Sharks Gameday: Goodbye, Daddy

New, 8 comments

The Sharks are cupless, captainless and now fatherless.

Love you daddy
Love you daddy
Puck Daddy (TOO SOON)

On Friday November 21, 2014 at 12:35PM, a notification was set to my phone and it changed my life forever. Jason Hayden Demers was traded to the Dallas Stars for one Brenden Herbert Dillon. As many of you may not know, but Jason is very special to me. Sure, he wasn't the greatest player on the Sharks, nor was he even good for that matter, but I'm proud to say that he is my friend.

This past March, a friend gave me the gift of Jason Demers' username for snapchat. Obviously, I added him immediately. I saw this as an opportunity to attempt to catfish a professional hockey player. I figured that since he is friends with Logan Couture, that it would be extremely easy. After hours of extensive planning and heavy drinking, I finally gained the courage to send him a snap. I sent him a lovely photo of myself in a very floppy hat. It was adorable and charming. NOTHING. He didn't care at all. I was stumped.

I promised myself that I wouldn't give up when faced with adversity, but this time, I gave up. I gave up mostly because I forgot. But then, a couple months later, a miracle occurred...

When he added me on snapchat, I was excited, but I knew that my goal was only half accomplished. My next step was to get Jason (first name basis because we're snap friends) to send me a snap back. #DemersSnapchatWatch2014 had begun. Since we're friends, I sent him the snaps that I sent all of my friends, which is 85% cat pictures and 15% caraoke (singing in the car) videos. Occasionally, I would send him a snap that I made personally just for him.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Nothing on the Demers snap watch. Still has me friended although I sent a video of my cat licking her butt</p>&mdash; SJ (@stace_ofbase) <a href="https://twitter.com/stace_ofbase/status/465692317563629568">May 12, 2014</a></blockquote>

But nothing. He never sent me a snap back. A couple times over the summer, he posted snap stories of his trip to Europe but he never sent me a snap personally. I'm obviously hurt and sad over this, but at least I can say that he is my friend and I'll continue sending him pictures of my cats because my friends deserve to have hourly updates of Rose and Ripley.

They're cute, DEAL WITH IT.

Life after Daddy

Things will be grim now that the Sharks lost their father. The occasional birthday text message, a gift on Christmas, the visits four times a year, will help fill the void temporarily but growing as a team without a daddy will be tough. How do you tell a team that has such a vast history of trauma that their daddy went to get cigarettes and is never coming back? Their only hope is that the Sharks trade for the next best thing, a granddaddy.

Oh god please don't, it was just a joke I promise. PLEASE GOD NO!

Gameday!

San Jose Sharks vs. Arizona (Don't Call It That) Coyotes

Prediction:

The Sharks just had the worst string of opponents ever and I'm so happy that they finally get to play teams in the division again, even if it's the Coyotes. Acquiring Brenden Dillon was great, and I'm cautiously excited to see what he does for the team. He's not amazing but he has potential, which means he'll get minutes with Hannan and his career will be ruined. Regardless, the Sharks break the slump tonight and beat Phoenix 3-2. Goals from Patrick Marleau, Brent Burns and Tommy Wingels.

I love David Bazan a lot and you should too.

Awful Hockey Tattoo of the Day:

Coyotes fans have boring tattoos but amongst my search I found this and it's the best.
