The Stoll hit looked worse than I first thought when I saw the replay. There does seem to be some arm-action going on from Stoll.
Maybe a game suspension? Thoughts?

That’s not constructive. Make it five games!

I haven’t seen it, but if’s iffy, there’s likely no suspension coming.

From Nick Kypreos on Twitter:
#Kings Jarret Stoll’s hit on #Sharks Ian White has earned him a supplemental discipline phone hearing with the #NHL this afternoon.
So there’s a phone call, at least.

Stoll's comments
“He was a little low there,” Stoll said of White. “I don’t know what he was doing, if he was reaching for a puck or what. He was right against the boards, too, and he was a little low. I just finished my check on him, and it ended up pretty bad for him. I hope he’s all right. You hate to see a guy get hurt, regular season or playoffs. I definitely wasn’t trying to hurt him.”
Yeah, what the hell was White trying to do along the boards? Was he reaching for the puck? Fuck it….imma hit the guy!
Honestly, this kind of defense makes sense to me, to a point. Like when Douglas Murray hits somebody who was falling or leaning over at the time, sometimes he hits their head. If the person was standing straight it wouldn’t have happened.
The only thing the league can do, though, is to punish hits like this even when there are good reasons why what Stoll did wasn’t malicious or intentionally targeting the head. Through punishing these kinds of hits hopefully players will change their behavior when they see a guy unable to protect themselves.

Agreed, Meg
The Demers hit on Smyth probably deserves a suspension, but considering the outcomes and the vulnerability of the players I don’t see how you can say Stoll’s hit doesn’t deserve more punishment.
I don’t think Stoll was trying to hurt him, but he was definitely being careless. He hit him from behind into the boards. You just can’t do that. Then you add on the fact that he hit his HEAD into the boards. I don’t think he intentionally directed his hit at the head, but he still did it and he needs to take responsibility for that.
White looked concussed when he got up.
I say give him 1 to 2 games.

White was more or less standing still with his back to Stoll (who was not part of the play and took a few strides to get to White) against the boards. It doesn’t matter if he’s leaned over, you don’t hit a guy from behind against the boards.
“Finishing a check” also is not correct. There was no check to begin with. Stoll wasn’t part of the active play. He skated into White, and his elbow came up smacking White’s head into the glass. White didn’t turn, or go low, to avoid the check, because he didn’t see it coming.
I don’t think Stoll intentionally was trying to knock him out or anything, but he skated into the group to check White hard against the boards, a careless and dangerous play given that White’s numbers were clearly visible, and Stoll should know better.

I tend to not really comment on these things when it involves my own team. I find I’m too biased. When it involves other teams, no issue. But my own, I just can’t be objective.

Me too. My basic opinion is that Stoll’s a tough player but not a dirty one. It’s still a careless hit, and if the league is aiming to eliminate those — regardless of intent — then it’s something they have to review in any situation. But it’s a far cry from a Matt Cooke hit (and I respect Stoll a hell of a lot more).
But I’m not going to get in comment wars about it. I tend to stay away from FTF and opponent blog comments during the playoffs because people get too emotional about it. BoC tends to remain on the goofy side no matter what.

I think Stoll thought White was going to turn by the time he got to him but White flubbed it a little and Stoll hit him when he was reaching for it. Stoll didn’t mean to hurt White but he did and will probably get punished for it.
It’s not confirmed, but I’d bet on it.

I’d guess that with the new concussion guidelines that he’s out for a few games. He was wobbly as fuck leaving the ice.
In the replay you can see White go limp and Stoll is actually holding him upright against the boards.
by sixteen.wins on Apr 15, 2011 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, he might have gone out for a bit.
You can also see Stoll kind of look around, like, “Oh shit, did the refs see that?” I think he knew pretty much instantly that he fucked up.
I do give him credit for immediately looking concerned. And not just in and oh-shit-I’m-gonna-get-in-trouble kind of way.

agreed
not predatory, but definitely worthy of punishment.
Braun’s trustworthy enough to fill in, but this really sucks for Ian White. He’s been playing for years and he was stoked on playing his first ever playoff game.

in his hit on Jordan Eberle? It looked kinda predatory, but it definitely wasn’t blind-side, so what is he getting suspended for? Aren’t hits to the head still legal if they aren’t blindside?

I’m not sure why Quick got 3rd star. The first 2 goals he let in sucked. Fuck, Niemi made tougher saves than he did.
The first one was a softy for sure. The second one Couture was in alone, so it’s hard to blame Quick. The OT winner was just a great shot.
Quick was awesome for the rest of the first period though. That’s when the Sharks had most of their pressure and Quick kept the Kings in it.

So I’m going to go ahead and assume White will miss some games for sure. If he wasn’t a hockey player he’d probably be out for months.
Justin Braun will probably replace White. Braun played some solid minutes for the Sharks back in March for a while, so the Sharks won’t have to try to hide him or anything. It will hurt the Sharks to not have White to run the second power-play unit, but Braun has a nice shot as well.

Stoll knew he’d FUBAR’ed on that hit because he looked back for an official just as White was slumping. I’ve never considered him anything other than a gritty player, so there’s no way the hit was intentionally dirty. But he deserves to sit out for sure…

It was hilarious that Terry Murray, unprovoked, brought up how the Sharks were planning on coming out rough and then the refs called a penalty on Ryane Clowe the first time he tried to stir something up.

Because 1 playoff game is equal to about 3-5 regular season games, I guess.

1 PO game is generally equal to 2 reg season games.
I would have liked to see 2 because in my mind that hit deserved 3-4 reg season games.

In the meantime, let’s discuss people who had a good game last night. I’ll go first:
Alexei Ponikarovsky lived up to his contract last night. He had 6 hits, the most of any player besides Dustin Brown, Doug Murray and… Devin Setoguchi?
Devin Setoguchi actually hits a lot. I mentioned that earlier this season, how it was a big surprise for me too.
Ryane Clowe, returning from injury to get three assists and yell at the Kings from the bench!

Jason Demers played like a fucking boss. I’ve never seen him strong-arm and out-muscle the opposition all game like that before. And he did it without going way out of position, which has been an on-going concern with him.

Didn’t catch that when I was at the game, but I’ve seen the clip now and yeah that technically should have been a charging call, even though the actual impact wasn’t too bad.
I applaud his overall physical play; it reached a new level without being reckless. He’s not a particularly big guy and he was really engaging and pushing the Kings around out there.
