Be honest: who thought it was going to be that easy?
I'm not going to lie, I kinda thought it would be. I've been doing this little dance for about 15, 16 years now, and I still fall into that trap when the Kings are playing well where I think they're never going to lose again. I mean, how could they? Can you see how well they skate, how good Quick looks, how masterfully Terry Murray pulls the strings? And then they play two playoff teams and they look... well, mortal. Sure, there were moments of greatness, shifts where the Kings cycled and wore down the opposition, but mostly they looked like, well, a bubble team.
Of course, the refereeing didn't help, but that's going to happen as the season goes on. After the weirdness in the Rangers game the Kings fell to the Red Wings machine, where moving picks and dives usually sway the refs to their advantage. (And the whining, oh God the whining!) A missed bounce here, a bad play there and boom, the Kings are 4-3. Now the Kings play a solid Columbus team whose lone loss has been to the San Jose Sharks. The Blue Jackets have two good scoring lines, a great shutdown line and a solid goaltender. They are, however, missing their best defenseman in Jan Hejda, so the Kings are catching them at the perfect time. Still, this game will be hard.
*Sigh I wish it were easy.
In other news, wooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! Holy shit was that Dodger game awesome! Fuck yeah! Andre Ethier has tremendous juevos to take those pitches for balls and walk in the winning run. Any asshole can go up there and swing for the fences to try to attain glory; it takes true confidence to stick to your game plan, even in that situation, and not swing for anything less than the perfect pitch.
My dad always tells the story of how he was in the car in 1988 when Kirk Gibson hit his home run so he heard, "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!" from Vin Scully. I have a different story for this one: my boss is a cruel governess so I couldn't listen to the game at work, so instead I had to watch the game on MLB GameChannel. Not quite the same, but you better believe I didn't pump my fist when I saw, "Runs Scored" come up on my screen.
Also, woooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's another big game coming up with important implications for Earl and I: USC vs. Notre Dame. Obviously I'm on the USC side because I'm a preppy fuck and Earl's on the Notre Dame side because he's going to Hell. USC will probably win because they're USC and if they wouldn't mind punching Jimmy Clausen a few times in the face I won't complain.
Prediction: Kings win, 3-1. Goals by Frolov, Stoll and Richardson.
