Ducks Gameday: Battle of California Comments of the Week

New, 26 comments

"El Burrito de la Victoria" returns as we celebrate the highest rated comments of NHL's week 1. Ducks @ Sabres.

The Buffalo Sabres are a horrible hockey team and they're very boring to write about, so I won't.

Instead, let's focus on something more exciting: All of the fine folks who visit, read, and write comments on the wonderful posts that us bloggers slave away on! A few seasons back, Battle of California reader ievans had the brilliant idea to point out and congratulate the comments that have the most reader "recommendations" of the week. This evolved into awarding this comment a burrito trophy, because this is BoC, after all. Because ievans has a life, this inevitably stopped at various points in the season as he was doing more important things. Other commenters, such as meetyourmako and bezzerkker have tried to keep it going, but it fell to the same fate.

But me? An actual Battle of California blogger? Well my life is meaningless and I have nothing better to do, so I can keep up this bullshit all season long! I get to steal a reader's idea and make it seem like I'm doing him a favor by taking it off his hands.

So here now is the best BoC comment of the first (half) week of NHL, some honorable mentions, and the worst comment of the week. All recommendation counts are as of late Sunday evening.

Comment of the Week, 10/8/2014 - 10/11/2014

The Best

In response to a Red Wings fan insisting that time zones and late games were the driving force behind Detroit being realigned to the Eastern Conference:

Maybe you should ask your mom for a later bed time.

Honorable Mentions

Here are some of the other higher rated comments that didn't beat the best, but our readers enjoyed quite a bit, nonetheless:

In response to the flood of Red Wings fans who, unfamiliar with Battle of California, signed up for new accounts to bash my thought-provoking piece on Detroit's realignment:

These responses all make me glad that BoC doesn’t have a waiting period before letting new people post.

And this next one is from me, but I promise this is not my own bias here, I'm going off recommendations alone. Again, in response to the Detroit time zone argument, I brought up this completely legitimate Ken Holland quote...

This is good revisionist history. Time zones were mentioned as an aside during realignment talk, and I even mentioned them in my post above, but the main focus was on travel. Like when Holland said this:

Going forward I'll generally showcase more than 2 runners-up, but the next two highest-rec'd comments were also me, and I don't want to seem too braggy. I'm really fucking funny, you guys. For what's worth, the Detroit thread was a comedic goldmine of comments, and you should read them all.

The Worst Comment of the Week

Unlike the others, this one is much more subjective and I will arbitrarily pick what I feel was the worst comment of the week. If you disagree with me, please post a lengthy comment ridiculing me below and I'll be sure to pick that next week as the worst comment.

Here's a wayward visitor demanding decorum and understanding between fanbases (on Battle of California?!):

ha, blanket assumptions about the fanbase of a team I don’t like. humor!

Perhaps you are lost, John?

Bonus: Best Comment of the Offseason

We had an eventful offseason on Battle of California, but maybe you actually have a life that doesn't revolve around us (some how), and you were, oh I don't know, outside or something while the NHL was sleeping. Well then, you probably missed this comment....

In response to someone trying to point out an error about Koivu's country of origin, in a post that is otherwise full of accurate information...

Source? Because the article I’m reading says something waaaaaay different.

Honorable Offseason Mention:

In response to Dunn, Stace, and me hanging out together...

You fools. Earl, Rudy, and I were never all in the same place at the same time, in case of terrorism.

I hope you enjoyed our dumb-dumb jokes.

If you didn't get a burrito this week, be funnier.

Gameday

Prediction

Ducks have eaten too many burritos on this trip, fall to the horrible Sabres 2-0.
