Welp, it looks like this is actually happening.
Last week, Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson launched a Kickstarter to create new episodes of the show and pitch to new networks to get a more permanent run going.
While this sounded like great news, I was disappointed to learn he was asking for $2 million just to make three episodes, that neither he nor Mike would be the host of the new episodes, and that none of the old crew was coming back, even to voice the bots.
Regardless, they met their $2 million goal, and they announced Jonah Ray (of Nerdist fame) as they new host. It's not ideal to swap out hosts again, but Jonah Ray is a funny dude, at least.
Anyway, I'm as much of an MST3k fan as anyone, but is a reboot necessary? The hole that was left by MST3k's demise has arguably been filled by Rifftrax, which already features Mike and the non-Joel stars we loved on the former show. And while this was once a controversial opinion, I think history has proven that Mike was the better host anyway. Joel was great too, but even during his best years, he had Mike in the room as head writer.
I'll watch the new episodes out of curiosity, but mostly I'll probably just go back to old episodes or new Rifftrax for my quota of dudes making fun of movies.
