I made a Google map showing the regions of California as determined by the noted cartographers of the BoC comments.
The green regions, "Coastal California", have a lot more in common with each other than everywhere else. If you live in LA and have to move to Oakland, you're going to find a similar job, similar friends, and be able to do similar things in your free time. If you have to move to Bakersfield or Stockton, something has gone terribly wrong first of all, and you're going to have a very difficult time finding equivalent jobs, friends, and pastimes.
