The Kings look a little off, especially the defense. The problem? With Matt Greene sidelined the Kings skate 4 left shots and 2 right shots. The pairing with 2 left shots is always awkward for the defenseman playing the right side as a left shot. He carries the puck towards the center of the ice, far easier for an opponent to poke check and start an odd-man rush. He has to receive a pass on his backhand, play it off the boards, or stop to receive the puck with his stick behind him leaving the Kings vulnerable to a turnover with the d-man out of position. Matt Greene has been great but he's too injury prone, he's in the twilight of a solid career, he hasn't got much left in the tank.
IMHO, the Kings need a solid, right shot stay-at-home guy, similar to Regehr. They don't need scoring from the right side, Voynov and Doughty are right shots and good offensively, they pair up well with Regehr and Mitchell, stay-at-home left shots. Muzzin is a good offensive defenseman who shoots left, a good pairing for Mr. Greene or any good stay-at-home right shot the Kings can find on the trading block. Martinez is the guy inserted into the lineup to replace Greene but he shoots left and that's the problem. Martinez will be paired with a left shot most of the time and it's awkward out there.
Right shot stay-at-homes aren't that hard to find.
Manchester doesn't have an NHL caliber right shot d-man on the roster AFAIK.
Time for a trade.
I could make an argument for a trade to bring in a left wing that nets rubber but we're all aware of that problem.
