Pressure's on, Foster! (UFA Day Thread 2)
The Ducks have traded Andy Sutton to Edmonton for defenseman Kurtis Foster.
This is great news, because the last two times the Ducks traded for an Edmonton defenseman, they produced excellent first full seasons:
| GP | G - A - Pts | +/- | |
| Chris Pronger | 66 | 13 - 46 - 59 | +27 |
| Lubomir Visnovsky | 81 | 18 - 50 - 68 | +18 |
Don't break the trend, Foster! :)
Anyways, we needed another UFA day thread -- here it is!
Go insanity.

The Florida Panthers have offered Drew Doughty a 23-year deal with the planet Venus as a signing bonus.
If Doughty accepts the Panthers will still be several million below the salary floor.

I saw a tv show on planets (it wasn’t bad) on Discovery and they kept calling it ur-e-nus. The 12 yr old in me did not like it.

no we learned it was a planet, thus a planet it will remain.

Yeah it’s a good signing, I’m not complaining. It’s just been a slow day for all three California teams, relatively speaking.
I’m refusing to comment in the monster thread – but given the slow day, you wouldn’t know it by how active the site is.

This whole day makes me worry a bit more about how much GMs are relying on another rollback on salaries in the next CBA. It almost seems like they are counting on the NHL to fix their mistakes, and that’s not going to sit well with the players.
We’ll see — even then, it’s a rotten strategy.

So far we have
San Jose — Jim Vandermeer(notes)
duckie — sutton for Foster
LAK — Richards
Let's go Ducks.
Which Richards is she referring to?

The oiler fans have no idea how bad Sutton is. They are actually rejoicing all over the net. Lol whatever, another rip off pulled by the Ducks! The Ducks get fed great d-men for free from the Oilers.
great d-men

Yeah, I’m totally confused. Why would anyone trade for Sutton? And take on salary too? I don’t get it. I almost feel bad for the Oilers. I mean, if I were the NHL, I would probably disallow this trade for being so bad.

Honestly, I don’t care. The Ducks win this trade purely for the salary and cap space they save. Even if Foster doesn’t play, they’re going to be saving money having him in the press box.
By the way, wasn’t Foster once Ducks property?

Just wanted to point out that Foster had the lowest quality of competition and highest offensive zone start of any regular* Edmonton Oiler defenseman this season.
*Over 20 games played
Should be quite the turnaround, then. :)

highest offensive zone start
what does this mean?
It means his coach didn’t trust him at all with defensive zone faceoffs — he played a very sheltered role.
www.battleofcali.com
by Earl Sleek on Jul 1, 2011 4:42 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah. For example, Todd Marchant, Saku and Lydman have the lowest offensive zone start percentage on the Ducks, while Chipchura, Parros and Brookbank have the highest. It’s how you tell who the coach trusts.
Even if it’s a bad gamble for bad gamble trade, glad to have the cheaper bet. Thanks, Oil!

Brad Richards
Kobe Bryant & Jerry Bruckheimer spoke on behalf of the Kings during their presentation.
They should have had someone from the Dodgers speak. I am sure Lasorda could do it.

L.A.’s really trying.
Source: Kings enlisted Wayne Gretzky to help sell Richards on merits of playing in LA.
Of course, by the end of Wayne’s speech, he was talking about the Rangers.
www.battleofcali.com
I don’t care what you guys say, I think it’s cool that the Kings didn’t tip their hand to anything and then showed up with a fleet of people while most other people either did it over the phone or sent a few guys. Way to make everyone else look like shit, boys!
It was all over the place that the Kings were interested and it just seems like desperate to me.
Richards probably feels overwhelmed and will likely end up going to the Eastern Conference.

Watch for Drury or Handzus to be a Duck. It would be cool if Chris could mentor Getzlaf on how to be a real captain. And Chris can also teach the young guys like Holland, Etem, Smith-Pelley, Rakell, Karlsson, etc.

Handzus probably will score a few more clutch goals than Maholtra would have next season. And the savings in team optometry bills by deciding to go with Michal over Manny more than makes up for the additional salary cost.
