The NHL announced recently that the St. Louis Blues will host the 2017 NHL Winter Classic which means that everyone will get to see the Chicago Blackhawks play another outdoor game. Unfounded, I know. But even though we must endure another Blackhawks outdoor loss (0-2-0 record in Winter Classics), we'll also get to see St. Louis try to pretend that great players enjoyed their time not winning anything in their now football-less city.
Here's a preliminary starting roster for the inevitable shit show that will be this alumni game:
Forward Lines:
1st: Martin Havlat – Terry Yake – Dainius Zubrus (esteemed alumni line)
2nd: Scott Gomez – T.J. Oshie – Troy Brouwer (best former players line)
3rd: Jaden Schwartz – David Backes – Reed Low (unable to re-sign / some old dude line)
4th: Steve Ott – Wayne Gretzky – Brett Hull (Steve Ott line with former 4th line contributors)
Defense:
1st pair: Bruce Affleck – Carl Gunnarsson (best pair)
2nd pair: Alex Pietrangelo – Kevin Shatenkirk (newly retired after another postseason of failure pair)
3rd pair: Dennis Wideman – Roman Polak (gritty bottom pair alumni)
In Goal:
Martin Brodeur (if he's still alive and OK with embarrassing himself in public again)
Gameday
Anaheim Ducks at St. Louis Blues
Friday, March 11, 2016, 5:00 p.m. PST
Graveyard of the NHL – Landfill, MO
Prediction
The 2017 Winter Classic alumni game will feature St. Louis Blues alumni Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Think about it.
