This is kinda funny.
I moved to LA back in 2005, and I could only stand it for about 2 years.
I needed to move back to Canada. I definitely feel his pain. Living in LA is so incredibly shallow, and I’m very surprised SoCal has been a bit of a UFA hotspot.

If it happens, think of it as a dump of Smyth’s cap hit, not a “hockey trade” (to use Lombardi’s phrase). From what I understand, the Oilers are below the cap floor right now, so getting a player who will give you a $6 mil cap hit for only $4 mil cash going out might actually be a decent deal, depending on what else the do this summer.
The idea is (I would guess) that the Kings use Smyth’s vacated cap hit to pursue a major UFA, like Richards. So in effect, the Kings would trade Smyth for Richards, which looks like a good deal when you view it that way.
So the Kings wouldn’t do it if they had to take a junk contract like Souray’s in return. The point is to free up cap space, not dump Smyth at any price. They would be content with a fig leaf draft pick or two (assuming that Edmonton isn’t actually stupid enough to trade a useful, young, cheap player in return).
