Never Stop Voting: Whose Top Six?
This is a good question: whose top six would you rather have?
Bobby Ryan - Ryan Getzlaf - Corey Perry
Jason Blake - Saku Koivu - Teemu Selanne
Patrick Marleau - Joe Thornton - Logan Couture
Ryane Clowe - Joe Pavelski - Martin Havlat
Dustin Penner - Anze Kopitar - Justin Williams
Simon Gagne - Mike Richards - Dustin Brown

we are top heavy…but damn its a good 1st line…
youd hope u could drop ryan to the second…drop i guess blake..(or selanne if he retires) and insert mcmuffin or belesky (or some true left winger in FA that could keep the cycle going you know anti- kyle calder) from the beginning of the season
fuck u sharks and kings for your upgrades…thats some scary shit right there

the 2nd line of the kings is gonna be intresting to watch..how the 2 new guys gel with brown if thats how they indeed pair
looking at the lines though..looks like we need an upgrade to keep up

I think a lot of the answer here depends on Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski. If Pavelski has a bounce-back year and Couture continues his upward trend then the Sharks’ top six can’t be beat. If Pavelski continues to fade or Couture slows down a bit then it’s up for grabs.
Joe Thornton is the best player out of either team’s top six, offensively and defensively. Mike Richards is the best second-line center out of the three teams, though if Pavelski can’t get some consistency going I expect Couture to be dropped down to center the second line.
San Jose Sharks 2011 Off-Season: Shock and Balls
Battle of California
Didn’t Pavelski have a career high in points last year? He’s about to turn 27. I think he’s as good as he’s going to get.
He got more playing time than ever before last year, centering the second line for part of the season, but he didn’t get to hold on to that position after Couture revealed how awesome he was and scrambled the lines.
Pavelski did have more points that Brown while playing in fewer games though, so I guess I won’t get greedy.

Couture = Richards is more like it...
In a lot of ways, they’re pretty dang similar offensively…
Although, I feel Couture is more of a shoot first guy, and Richards is more of a passer, after this year, the way Couture played, I feel that if he continues to improve, he could be a 70-80 point per season guy like Richards can be.

using Kopitar’s +/- against him is like using a great pitcher’s poor record against him. In seasons where the Kings are more than an AHL team he’s a +14. Rick Nash is a -52, Tom Preissing is a +46. absurd!

Lies, damned lies, statistics, etc.
But still, +/- can point at flaws in a forward’s game. Nash’s 52 tells me he’s pretty one-dimensional. +/ for defensemen is a whole ’nother ball of wax.
Kopitar is still entering his prime. He could be as dominant a center as Thornton and Getzlaf have been, but he hasn’t shown it yet.

Since and including the 2006-07 season according to NHL.com (regular season only)
Kopitar v SJ 10 goals 5 assists +9
Kopitar v ANA 12 goals 19 assists +4
Kopitar in BoC 22 goals 24 assists +13; 46 points
Thorton v LA 7 goals 25 assists +/-0
Thorton v ANA 9 goals 26 assists +7
Thorton in BoC 16 goals 51 assists +7; 67 points
Getzlaf v LA 10 goals 17 assists +4
Getzlaf v SJ 6 goals 22 assists +5
Getzlaf in BoC 16 goals, 39 assists +9; 55 points
With the most goals and fewest assists, this tells the old LA woe: Kopitar—a pass-first center—has had worse wingers to pass to.
Also clear: all three are good, but Joe’s been better (but then again he was a veteran playing against the then-much-less-experienced Kopitar and Getzlaf). Today I’d take Kopitar.

