Former San Jose Shark Signs with Anaheim Ducks

New, 48 comments

Everyone is really excited about this signing, so I thought I'd look in to it a little further.

Here's this Selanne guy while he was playing with the Sharks.

Last week, everyone seemed pretty excited over some signing that the Anaheim Ducks had made, but I wasn't too familiar with what was going on. I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

The player, a veteran forward named Teemu Selanne, seems like he's had quite the history in the NHL. Apparently all the fuss about Anaheim signing Selanne is because he used to be on the San Jose Sharks, and any time a team steals a star player from a division rival, it's going to cause waves. At the very least, it certainly makes sense why the folks here at Battle of California would be so excited about this move. Sorry about acquiring your guy, Sharks fans! You should have locked him up before free agency. I hope he wasn't much of a fan favorite or anything.

I pulled up a couple of his random seasons just to get a sampling of what the Ducks might be in for with this guy, and it looks pretty impressive...

Looks like he's a pretty consistent (almost) 30 goal scorer; perhaps we have found our man to replace Bobby Ryan on Right Wing on the Corey Perry/Ryan Getzlaf line?

The contract is only a one year deal, but it's also for a very affordable $2 million. To put this in perspective, Selanne's last contract with San Jose was for $6.5 million! Looking at how little he was willing to sign for this season, it's clear that San Jose really messed up by letting him walk.

Anyway, you Sharks fans here on Battle of California will certainly have some good perspective for us. Please share in the comments what Anaheim Ducks fans can expect from this guy, and how you feel about losing him to a division rival.
