Hockey in Melbourne, Australia

3 time Goodall Cup champions, the Melbourne Ice

Often it gets thrown about that the city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia is the sporting capital of Australia, if not the world. The city that I live in is home to the modern day Coliseum that is the Melbourne Cricket Ground along with an array of other sporting venues, such as the Melbourne Park tennis precinct (the home of the Australian Open).

The league in Australia is known as the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) and features teams known as:

  • Adelaide Adrenaline
  • CBR (Canberra) Brave
  • Newcastle North Stars
  • Perth Thunder
  • Sydney Bears
  • Sydney Ice Dogs

Additionally there are two teams in Melbourne, the younger being the Melbourne Mustangs, the current holders of the Goodall Cup. The team they defeated were also from Melbourne. In the final, at the Medibank Icehouse in Melbourne, they defeated the Melbourne Ice.

Melbourne Ice.

ICE!!!!

We have a team named after what the sport is played on! Surely I am not the only one who thinks this is ridiculous. Never have I come across another sporting league anywhere on the globe which has a team named after the surface on which they play on. This would be the same as seeing any team who plays on grass being named after... well, grass... and that's ludicrous.

Ice ice baby.

Enjoy the Superbowl between the Seattle Grass and the New England Grass.
