Ducks Gameday: Chicago 7 Quotes

New, 5 comments

Avoid all needle drugs, the only dope worth shooting is Patrick Kane. Ducks @ Blackhawks.

Discussing the Blackhawks is too sad or depressing these days, on account of how embarrassing the NHL is and how poorly it responds to important issues.

So instead, let's take a look at something that's actually entertaining to have come out of Chicago - The Chicago 7 (initially the Chicago 8) Trial of the 1960s. For those unfamiliar, here's a quick recap from Wikipedia:

Seven defendants -- €”Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, and Lee Weiner†-- charged by the federal government with conspiracy, inciting to riot, and other charges related to anti-Vietnam War and countercultural protests that took place in Chicago, Illinois, on the occasion of the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

Here are some quotes from the trial, which Hoffman and friends made into a god damn circus...

The mayor makes a Freudian slip...

"The police aren't in the streets to create disorder; they are in the streets to preserve disorder." -- Mayor Richard Daley

ABBIE HOFFMAN:    Are you asking if I had those thoughts or if I wrote that I had those thoughts?  There's a difference.

RICHARD G. SCHULTZ, THE ASSISTANT U.S. ATTORNEY:  It's a convenient difference, isn't it Mr. Hoffman?

ABBIE HOFFMAN:    I don't know what you mean.  I've never been on trial for my thoughts before.

"Conspiracy? Hell, we couldn't agree on lunch." -- Abbie Hoffman

"Would you like your children to grow up like them?"  --  A Chicago Seven Trial juror

"Our strategy was to give [the judge] a heart attack.  We gave the court system a heart attack, which is even better." --  Jerry Rubin

ATTY. WEINGLASS: Could you indicate to the Court and jury whether or not the Pentagon was, in fact, exercised of its evil spirits?

HOFFMAN: Yes, I believe it was. . . .

ATTY. WEINGLASS: Between the date of your birth, November 30, 1936, and May 1, 1960, what if anything occurred in your life?

HOFFMAN: Nothing.  I believe it is called an American education.

Regarding the pet pig they tried to run as a presidential candidate...

HOFFMAN: He didn't [win] actually---which one did?