I went with LA. That second line is crazy.
I would like to see each trio with the combined salary next to it though.
Here we go
Anaheim
Ryan / Getzlaf / Perry: 5.35 + 5.35 + 5.1 = 15.8M with 243 points
Blake / Koivu / Selanne: 4 + 2.5 + 4.5 = 11M with 115 points
Total: 26.8M, 358 points, 13.358 pts/M
San Joes
Marleau / Thornton / Couture: 7 + 6.9 + 1.24(cheating) = 15.14M with 199 points
Clowe / Pavelski / Havlat: 6.625 + 4 + 5 = 12.625M with 190 points
Total: 27.765M, 389 points, 14.01 pts/M
LAK
Penner / Kopitar / Williams: 4.25 + 6.8 + 3.65 = 14.7M with 175 points
Gagne / Richards / Brown: 3.5 + 5.75 + 3.175 = 12.425M with 166 points
Total: 27.125, 341 points, 12.571 pts/M
Therefore, I would say by my extremely in depth and robust cost/benefit analysis the Sharks have the better bang for their buck
just for fun:
Vancouver
Sedin / Sedin / Burrows: 6.1 + 6.1 + 2 = 14.2M with 246 points
Raymond / Kesler / Samuelsson: 2.55 + 5 + 2.5 = 10.05M with 162 points
Total: 24.25M, 408 points, 16.82 pts/M

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

Top 6? Sharks. Top 3? Ducks. Ryan-Getz-Perry is the best line in hockey, but anything after that is meh, especially if Selanne goes. With Teemu gone, the Ducks really do become a one line team. The Kings have more depth, but Kopitar is the only guy with game breaking talent.
I don’t know why Couture is listed as a winger in the post though, he is a center. One of him or Pavelski would be on the third line.

Couture’s a natural center, but with the addition of Handzus the Sharks have a solid third-line center, so they’re probably going to do their best to make it work with either Couture or Pavelski at wing.

The Sharks, easily
I really think Clowe, Pavelski and Havlat are all going to have career years next year. Clowe and Pavelski have yet to put up the kind of numbers that they’re capable of. Havlat should have a great year playing with some really talented players for once. I think Couture avoids the sophomore slump playing with Jumbo and scores 45 goals. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Marleaus numbers drop a bit though.
The Kings I think have too many wild cards. Gagne and Williams are both really injury prone and who knows how Penner will look next year.
Jason Blake pretty much ruins the Ducks’ top 6.

by RudyKelly on Jul 6, 2011 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions 4 recs
Haha, well 45 goals for Couture is pretty optimistic i guess, but I honestly think everything else is pretty reasonable.
Clowe and Pavelski have gotten better every year, with Clowe showing huge improvements this last year. If neither of them gets a minor injury like they did this year, they should both easily put up career high numbers even if they only stay the same. Pavelski is also getting a nice upgrade in linemates, so i’m excited to see the season he has.
Speaking of getting upgraded linemates, Havlat is gettin a huge upgrade. Havlat scored 22 goals for a total of 62 points in 78 games playing on the 2nd line in Minnesota which consisted of Matt Cullen and Cal Clutterbuck. So yeah…I wouldn’t be stunned to see him break his career high of 77 points.
SO I DON’T THINK I’M BEING VERY UNREASONABLE HERE OK?

Perry’s increased his points total every year, too — so long as we’re ignoring all ceilings in these projections, Logan will never catch him. :)

Last two season: 51 + 66 = 117
Two season prior: 59 + 51 = 110
Two before that: 40 + 59 = 99
It’s not insane to think his ceiling is 85 points or so, but I wouldn’t expect it any particular year. 65-70 points is a lot more realistic.

I spent all day voting for Meg’s story on every computer I could get my hands on, and taking the pulse of the nation on this question of top-six forwards.
Since I don’t give a fuck about what anyone told me, here’s what I say, and if it seems like you’ve heard it before, well, this is an echo chamber.
Sharks are the best. I’d prefer to see Havlat on the top line, but it really doesn’t matter. Might turn out to be the strongest top six in the league.
Kings a fairly close second, and even with a bunch of “what ifs,” they scare the hell out of me.
Ducks have a superb top three with talent inversely proportional to likability. Second line (as assumed) is the biggest drop-off among the teams, but can still provide quality minutes and moderate scoring pop.
In summary, I’m really looking forward to it.
