mean, we’ve seen Cam play a bunch this year and we know what Frenchie has done for us in the past. It’s a lot more clear than if we had traded for some other player who never wore a Ducks jersey, I’d think.

Forget the conditional pick — Burkie can’t draft deep — and don’t sweat the fact that Lupul once years ago got selected in the first round. Back then he was all potential — now we know a lot better about why he has trouble earning his salary.

It’s Gardiner plus a salary dump.

And just because Murray didn’t do the right thing a year and a half ago doesn’t mean that he can’t do the right thing now, right? Or are we absolutely forbidden from trading for players who were once UFAs?

I’m sure we’ll get it right by the third time we trade him away. :)

Gardiner is the only thing that makes this deal awful. Being on the losing end of a deal with Burke makes it worse.

We didn’t sign Beauch because he thought he was worth more than he was. So, we over pay in a trade to acquire his overpaid contract. Am I missing something?

by Scottyknow on Feb 10, 2011 12:43 PM PST reply actions

Lupul’s $4.25M/yr non-declining contract — to me, that’s key.

by Earl Sleek on Feb 10, 2011 12:47 PM PST up reply actions

I just fee like this move wasn’t necessary. With our current group, we are definitely not cup favorites. We are a year or two away from being serious contenders. We could’ve signed a UFA shut down d man in the off season and stayed competitive for a few years while our prospects develop.

I was more excited with the Whitney acquisition. With Beauchemin, you pretty much know what you’re going to get and it’s nothing amazing. He’ll provide Cam with a solid partner and eat up a ton of minutes but to expect more than that would be unrealistic. Hopefully he does better with our system than he did with Toronto.

by Scottyknow on Feb 10, 2011 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t know why it has to be Cup-or-nothing. Can’t making the playoffs be a goal worth attaining?

I mean, especially as Ducks fans, we should know that there is potential value in being a #8 seed (2009), a #7 seed (2003), or a #6 seed (2006) — with a hot enough goalie, anything can happen, and Hiller can do that. It’s an extremely tight west — maybe one extra competent blueliner could go a long way. I don’t mind trying it, at least.

And if that logic doesn’t work for you — let’s do it for Teemu. We owe him more than this — let’s send him off best we can.

www.battleofcali.com

by Earl Sleek on Feb 10, 2011 10:33 PM PST up reply actions

We were going to make the playoffs regardless of this move.

If we get the toronto version of beauch, we’re in deep trouble. Fowler needs a solid shut down guy who can provide him with the support to display his skills. I just have a feeling he’ll be covering for Beauch’s mistakes.

There is no guarantee he’s even retiring this season. We can’t be giving up the farm for just one player.

by Scottyknow on Feb 11, 2011 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

If we get the toronto version of beauch, we’re in deep trouble.

Beauchemin’s a -4 this season facing tough competition for serious minutes with questionable goaltending. Fowler’s a -14 this season facing easier competition in fewer minutes with better goaltending.

Right now he needs and even-strength stabilizer, and even the Toronto version of Beauchemin seems to be that.

by Earl Sleek on Feb 11, 2011 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

We can’t be giving up the farm for just one player.

One prospect and a late round pick isn’t the farm. If what I’m reading from other sources is correct, we already have two other defense prospects in Schultz and Vatanen. Unless that late round pick turns into a Datsyuk or Zetterberg, I don’t really care about that. We gave up a prospect that may or may not turn out to be a regular NHLer. We won’t know until he turns pro (which he’s planning to next year) and is in the NHL which could still be 2-4 years down the line.

And also, we’re not paying Beauch’s high salaries for his contract — had we signed him back then, we would have had to. He’s cheaper now than he was that summer, if you’re willing to forget about salary-cap averaged math.

I struggle with the cap dynamics on these deals. I do kind of understand what Earl is explaining, but my emotion can’t get by it. I feel the same as you Scottyknow.

If Jake was not in the deal i’m ok with it.
