The shootout epidemic! Not so much...

Things are rosy past regulation in the NHL compared to a decade ago when ties were far too regular an event, but don't let that get in the way of complaining about the shootout happening too often (it's not.)

About the stinking 3-point games

I'm tired of making the argument. I'm just resigned to frustratingly waiting for the day when the NHL changes the standings points to a version that better reflects on-ice performance. (Eliminate the shootout entirely? Only in my dream.) But PuckDaddy, playing off the NYT's SlapShot's examination of the Rangers' record, succinctly illustrates, once again, the issues with the NHL's loser point and breakaway contests. Seeing four columns in a team record is awkward, but so is pretending teams are ".500," so is making OT games worth 50% more than regulation games, so is the very meaning of "losing" streak now, and so is pretending that franchise records for OT goals mean anything in the 4-on-4 loser point era. (Well, I mean they do, but now the context is waaay skewed, which is a bummer.) Keep the gimmicks if we must because "The People Demand a Winner." Just get rid of the gimmicks' exaggerated value.
